Chris Edwards Hoping to Join Stablemates

27.10.06 – Hanley boxer Chris Edwards will top the bill at the Kings Hall on November 24th when he faces Huddersfield’s former Commonwealth champion Dale Robinson. An application has been made to the British Boxing Board of Control for the ten round bout which has been made at the 8st flyweight limit to be made an English title clash. The Board will discuss the application at its next meeting on 8th November.. Should the application be successful Edwards will become the third boxer from the Burslem camp of Impact Boxing to challenge for English honours since June; Scott Lawton lifted the English lightweight title in June and Gary Reid contests the English light-welterweight title in Glasgow on 4th November.

Edwards has often had to fight against opponents from heavier weight divisions due to the scarcity of British flyweights and with 9 wins 12 losses and 2 draws his record reflects this. Robinson, on paper, looks by far the more accomplished boxer, with 19 wins 2 losses and 1 draw and will enter the ring as the clear favourite. Robinson’s two defeats both came in top-level clashes: the first, a twelve round points loss to Jason Booth in an IBO title bout and in the most recent, a British title contest, he took Martin Power the distance.

Impact’s head coach, Lindon Newbon, believes that Edwards can secure his highest honour to date:

“We never arrange opponents for any of our lads unless we believe they have a good chance of beating them. Chris is supremely fit and will have no trouble going the distance; he won’t have any trouble making the weight either. He really impressed in his last fight against Usman Ahmed and put in a tremendous work-rate, if he does the same against Robinson he will cause him lots of problems.”

“Chris is already looking sharp in the gym and there are still four weeks until the fight; by then he will be in peak condition. He won’t need the motivation either; he trains with Scott Lawton and Gary Reid and is feeding off their determination and enthusiasm, its very contagious. Chris will also have a fantastic support from the Kings Hall crowd so Dale Robinson will need to be on top form if he’s going to stop Chris getting his hands on that belt.”
