by James Slater: It’s likely, almost certain, that fight fans are getting a little bored with what has constantly been coming out of David Haye’s mouth just lately. Indeed, this is around the third or fourth article that has appeared on Haye in the recent weeks. Still, if the guy keeps making the news it has to be reported – hence this further article on “The Hayemaker..”
What’s the former cruiserweight champ up to now? Well, according to an article that appeared in yesterday’s Sunday Mirror newspaper, Haye is planning to attend Wladimir Klitschko’s world title defence against Tony Thompson this coming Saturday in Germany. Not only that, but the 27-year-old soon-to-be-a-full-time-heavyweight says he intends to confront the IBF and WBO champion right after the fight. It seems Haye is almost obsessed with landing a fight with Klitschko, and right now he cannot stop talking about him.
“I’ve looked Wladimir in the eye and I’m not so sure he fancies getting in the ring with me,” Haye told The Sunday Mirror. “He is talking about meeting me at The O2 Arena in London but I’m not sure that is what he really wants – and that is why I’m going to Hamburg to confront him. The heavyweight division is about to vanish off the face of the earth and I’m going to tell Wladimir that he can help me save it. It’s a total joke – nobody has taken the heavyweight division seriously since Lennox Lewis retired.”
It’s not known if Klitschko is aware the man who is so desperate to fight him will be showing up to confront him on Saturday. But Wladimir has more serious issues on his mind anyway – such as dealing with the man in front of him in Tony Thompson. It seems the notion of “The Tiger” beating Klitschko has not even entered Haye’s mind. Providing the defending champion does get past Thompson, however, it must not be forgotten that Haye has done absolutely nothing to have earned a shot at Klitschko. Not yet anyway.
Instead of going out of his way to heckle Wladimir, shouldn’t David really be busy getting ready for his heavyweight re-debut in October? Speaking of which, isn’t it about time team Haye announced who “The Hayemaker” will be fighting?
I’m beginning to get the feeling, with regards to a Klitschko-Haye showdown, that Haye should be careful what he asks for – as he just might get it. Wouldn’t Haye look awfully foolish, after all his talk, if he were to be blown away by Klitschko in ultra-quick time?
