Beristain likes Canelo’s chances of beating Mayweather

alvarez3Trainer Nacho Beristain, trainer for Juan Manuel Marquez, believes WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) has a good chance of beating Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) three months from now because of Canelo’s combination punching and ability to dodge punches with his head movement.

Beristain told deportes.univision.com “I want Canelo to win. It would be a historic achievement for the Mexican boxing world. I hope the result is good for Canelo. He has a good chance because he throws nice combinations and he avoids punches. He’s looking more solid and he’s definitely the new Mexican boxing idol.”

Fury chooses not to face Pulev in IBF eliminator; Haye fight now likely

fury2Unbeaten British heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) will likely be facing former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye next after the purse bid for the Fury vs. Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KO’s) IBF eliminator bout was cancelled when Fury’s management opted not to take part in it.

The winner of the Fury-Pulev fight would have become the IBF mandatory challenger for IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Fury and his promoter had talked about wanting to take that course for a title shot against Wladimir, but it looks like they had a change of mind.

Mayweather vs. Canelo: Will Saul’s 20 lb. weight advantage help him beat Floyd?

canelo00Golden Boy Promotions has done a good job of parking their fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30’s) in the junior middleweight division instead of at middleweight, which is where the 172 lb. Canelo should be fighting given his weight. But by parking Canelo at a weight that he’s barely making at 154, Canelo has big advantage over the welterweights that Golden Boy is matching against him.

I’m not talking junior middleweights because Golden Boy has been mainly matching Canelo up with pumped up welterweights. The exception to that was Canelo’s fights against Austin Trout and Ryan Rhodes, but the Trout fight was a very close one and probably should have been scored a draw, if not a victory for Trout in my view.

What’s next for Carl Froch: Rubber match, Resume, Rematches or Revenge?

froch92 Carl “The Cobra” Froch has been sounding a lot like Floyd ”Money” Mayweather in the days following his huge payback win over Mikkel Kessler, which was broadcast by HBO in the United States, and Sky Sports PPV live from the O2 Arena in London, England. In so many words, Carl Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn are saying, “all roads lead to Carl Froch”. Like Floyd as well, he says he has 3 or 4 major fights before he calls it a day.

All jokes aside he does have plenty of option on the table. One is the rubber match with Mikkel Kessler. Another is a resume booster with a Bernard Hopkins fights. A Rematch with the winner of Jean Pascal vs. Lucian Bute Fight would be a good business move. And last but not least a revenge opportunity with Andre Ward.

The Edge of Fight: Helena’s Duran Caferro Stays Active June 8

Young boxers can never find a single good reason as to why they should remain inactive. In marked contrast, seasoned boxers often become so sedentary – generally fighting no more than twice a year – that it drives fans insane with frustration.

Helena lightweight Duran Caferro Jr., 135 pounds, age 24, with a professional record of 5-1, sees no reason to wait for the ping of the next bell.

I’ll Take That Bet – Alvarez vs. Mayweather Jr.

mayweather223Wow! Who’d a thunk it? Little Money is apparently going to do it. He’s finally going to fight someone who the fans want him to fight. His right hand man Leonard Ellerbe is already spouting talk about Little Money beating Alvarez even if he weighs two hundred pounds. That already seems to be a stretch of the truth, because, according to more than one source, it looks as though there will be a “catch weight” of 152 imposed?. Do they (Money Team) know something about Alvarez we don’t?

The early odds are about 2 to 2 1/2 in Little Money’s favor. It doesn’t look good for Alvarez fans. The experts apparently aren’t giving Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’ much for his undefeated record (1 draw).. After all Little Money has beaten the Golden Boy (SD), Sugar Shane and Cotto. He also proved Juan Manuel Marquez shouldn’t have been fighting welterweights, at least not without help from Angel Guillermo “Memo” Heridia.

Is Floyd Making A Big Mistake with Canelo?

alvarez4354If I was WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez I would pinch myself because he has been given a huge advantage in what will become the most important fight of his life. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is clearly underestimating his opponent by not calling for a catch-weight or a rehydration limit. This will hurt Floyd greatly and he may soon regret this dubious decision!

Boxing is a sport where respecting your opponents strengths is of the utmost importance. In this case, Floyd seems oblivious to Canelo’s physical strength and punching power. Floyd Mayweather seems to believe that allowing Canelo Alvarez the extra weight will make him slower and thus make it easier to pop shot him and win a decision!

Mayweather silences critics by facing Canelo

floyd#20 As I grabbed my tea and began to check the sports news the headlines read; Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. Canelo “Ginger” Alvarez is on for September 14, 2013! I nearly jumped out of my chair with excitement. Finally, Mayweather is fighting a younger, bigger, stronger opponent who has the power and zip to knock him out. No disrespect to Robert Guerrero, but most people who follow boxing knew he didn’t have the skills and the speed to deal with Mayweather.

Just as soon as I went to the boxing websites to read other articles and get more clarity I was met with the usual Mayweather hating banter. The fight as announced will be at a catch weight of 152 lbs. Mayweather was very critical of Manny Pacquiao for fighting champions at catch weights and winning their belts although he never made the weight. Now Mayweather in the eyes of some is being viewed as a hypocrite for fighting Alvarez at a catch weight.

Mayweather-Alvarez: Is Canelo ready for this fight?

alvarez432 Floyd Mayweather announced to the world today, via Instagram, that he would give boxing fans what they wanted and he would take on Saul Alvarez on September 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

You have to commend Mayweather, as he has taken the most dangerous fighter possible and the man who many feel will eventually take over his crown, as the king of boxing, once “Money” Mayweather decides to hang up the gloves.

But you have to wonder if the decision to take on Alvarez has come too quickly, and if the young star is indeed ready.

Alvarez has certainly done the round, that’s no question.
