Left-Hook Lounge: Rigondeaux/HBO, Matthysse/Garcia, & Ward/Golovkin!

rigondeaux55Mario R. (Atlanta, GA): HBO put pressure on Arum to make the Donaire/Rigondeaux fight, but have somewhat distanced themselves from Rigondeaux after he defeated the fighter they strongly supported? I know this is a sensitive issue, but would you attribute this to race, considering how difficult it has been to promote certain fighters?

Vivek W. (ESB): Looking at this issue from 10,000ft, I think some would say it’s probably a mere coincidence. When we dig beneath the surface of this situation and get to the core, without doubt we have to acknowledge that this is a business, and investments have to be made in any business. When these networks have to shell out big dollars to put on a show, they’re going to make sure that investment is well spent.

Twice for Price: The sequel at the Echo Arena

By Andrew Picken: Boxing don’t you just love it. Last night another drama worthy of any Eastenders or Coronation Street Script unfolded with the unthinkable happening … Price stopped again. Inevitably the criticisms will start rolling in thick and fast, I have my opinion but let’s be honest hindsight is a wonderful skill. Besides I like Price he comes across, articulated, intelligent and composed outside of the ring and this loss will be a really difficult time for promoter and fighter.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr: 200 million ring circus

Mayweather with fan(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Marc Livitz: There are numerous individuals in this world who seem to have nothing better to do than to willingly succumb to society’s temptations and the desire to have the best of everything. The clearer and clearer an obvious illusion becomes, the more some are clamoring to obtain whatever is necessary to feed their materialistic fetish.

There are of course others who are just as quick to call a trough a trough. Many of us perhaps have seen the financial figures for the most successful movies of all time and how their respective totals look once they are adjusted for inflation.

Mayweather and Canelo Invade Houston, TX!

IMG_5983The unprecedented Mayweather-Canelo Press Tour continued on 07/01/2013 with another pit stop in Texas’ largest city: Houston, TX. As early as 8:00 AM in the first July morning of the year, fans began to flock to Houston’s Minute Maid Park Union Station. Although not as big as Mexico City’s mind-boggling turnout of 30,000+ fans, fellow Houstonians were ready to give the two boxing superstars a big Texas-sized welcome!

They say everything is bigger in Texas. This event was no exception.

Minute Maid Park’s Union Station was filled to capacity that left plenty of fans out in the heat as the festivities commenced. That did not discourage hardcore fans from sticking around. Once inside, the roaring fans let their voices heard. The red carpet was rolled out and the fans were restless with excitement. Was this a Mayweather or Canelo crowd?

Golovkin impressive in destroying Macklin

Almost 48 hours ago the inevitable happened, as widely predicted Gennady Golovkin stopped Matthew Macklin within the distance. To just state that fact alone though does not do the performance justice. Many questioned whether Golovkin’s ‘power’ and recent run of stoppages was down to mediocre opponent, handpicked to increase his marketability.

Left-Hook Lounge: Golovkin, Mayweather, Ward, and many more!!!

golovkin455Kevin H. (Cincinnatti, OH): Golovkin has impressed me more than any fighter in the sport today. I just don’t see anyone stopping this guy, but I can see him stopping whoever they put in front of him! What are your thoughts about him and who do you want to see him face?

Vivek W. (ESB):I’ll start by saying that as much as I support him for the sport, I don’t think I’m ready to go out on that limb that you and others have quickly jumped too! I say that in light humor, but to be very clear, I won’t be part of that ‘pendulum’ swinging we see every time a fighter does something of this nature. I can remember this rhetoric after Donaire’s KO victory over Darchinyan, Pavlik’s KO victory over Taylor, and so forth! When we look at all of the men who stunned us with KO performances in fights we didn’t anticipate a KO, they each have one thing in common: they fell flat against a man with the skills to out-think them, and the toughness to outlast them.

Gennady Golovkin: Superstardom Awaits!

YouTube video
Matthew Macklin: ‘Golovkin Is Way Way Better Than Martinez’

Who could have possibly failed to have been mightily impressed by Gennady Golovkin’s one-punch KO over the very experienced Matthew Macklin last night? “GGG,” was being spoken about as the single hardest puncher in boxing today BEFORE his brutal body shot win over the brave and gutsy, and usually durable Macklin – now, fans everywhere are even more excited about the softly spoken fighter from Kazakhstan who holds the WBA and IBO 160-pound titles.

Many good experts felt Macklin – who had pushed Felix Sturm and Sergio Martinez hard in previous title challenges – would test the unbeaten 31-year-old. Instead, Golovkin, 27-0(24) won in sensationally devastating style. But the ride could be just beginning for “GGG,” his team and his ever-growing number of fans. Traditionally, boxing fans adore a puncher, to the extent that they are ready and willing to part with hard cash to see one in action. Golovkin, as surely everyone agrees, is a pure puncher. More than that, though, Golovkin has skills, speed, class and a fine boxing brain. The sky really is the limit for him.

Golovkin destroys Macklin in 3rd round; Oosthuizen-Gonzales ends in draw

762(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) made easy work of Britain’s Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) in stopping him in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA. The end came from a left hand to the midsection that sent Macklin down face first on the canvas.

Macklin then stayed down for the full count. The fight was then stopped by referee Eddie Cotton at 1:24 of the round.

Golovkin methodically beat Macklin down in the three rounds, nailing him with monstrous shots over and over each time he’d catch up to him to land. Macklin started off trying to mix it up with Golovkin in the 1st round, but after getting shook up with a right hand, Macklin got on his bike and moved for the rest of the fight.
