Winky Wright Headed To Canastota For Hall Of Fame Weekend

03.06.04 – The International Boxing Hall of Fame announced today junior middleweight champion of the world Ronald “Winky “Wright will attend festivities planned for the 15th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 10-13th. While in Canastota, Wright will conduct two public workout sessions for the fans.

Fighting out of St. Petersburg, FL, Wright reigned as WBO junior middleweight world champion from 1996 to 1998. He captured the IBF title in October 2001 and unified the junior middleweight titles on March 13, 2004 with a unanimous 12-round decision win over WBC and WBA champion Sugar Shane Mosley. Wright’s pro record now stands at 47-3 (25KOs).

“I’m really happy to be coming to the Hall of Fame for the first time and being amongst the boxing greats that I grew up watching,” said Wright. “I’m also looking forward to putting on public workout sessions for the fans.”

Wright will hold public workout sessions on the Hall of Fame grounds at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 11th and at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 12th. The sessions will include heavy bag, speed bag, jump rope and ring work.

The June 10-13th Hall of Fame Induction Weekend will feature over 20 exciting events. New inductees to be honored are super featherweight champion Azumah Nelson, welterweight champion Carlos Palomino, light heavyweight champion Dwight Muhammad Qawi, super bantamweight champion Daniel Zaragoza, referee Stanley Christodoulou, promoter J Russell Peltz, and journalist W.C. Heinz. Posthumous inductees will also be honored.

“The Hall of Fame is thrilled to welcome Winky Wright to Canastota,” said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “He’s one of boxing’s top stars and fans will really enjoy seeing him in ‘Boxing’s Hometown.'”

Over 50 boxing legends of yesterday and today are anticipated to participate in Hall of Fame Weekend festivities. Among those joining Wright include Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Jake LaMotta, Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, Angelo Dundee, Alexis Arguello, Jose Torres, Danny “Little Red” Lopez and Canastota’s Carmen Basilio.
