Saturday, September 5, 2015, former Heavyweight Champion Shannon “The Cannon” Briggs (59-6-1, 52 KOs) continued his campaign for a title shot by knocking out Florida native Michael Marrone (21-5, 15 KOs) in the second round of a scheduled twelve-round bout.

Briggs retired from boxing after losing to Vitali Klitschko by unanimous decision in 2010. In 2014, he returned to boxing hoping to secure another world title shot. Since his April, 2014 return, Briggs has won all eight of his bouts with seven coming by KO. Of Briggs’ last eight opponents, Marrone is only the second to make it through the first round.

Faded former heavyweight champ, Shannon Briggs, made short work of unheralded and overmatched foe Michael Marrone last night, fighting in front of a small, but star studded and raucous crowd at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena, in Hollywood, Florida.

It took less than 2 rounds for Briggs, who turns 44 at the end of the year, to dispose of his hapless foe, flooring Marrone with a big right hand to the head at the end of the first round, immediately knocking any desire out of him, as former heavyweight luminaries such as Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis – all in town for the weekend’s gathering of former heavyweight legends – looked on.

Oh dear I thought, as I made my way through the boisterous crowd making their way to the Notting Hill Carnival on Saturday evening, their jovial behavior made me begin to doubt that my decision to travel to the other side of the city, to attend the season opening event at York Hall was actually worth it, but in the end I decided to persevere and to be honest am really glad I did.

I arrived later than planned, expecting to have missed the first bout as it was gone 7pm, only to find that it hadn’t actually started and instead of walking in half way through a bout I was greeted by the sight of a troupe of dancers twirling in the ring.

“Rockin” Robin Deakin, cruelly branded ‘Britain’s worst boxer’ by the national press in the UK – before using the tag for his own promotional ends – has taken the first crucial step to regaining his British licence by getting a much needed win on Saturday, defeating Latvia’s Deniss Kornilovs by 4 round points decision at London’s famous York Hall, winning every round.

The battle-hardened trier was born severely disabled with a condition called Talipes – an affliction affecting the legs that was so serious his parents were told he may never even walk, let alone fight – a fact the red-tops in Britain repeatedly fail to mention, alongside his more than respectable amateur career that saw 46 wins from 76 contests.

Mosley/Mayorga 2: Shane Wins Pointless Battle of Veterans in 6

From the moment it was announced that aging veterans Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga were set to meet in a rematch of their 2008 encounter, the unenthusiastic groans from boxing fans the world over were audible, more so when they found out that, in America at least, they would be charged a hard to justify $49.95 for the ‘privilege’ of watching it.

Mosley’s attempt at staging his first independent promotion was seemingly cursed from the get-go, with a series of fake PR stunts in the build up, as well as the Don King lawsuit to try and stop Mayorga fighting, that, with hindsight, probably would have ensured a more entertaining main event.

Santa Cruz Captures WBA 126 lb Strap / Mares Rematch & Unification Fights on the Horizon?

After last night’s highly entertaining and hard fought victory over Abner Mares in Los Angeles, Leo Santa Cruz picked up his first featherweight world title after the (vacant) WBA 126 lb strap was added to the mix at the last minute, and the Mexico born star certainly went some way to shaking off the ‘cherry-picker’ tag that has dogged him over recent times, turning in a classy and measured performance, in what was billed as the “Battle of L.A.”

With judge Max De Luca turning in a score of 114-114, to the other two judges 117-111, a strong enough case for a rematch can be made, especially given the high levels of action that began with the visibly smaller Mares starting strong and fast, before gradually being worn down as Santa Cruz found his range and imposed his strength, tattooing Abner with the better quality shots.

In a battle of Southern California featherweights, Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz, (31-0-1, 17 KOs) defeated Abner Mares, (29-2-1, 15 KOs) by majority decision in a fight reminiscent of Mexican wars between boxing legends Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales on Saturday night. Scores tallied 117-111 twice and 114-114 in front of a raucous crowd of 13,109 at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles for the Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN main event.

Shane Mosley beats Ricardo Mayorga

Fighting each other in a long awaited rematch at middleweight, 43-year-old Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) defeated 41-year-old Ricardo Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 KOs) by a 6th round body shot stoppage tonight at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Mosley put Mayorga on the canvas late in the 6th. Fight was halted at that point with one second to go in the round. The official stoppage was at 2:59 of the 6th.

Matthew Macklin Wants One Last Run at a Title / Secures Victory in Marbella Last Night

Former 2x middleweight world title challenger Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22ko) is convinced he has still has more to give at the top level, and took another small step toward getting his career back on track last night in Marbella, when he stopped German club fighter Chris Hermann (19-7-1, 10ko) inside a round on a show put on by the promotional arm of his MGM gymnasium, which is located in the Spanish resort.

‘I touched him (Hermann) with the uppercut to bring his hands up and that gave me the opening to the liver/floating rib area… when you land clean there with a bit of power, not too many guys get up from it,’ Macklin said following the body shot victory.

Trevor Bryan Wins Heavyweight Slugfest Against Derric Rossy

Bryan (16-0, 11 KOs), of Albany, N.Y., dropped the vastly more experienced Rossy (30-10, 14 KOs), of Medford, N.Y., with a flurry of punches 30 seconds into the fight en route to winning one of the most exciting heavyweight fights of the year by the scores of 98-91 twice and 97-92. Round 3 of the slugfest could be a candidate for Round of the Year.
