Former WBC super-middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell (27-1-1, 22ko), begins his rebuilding tomorrow afternoon (US time) against fringe-level Mexican veteran and 2x world title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio (59-7-1, 51ko) on the PBC on CBS card that comes from the American Bank Centre, Corpus Christi, Texas.
The fight follows on from Dirrell’s upset defeat at the hands of Sweden’s Badou Jack last April, in which the Michigan man dropped the belt he won against teak-tough veteran Sakio Bika in August 2014. He was taking the voluntary defence instead of fighting Britain’s George Groves, who had stepped aside, and the plan backfired on him when Jack edged a MD, leaving him with no choice but to go on the rebuilding trail.
Ahead of his October 24th challenge to long dominant lineal champion Wladimir Klitschko, that takes place at the 56,000 capacity Esprit Arena, in Dusseldorf, Germany, Britain’s Tyson Fury has stated that if he can’t beat what he sees as an aging fighter in the champion, then he must be, by his own admission, ‘useless’.

This Sunday afternoon the PBC on CBS will bring boxing fans a rematch between Jamie Mcdonnell and Tomoki Kameda. Their first meeting back in May on CBS was a two-way affair and the second time around has only increased the stakes at hand. Can Mcdonnell have the same continued success he found after coming off the mat? Will Kameda use a smarter game plan rather than head hunting as he found himself doing after scoring the early knockdown?
Jamie Mcdonnell seems a bit distracted heading into the rematch with Tomoki Kameda. Mcdonnell has spoke of future opponents like Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton but can’t afford to look ahead. After all it was a debatable victory Kameda with all three scorecards reading 114-113. That’s not to say that Jamie didn’t fight well enough to deserve the win. But it was a close fight that could have gone to either man or ended in a draw.
As he continues to fight on at 46, it would seem that future Hall of Fame Inductee Roy Jones Jr has again dipped his finger into training, this time helping to prepare Russian WBA (reg) champion Fedor Chudinov for his September 26th maiden defence against Frank Buglioni in London.
After a brief flirtation training welterweight contender Jessie Vargas recently, Jones, who boxes in England himself on September 12th, has turned his attention to the Eastern European fighter, perhaps owing in part to his close relationship with Chudinov’s promoter Vlad Hrunov.
Britain’s insanely popular featherweight contender Josh Warrington (21-0, 4ko) goes to battle in Leeds tonight in a defence of the Commonwealth title, against Australia’s Joel Brunker, in what will represent the toughest test of the Yorkshireman’s career to date.
The relatively intriguing headline fight at the First Direct Arena, is carrying an otherwise average-at-best card, and Warrington will need to be at his very best if he is to prevail against the dangerous former Olympian, whose sole blemish is a stoppage loss to current IBF 126lb champion, Lee Selby, 10 months ago.
