Roach: Canelo vs. Golovkin is never going to happen

Trainer Freddie Roach believes that boxing fans are never going to see a match-up between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA 160lb champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs). Roach doesn’t say why he doesn’t believe the fight will happen, but it’s likely due to the huge risk involved for Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Canelo.

“You know that fights [Canelo-Golovkin] never going to happen,” Roach said to tha boxing voice. “I like Triple G. I think he’s a great fighter. I think he’s one of the best fighters in the world. No [he’s not a draw].”

Arum: Pacquiao could rethink retirement and return

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum thinks we could see Manny Pacquiao rethinking the idea of retirement after he gets done with his next fight against Tim Bradley on 4/9. As of now, Pacquiao is talking about going into permanent retirement after the fight, which will be televised on HBO PPV.

Arum thinks we could see Pacquiao change his mind about retirement after the fight for some reason. Pacquiao says he wants to retire because he needs to focus his energy on his political career in the Philippines. Pacquiao is running for office in May for a senate seat, and he’s said to be in a great position to get the spot. Being a senator is hard work and a demanding job.

Golovkin could face Dominic Wade next

By Abdi Haid: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin would like nothing better than to face WBC 160lb champ Saul Canelo Alvarez in his next fight in April so that he can get the fight over with and pick up the WBC strap from the catch-weight champion, but Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions don’t want the fight with Golovkin yet. The two fighters are supposed to take interim fights in April and May before working out a deal for a fight later this year in September.

Golovkin doesn’t have an opponent for his next fight. That’s a problem. His promoters at K2 couldn’t work out a deal with WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders.

Thurman: When is Danny Garcia ever impressive?

WBA World welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman says he wasn’t impressed with what he saw from Danny “Swift” Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) in his 12 round unanimous decision win over Robert Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) last Saturday night from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Garcia won by the scores of 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112.

Thurman asks the question ‘when is Garcia ever impressive in his fights?’ Thurman believes that Garcia did just enough to get the win over Guerrero by relaxing and taking over the fight in the second half of the bout. In Thurman’s mind, he saw Garcia as the winner of the contest.

Kell Brook targeting big names for summer fight

IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) wants to make sure that if he doesn’t get the big fight against Amir Khan this summer that he’s been longing for, then he’ll at least wind up with one big name for him to fight at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. Brook says he wants to fight the winner of the Keith Thurman – Shawn Porter fight, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Danny Garcia or the winner of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley fight.

It shouldn’t be a problem for Brook to get at least one of those names if his promoter Eddie Hearn is willing to give them the same $10 million payday that Amir Khan would be receiving if he agreed to a fight against Brook.

Vivek W. (B247): I think the career of Danny Garcia leaves room for both, great praise, and great criticism. More often than not, I’ve been openly critical of him, for the simple fact that I think his stock has dropped tremendously after the Matthysse bout due to uneven performances and poor choice of opponents. That said, I think he’s right on par for where he needs to be at this stage in his career. On 32 nights spanning 9 years, he has faced a variety of opposition and found a way to win, even if some weren’t as pretty as most would like.
