WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto says he recently detailed what he’s looking for to make money wise for his fight against the red-haired Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on May 2nd. He’s now waiting to hear back from his side to see what they say about it.
The Cotto-Canelo fight, if it gets made, will be televised on HBO pay-per-view, and it’s expected to be a huge money fight where both fighters will likely get a career payday if everything goes right.
Unbeaten Deontay Wilder (32-0, 32 KOs) has little doubt that he’ll be victorious next month in his fight against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) on January 17th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wilder feels that he’ll get the win but he might not get the credit for the victory because he thinks that a lot of boxing fans will still doubt him.
Beating the 36-year-old Stiverne will go a long ways towards proving Deontay’s many detractors wrong, because Stiverne is considered to be a good fighter by a lot of fans. However, for the 6’7” Wilder to really prove himself, he’s going to need to beat other contenders like Bryant Jennings, Alexander Povetkin, Carlos Takam, Tyson Fury and Kubrat Pulev.
Amir Khan bristled at the recent news that Floyd Mayweather Jr said that he’s not worth fighting because his name doesn’t hold value in the United States because the casual boxing fans have no clue who Khan is. Khan feels that he’s more popular than two of Mayweather’s past opponents Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero. Khan also says that he’s got a large following in India and Pakistan, and if Mayweather wants to be a global star then he needs to fight him.
I’m not sure that Mayweather cares if Khan has tons of fans in India and Pakistan though, because Mayweather is mainly looking for opponents that are big stars in the United States. That’s where the pay-per-view buys will be coming from, not India or Pakistan.
Amir Khan isn’t satisfied with possibly getting a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2015. If that fight happens, Khan says he then hopes to fight Manny Pacquiao at the end of the year. If Khan gets his wish, he’ll have faced the two biggest stars in the sport of boxing in one year.
Khan is one of the candidates for Mayweather’s next fight in early 2015.
Mayweather recently said that he’s not interested in facing Khan, because the fight he wants is against Pacquiao on May 2nd. However, Mayweather may have no other choice but to fight Khan if he can’t get a fight against Pacquiao in the first part of the year.
Promoter Frank Warren confirmed today that Tyson Fury will headline London’s O2 Arena on Saturday 28th February in his final fight before going on to challenge for the WBO World Heavyweight Championship.
The undefeated Manchester star will face a top 15 ranked contender to be announced as he keeps busy ahead of a long-awaited shot at reigning WBO World Champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Fury put on the best performance of his career last month when he defeated Dereck Chisora for a second time, completely shutting out the Londoner with a dominant performance over ten rounds before Chisora was retired by his corner.
HBO commentator Max Kellerman thinks that Floyd Mayweather Jr is in a tough position to where he’ll either need to move off his next fight date on May 2nd on the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo or he’ll need to accept a fight against Manny Pacquiao. Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank are both working on setting up a fight between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for May 2nd.
If Mayweather, who likes to fight on the Mexican holidays, decides that he absolutely must fight on Cinco de Mayo on May 2nd, then he’s going to need to have a popular enough opponent to bump Canelo and Cotto from off that date. Pacquiao would be the only opponent popular enough to move Canelo-Cotto off that date.
Amir Khan got a bit of bad news today with Floyd Mayweather Jr revealing that he has zero interest in fighting the British fighter due to him seeing Khan as a guy that casual boxing fans in the United States have no clue about. Mayweather says Khan is someone that only the boxing community knows about, and he’s not interested in facing a guy that the casual fans aren’t aware of.
Instead, Mayweather says his main focus is on fighting Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd next year when he plans on fighting again. However, Mayweather isn’t sure if that fight can be made due to Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum recently coming out and saying that he doesn’t want Pacquiao to fight Mayweather on May 2nd because that’s a Mexican holiday date.
In a recent interview with Showtime’s Steve Farhood, Floyd Mayweather Jr. made it absolutely clear that he is ready to cross the ropes and face Manny Pacquiao on May 2 of next year:
“I’d love to fight Manny Pacquiao”;”Bob Arum is stopping the fight. We have been trying to make this fight happen behind the scenes for years now, but the fans and the people have been fooled because they have been listening to people on just one side. Now it’s time for us to talk. We want to fight. We’re ready. Let’s make it happen May 2nd, Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. Let’s do it!”, “Let’s make this fight happen for the people and for the fans, Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, May 2nd, ‘Cinco de Mayweather,” were some of the things that Money May stated during the interview.
There was plenty going on in the world of boxing over the weekend; what with British star Amir Khan turning in a near perfect display against Devon Alexander, in doing so winning his must-win fight in brilliant style. We also saw Tim Bradley go to war with Diego Chaves over 12 eventful rounds, after which apparent winner Bradley had a badly swollen left side of his face and a controversial draw to show for it.
We also heard, over and over again, Floyd Mayweather Junior calling out Manny Pacquiao – even if the bold and committed words Mayweather bellowed into the Showtime microphone have come at least five years later than they should have done (and there are still many doubters who are yet to be convinced the fight will go ahead, yawn!). And we saw hotshot welterweight and Mayweather wannabe opponent Keith Thurman put on a perfectly commanding yet roundly booed showing against another tough nut in Leonard Bundu. Indeed, it was one interesting, not to mention long, night in Vegas.
Erik Skoglund (22-0, 11 KOs) took another step towards a world title challenge with a unanimous points victory over Jamaican veteran Glen Johnson (54-20-2, 37 KOs) on Saturday night at the Albertslund MusikTeatret in Copenhagen.
The rising Swedish star proved too much for the former IBF World Light Heavyweight Champion, and after ten rounds of action the judges scored the fight 98-92, 97-93 and 97-93.
‘I was pleased with my performance,’’ said Skoglund. ‘It might sound cocky to say, but I felt I was the better boxer on the night. I was one step ahead of him in everything I did. I’ve proved I’m ready for a world level opposition. I want to challenge for a world title in 2015!’’
