24.08.05 – By Tony Nobbs: IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan battered Jair Jiminez until referee Johnny Wright rescued the game but out gunned challenger at 2 minutes 23 seconds of round five at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in NSW, Australia tonight. Team Fenech’s ‘Raging Bull’ took the opening stanza 10-9 before taking complete charge in the second hurting Jiminez with a straight southpaw left hand to the stomach and then out muscling the Columbian.
In round four Jiminez was given a count in the opening seconds and for the rest of the round was on the receiving end of some vicious shots, a noticeable hook downstairs almost doubling him over. In round five Darchinyan upped the pressure and Jiminez was in great trouble when the fight was stopped.
While never really in the contest Jiminez did try and throw when he was able to get in range and did land on occasion. In all another good showing by Darchinyan, based in Sydney since the 2000 Olympics where he represented Armenia.
In the main support, the promising Billy ‘The Kid’ Dib stopped Uganda’s Michael Kizza in round two. Kizza was down in round one and struggled to hear the bell. Dib kept in charge in round two and a right hand around Kizza’s guard found the mark dropping the import. Ref Craig Waller waved it immediately. Time: 2.19. With the win Dib, a Prince Naseem style fighter, picked up the vacant IBO Asia Pacific jnr lightweight belt.
Billy Hussein trained Ahmed Elomar captured the vacant IBO Asia Pacific featherweight title with a second round TKO of Thailand’s Denchai Sor Tiebkoon. Body shots dropped the lanky Tiebkoon and the referee stopped the fight with the Thai in strife on the ropes.
In a scheduled six at heavyweight, Lawrence “My dietician’s on holidays” Tuasa scored a first round knockout of Fijian Fatu Tuimanono, with a well timed right hand. A right hand ended it. Nice guy Lawrence possesses just about every punch in the book and could well be a genuine world – class commodity if he got back down to cruiserweight or even light heavyweight. For this fight the 5 ft 8 Tuasa weighed close enough to 103 kg.
Adam Lovelock outpointed Jarrod Tredor in an entertaining cruiserweight four rounder to open the night. All three judges saw it 40-36.
