Santa Monica, CA – WBO welterweight champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams will appear this Saturday on the August edition for “TKO powered by SMV” to discuss his future plans. “We met Paul this week at a press luncheon and chatted about his thoughts about the state of the welterweight division and what his options are. The ‘Punisher’ is a great guy, very down to earth and as he gets more exposure in the boxing world, his fan base will grow. He was frank about the rematch talk with Antonio Margarito and other possibilities,” revealed Dennis Bernstein, TKO’s Executive Producer and host.
Former welterweight champion Sugar Shane Mosley will give his thoughts on his upcoming bout with Nicaraguan bad boy Ricardo Mayorga on September 27 at Home Depot Center. The HBO televised fight will mark Mosley’s return to Los Angeles for the first time in eight years. “It was a great press conference yesterday because you saw the juxtaposition between these two personalities. They’re polar opposites, Shane always the gentleman appearing with his father and son, while Ricardo’s smoking cigarettes and posing down. I can’t see this one going the distance and the fight should be highly entertaining,” Bernstein related.
Veteran fight writer Dave Meltzer will also appear to discuss the state of the MMA business and how the landscape may change over the next 12 months. “I’ve been a fan of Dave’s work with the Wrestling Observer and now that he’s jumped on board with Yahoo! he’s an MMA insider. He lets the chips fall where they may,” Bernstein stated from his Santa Monica office. TKO will air immediately following AM 830’s coverage of the Angels-Yankees afternoon game at approximately 5PM. “You can’t have a better lead in than Angels-Yankees. We’ll get a lot of those listeners and turn them into TKO fans,” SMV’s chairman conveyed. For those not in the greater Los Angeles area that would like to listen, TKO will be streamed live on the station’s website, www.am830klaa.com.
Mosley vs. Mayorga: What’s all The Fuss?
I’m having a very difficult time getting all worked up about the upcoming Shane Mosley – Ricardo Mayorga bout. What’s all the fuss about ? Does anyone really think that Mayorga is going to step up in this one ? Talk about smoke and mirrors. Mayorga may be one of the most over hyped fighters of the last twenty years. The promoter must love this guy because he keeps popping up. OK he beat a washed up and less then ” Ferocious ” Fernando Vargas. I just can not see him defeating a top guy like Mosley. To me Shane will one day be in the Hall Of Fame. Hell he won me over when he was a lightweight. He is one of the most under rated lightweights of the last thirty years. I consider Roberto Duran the best lightweight I’ve ever seen but there are two guys that would have given him a lot of trouble. Pernell Whitaker and Mosley.
Back to Mayorga…Yes I remember he knocked out Vernon Forrest who I have a lot of respect for years ago. I did feel that Vernon should have got the nod in the rematch. Since then Mayorga has been trashed every time he he moved into the Major Leagues. Tito tamed him and De La Hoya destroyed him. Mosley will manhandle him. Mayoga’s mouth may help sell tickets and that is well and good by a promoter’s point of view As fans though we should not be fooled.
