Golovkin/Rubio: “Mexican Style” Weigh In Coverage

http://youtu.be/KEQTwNP0GCA

Records are going to be set tomorrow night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. In fact the promoters had to set up several sets of bleachers at the top of the bowl just to accommodate the expected over-capacity crowd. If the fan response at today’s weigh in was any indication, they may want to go ahead and set up a couple more.

Rubio fails to make weight for Golovkin fight

Rubio fails to make weight for Golovkin fight

Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) failed to make weight today at the weigh-in for his big fight on Saturday night against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs). Rubio tried to get down to the 160 pound limit, but he reached a sticking point at 161.8 pounds and he couldn’t get any lower than that.

Rubio stripped down in a vain attempt to make the weight, but it was clear he wasn’t going to be able to make the weight. By not making weight, Rubio will lose $100,000 of his $450,000 purse for the fight. This obviously was poor planning on Rubio’s part because the warning signs were there a month ago when Rubio weighed in at 174.5 pounds. In contrast, Golovkin weighed just 165 pounds at the time.

Roach: Haymon won’t let his fighters face Pacquiao, he’s scared

Roach: Haymon won’t let his fighters face Pacquiao, he’s scared

Freddie Roach, the trainer for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, says that high powered adviser/manager Al Haymon won’t let his fighters like Danny Garcia and Floyd Mayweather Jr fight Pacquiao because he’s scared of him. Roach doesn’t buy the excuses about the fighters and Haymon not liking Bob Arum of Top Rank. Roach thinks Haymon is basically afraid of the 35-year-old Pacquiao.

“Al Haymon will not fight Manny Pacquiao, guarantee that,” Roach said to Rappler.com. “Because they’re scared, all of them. His lead guy all the way down. It’s not going to happen. All of the excuses about they don’t like Bob Arum; it’s just excuses.”

Broner would get stopped by Maidana in rematch, says Robert Garcia

Broner would get stopped by Maidana in rematch, says Robert Garcia

Adrien Broner (29-1, 22 KOs) said on his Twitter yesterday that he wants to avenge his loss to former two division world champion Marcos Maidana before he looks to fight the other big names like Manny Pacquiao, Lucas Matthysse and Juan Manuel Marquez. Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia says he’d like to see Maidana fight Broner again, because he feels that Maidana would knock Broner unconscious if that fight were to happen.

“It’s always fun to hear something Broner says,” Garcia said via Fighthype.com. “He’s one that I actually like to see him fight. That’s up to his managers. We could do it. That’s no problem with me. In the rematch, I think Maidana knocks him out cold.”

Mikey Garcia vacates WBO 130lb title, moves up to 140

Mikey Garcia vacates WBO 130lb title, moves up to 140

In what has to be seen as a bold move on the part of Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs), he’s vacated his World Boxing Organization super featherweight title and will be moving up to light welterweight instead of lightweight. Garcia can no longer make super featherweight, and he’s too big for the lightweight division as well.

Mikey’s going to try and fight at light welterweight, but obviously if things don’t work out well for him in that weight class then you can expect him to find a way to get back down to super featherweight or at least lightweight.

Left-Hook Lounge Mailbag – Mayweather vs Khan, Golovkin, Donaire, & Steven A. Smith

Left-Hook Lounge Mailbag - Mayweather vs Khan, Golovkin, Donaire, & Steven A. Smith

Barry N. (Houston, TX): Floyd Mayweather has ripped several people in the news lately and it’s not only uncalled for, but also kind of hard to understand it all. What do you think is really going on with him lately?

Vivek W. (ESB): The on-going drama we’ve seen lately between these four men have somewhat reached a boiling point. While Smith and Mayweather Sr. have stepped away from the table, it seems little Floyd and Khan still have a few things to air out, which we’ve heard lately. There are so many different angles to this discussion that I don’t even know where to start, but I guess the safest statement for me to lead off with is the fact that I think there’s a hint of truth to all of their respective positions, with the exception of maybe Steven A. Smith’s.
