After rebounding to score early-round knockouts in his next three bouts, Bailey captured the World Boxing Association (WBA) version of the 140-pound title with a third-round KO over Demetrio Ceballos on Feb. 2, 2002. In Bailey’s initial defense on May 11, 2002, Diosbelys Hurtado stopped the champion in the seventh round in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
