Vivek W. (ESB):I’ll start by saying that as much as I support him for the sport, I don’t think I’m ready to go out on that limb that you and others have quickly jumped too! I say that in light humor, but to be very clear, I won’t be part of that ‘pendulum’ swinging we see every time a fighter does something of this nature. I can remember this rhetoric after Donaire’s KO victory over Darchinyan, Pavlik’s KO victory over Taylor, and so forth! When we look at all of the men who stunned us with KO performances in fights we didn’t anticipate a KO, they each have one thing in common: they fell flat against a man with the skills to out-think them, and the toughness to outlast them.

(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) MEXICO CITY (June 30, 2013) – “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo” press tour continued on a beautiful summer Sunday in Mexico’s capital city where local police estimated that 32,000 excitable fans turned out at Monumento de los Niños Heroes to greet pound-for-pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather and national hero Canelo Alvarez.

Mexican television network Televisa covered the proceedings, which, like the previous six stops on this unprecedented press tour, was part press conference and part fan rally.

“Triple G” Golovkin destroys Macklin

Well, the questions about Gennady Golovkin (Triple G) were answered Saturday night at the MGM Grand at Foxwood, Mashantucket, CT, and answered emphatically. The main attraction of HBO’s Boxing After Dark was going to be Triple G’s toughest test. Finally, in the Irishman named Matthew Macklin, he would be facing someone who was a tried, true and tested full-sized middleweight. However, it was a short examination and he passed with flying colors. The fight opened with Macklin trying to be the aggressor. He pressed forward, but wasn’t effective. Triple G was moving just enough, slipping punches, and watching and studying. No more than a minute passed, and things changed. Now, Triple G was the aggressor, but the difference was his attack was effective.

Who could have possibly failed to have been mightily impressed by Gennady Golovkin’s one-punch KO over the very experienced Matthew Macklin last night? “GGG,” was being spoken about as the single hardest puncher in boxing today BEFORE his brutal body shot win over the brave and gutsy, and usually durable Macklin – now, fans everywhere are even more excited about the softly spoken fighter from Kazakhstan who holds the WBA and IBO 160-pound titles.

Many good experts felt Macklin – who had pushed Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez hard in previous title challenges – would test the unbeaten 31-year-old. Instead, Golovkin, 27-0(24) won in sensationally devastating style. But the ride could be just beginning for “GGG,” his team and his ever-growing number of fans. Traditionally, boxing fans adore a puncher, to the extent that they are ready and willing to part with hard cash to see one in action. Golovkin, as surely everyone agrees, is a pure puncher. Gennady Golovkin defeats Macklin in 3rd round KO

(June 29, 2013) – Powerful World Boxing Association & International Boxing Organization World middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (27-0, 24 KOs) stopped challenger Matthew “Mack The Knife” Macklin (29-5, 20 KOs) with a lethal body shot in the third round, headlining tonight’s HBO Triple-Header, presented by K2 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, in the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Golovkin stalked the game Irishman and finished the fight at 1:22 of the third round with a vicious left hook to Macklin’s ribs, sending a strong signal to the entire 160-pound division that the Kazakh is a true force.

Golovkin destroys Macklin in 3rd round; Oosthuizen-Gonzales ends in draw

762 (Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) made easy work of Britain’s Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) in stopping him in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. The end came from a left hand to the midsection that sent Macklin down face first on the canvas.

Macklin then stayed down for the full count. The fight was then stopped by referee Eddie Cotton at 1:24 of the round.

Golovkin methodically beat Macklin down in the three rounds, nailing him with monstrous shots over and over each time he’d catch up to him to land. Macklin started off trying to mix it up with Golovkin in the 1st round, but after getting shook up with a right hand, Macklin got on his bike and moved for the rest of the fight.

Maidana waiting to see what Broner will do – fight him or vacate

Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) is the mandatory challenger for WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) and he’s waiting to hear if Broner will choose to fight him or give up his newly won WBA title. Broner is going to have to make a decision soon because he can’t just sit on the title. Maidana doesn’t care either way.

If Broner gives up the title, Maidana will likely face the winner of the Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves for the vacant WBA title. If Broner decides he wants to take the risky fight against him, then Maidana is ready and looking forward to fight him.

Crolla beats Rees by a controversial decision

In a highly controversial decision, Anthony Crolla (26-4-1,9 KO’s) labored to a 12 round majority over Gavin (37-3-1, 18 KO’s) to grab the vacant WBO Inter-Continental lightweight title at the Bolton Arena, Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom. The judges scores were 115-113 and 116-113 for Crolla, and 115-115 even. This was a really strange fight, because I’ve never seen a fighter get out-landed and outworked as much as I saw Crolla, and yet still win the fight. Talk about your controversial decisions.

It was a very questionable decision in that Rees landed more shots in every round of the fight, was the much busier guy in every round, and landed the cleaner shots. I saw Rees winning almost the rounds. The only rounds I could give Crolla were the 3rd and 11th, and even in those rounds, Rees outlanded him.

Crolla had the crowd in his favor big time in this fight, and the outcome was not surprising. Crolla was getting cheered even when he missing shots; whereas the crowd was deathly silent each time Rees landed, which quite often.

De La Hoya: Canelo vs. Mayweather = the perfect storm to break records

(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) Oscar De La Hoya thinks the September 14th match-up between Golden Boy promoted Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. has a good possibility of breaking the pay per view record set between himself and Mayweather many years ago in 2007.

De La Hoya sees the Mayweather-Canelo fight being on that magnitude due to Canelo’s huge popularity in addition to Mayweather’s huge fan base. De La Hoya feels the mix of the two will create a huge demand for this fight on PPV come September 14th.

Sanchez: Golovkin will blast out Macklin within 5 rounds

Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) is really up against it tonight with his fight against IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) on HBO. Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez sees this fight not lasting more than 5 rounds tops, and the rest of the boxing world pretty much sees the same thing happening.

Macklin is simply made to order for Golovkin to knockout in their fight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
