David Haye – “If Rahman-Toney Is Changed To A No-Decision, Rahman Is Back In The Mix For November”

By James Slater: Former cruiserweight champion David Haye today confirmed his first full-time fight up at heavyweight will take place in the month of November. Speaking to Steve Bunce on Setanta Sports, Haye confirmed the date but said there were still a number of fighters being considered for his opponent..

“The fight is in November,” Haye said. “All it is about is getting the opponent. The middle of November is the time we’re really looking at. It’s pretty much 95-percent certain on that. Opponent-wise people keep jumping up and going down. Some are asking for ridiculous money.”

Indeed, a good number of heavyweights have shown interest in facing “The Hayemaker.” Monte Barrett, for one, is absolutely desperate for the chance. Yet Haye dismissed the chances of “Two Gunz” landing the date – unless the veteran can get another impressive win under his belt in the meantime.

“The heavyweight division is very fragile,” Haye went on. “There was talk of Hasim Rahman, bur he got beat by James Toney. Is that fight going to get changed to a No-decision? If it does, that leaves him back in the mix. The heavyweight division is so wide open. You could focus everything on, say, James Toney, and he might take another fight. Who cares if I fight Monte Barrett? Who has he ever fought? If he has another win maybe, and looks good, he could be in the mix, but at the moment he’s just a 38-year-old journeyman who had a good win over a seven-foot basketball player the other night (meaning Tye Fields). Big deal!”

It does seem strange Haye is still even talking about Rahman. Why should the fight with Toney be demoted to a No-decision? To most, Toney won fair and square and made Rahman quit. It seems clear Toney is the far better candidate to take on Haye. I’m pretty sure “Lights Out” would rise to the challenge, should the terms be right. A Haye-Toney clash would be a sure seller, also. And that fight would be a most credible one for the former cruiser. Just imagine the statement Haye would make if he were to become the only man to KO the multi-weight all-time great!?

Finishing off talking by expressing how he cannot wait to make his move as a heavyweight, Haye again said he is the saviour of the division.

“I can’t wait to get in there,” Haye declared. “There’s nobody in the heavyweight division who can bring what I bring. It’s wide open. It’s me or no one.”
