Quick Q and A With Julio Gonzalez – “Let’s Do It Again!”

30.09.07 – by James Slater: This writer had the good fortune to have been seated ringside last night at the Clinton Woods-Julio Gonzalez rematch thriller. I’m not going to write a fight report – that job has already been done well on ESB by Barry Green – needless to say, the fight was a great one. Possibly even a candidate for best fight of the year held in a British boxing ring, both men gave it absolutely everything they had in a brutal and admirable contest..

gonzalezIn this article, however, I give an insight into what Gonzalez will likely do in the future, his feelings about last night’s official scoring and his respect for Clinton Woods as a fighter. As he was leaving the ring, Julio gave a short interview to local radio and I recorded what the 31 year-old Mexican warrior had to say post-fight.

Q. What are your immediate feelings about the fight, Julio?

Gonzalez: It was a good fight. I tried to wear him down but he won the fight. It was a good battle, I hope the fans got their money’s worth and enjoyed it.

Q. How would you compare Woods with the last time you met?

Gonzalez: He was good, you know. He was well prepared. I felt good in there too, it’s just a shame the judges didn’t give me too many rounds. One judge had it 177-111, which is ridiculous, but hey.

Q. How did you see the score of the fight?

Gonzalez: I saw it much closer. Every fighter feels he won, though. I’ve got to see the tape, but I thought it was definitely way, way closer than how the judges had it.

Q. How did the cut over the right eye affect you?

Gonzalez: It never bothered me. My corner people did a good job, so it never bothered me.

Q. What next for you, Julio?

Gonzalez: Oh, I’m going to sit back, relax and enjoy this time. Then I’ll go back and talk with my family, my manager and I’m gonna come back. I’m still a warrior, I showed it tonight in a cracking fight and I’ll come back and we’ll see what happens.

Q. Would you like a third fight with Clinton?

Gonzalez: Hey, why not? The people would want to see it again, I want to do it again. But not over here again. I’d like a third fight to be back in the States because over here I can’t really get a fair judgement.

Q. Well, congratulations on being a great credit to your country.

Gonzalez: Thank you. I wanted to show the people that Mexican people have good heart. Viva Mexico!
