Mario Veit earned hard fought decision over Karanevic

06.03.04 – German super middleweight contender Mario Veit won a hard earned 10-round decision in a competitive and action packed fight against tough Russian contender Sergey Karanevic on Tuesday at the Universum-Gym. Promoter was Spotlight Boxing. On the occasion of the 20 year aniversary of Universum Box-Promotion the Hamburg based company invited fans and business partners to a boxing event in their own locations. Tickets, foods and drinks were free. Eight fights were on the card, two of them woman boxing contests. The last three fights were broadcasted live on Eurosport.

Top rated European contender Mario Veit dominated his Russian opponent early on with a reachy jab and precise combinations. But Karanevic was struggling through and was firing back in round four and five, backing Veit up with hooks to the head and right hands.

Fighting on the backmove the German regained control and appeared to be on the verge to end matters in round eight when he deeply rocked the Russian with a barrage of punches to the head. But Karanevic, bleeding heavily from the nose, weathered the storm and had a strong final round where he was desperately trying to score a knockout.

After ten rounds the three judges at ringside scored the entertaining contest 98:92, 97:93 and 96:94 in favor of Mario Veit who improved to 42-1 with 22 knockouts. Karanevic dropped to 18-10 with 8 knockouts.

It was Mario Veit’s 12th consecutive victory after his unsuccessful attempt to become world champion in 2001 against Joe Calzaghe. The lanky and skilful 6-4 fighter from Hamburg should be a hot candidate to win the European crown or a world title at 168 pounds in 2004.
