Poor HBO. Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman started the night off by spending many minutes trying to justify the controversial decision in the Andre SOG Ward over Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev fight. The explanation went this way. Max explained that after reviewing the tapes, he came up with the same score as the judges. They scored it 114-113 for Ward. Max said he had it in favor of Kovalev, but he quickly whitewashed his own opinion by saying, I understand why the judges voted for Ward! Hence, there really wasn’t an explanation, only an excuse. The fact is HBO’s hopes for a classic match-up ended up looking more like an MMA bout with Ward trying to garner points for a “take down”.

Lomachenko Stakes His Claim for Fighter of the Year with Walters Stoppage
He came, He saw, He annihilated. Two-time Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist and two-division world champion VASYL LOMACHENKO (7-1, 5 KOs), successfully defended his World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior lightweight title by stopping undefeated former World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion NICHOLAS “Axe Man” WALTERS (26-1-1, 21 KOs), of Montego Bay, Jamaica, on Saturday at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Walters told referee Tony Weeks he did not want to continue after the seventh round. The fight was televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing®.
Terry Flanagan far too good for Orlando Cruz, scores 8th-round stoppage win – Lomachenko fight next?
History was denied last night in Cardiff, as Puerto Rico’s Orlando Cruz’ attempts at becoming the first openly gay pro boxer to win a world title were thwarted by defending WBO lightweight ruler Terry Flanagan. Flanagan, one of the best yet seemingly underrated fighters in the sport today, crushed Cruz in the 8th-round, scoring two knockdowns that prompted the referee to call a halt.
Flanagan, who retained his title for the fourth time, is now 32-0(13). Cruz, who had moved up to lightweight, falls to 25-5-1(13).
Lomachenko defeats Walters – Results
In a real surprising outcome, WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) got former featherweight champion Nicholas Walters (26-1-1, 21 KOs) to quit after seven rounds on Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Walters looked befuddled all night long, but especially in rounds 4 thru 7.
Results: Carson Jones stops Ben Hall to take vacant WBC International Silver belt
Tonight at Wembley, well-travelled Oklahoma warrior Carson Jones took away Ben Hall’s unbeaten record and also picked up the vacant WBC international silver belt at super-welterweight. Ultra-experienced and teak-tough, Jones scored a 6th-round TKO over Hall, to see his record improve to 40-11-3(30). Hall, hailing from Essex, falls to 9-1-1(2).
One of Two Ways: Kovalev vs. Ward
Convention wisdom dictated that Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward could only go one of two ways, either a Kovalev KO or a Ward decision. As a nearly 2 to 1 favorite, most people assumed that a Ward decision was the most likely scenario. Early in the fight it looked as if Kovalev was well on his way to the upset, punctuated by a fierce knockdown of Ward in the second round. The tide gradually turned and by the fifth round they were fighting on even terms, with Ward appearing to take the majority of the middle rounds. The championship rounds looked to be split, depending on your preference for Kovalev’s more powerful punches, or Ward’s pinpoint ones.
Kovalev-Ward – there has to be a rematch, but will we see one?
The only thing fans are in agreement on regarding last night’s exciting fight between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward (the winner’s name goes first) is there simply has to be a rematch. The razor-thin unanimous decision awarded to Ward instantly became a topic of huge contention, even before either fighter had left the ring in Las Vegas – some even calling the verdict a “robbery,” some saying it is one of the worst they have ever seen.
There was a rematch clause inserted ahead of last night’s bout, so it seems there is a good chance a return fight will happen and soon. Kathy Duva, promoter of Kovalev, is calling for an immediate return. Kovalev, who says he never lost more than three rounds, is not guilty of having sour grapes; he genuinely believes he won the fight. Many millions of fight fans firmly agree with the now former light-heavyweight champ.
Travis Clark and Matt Conway remain undefeated at Wheeling Island Casino!
On the night of the region’s first snow fall, Promoter Jim Frio’s “FALL BRAWL”, the 2nd installment of Revolution Boxing Championships took place Saturday November 19th at the Wheeling Island Casino in Wheeling WV. Despite the weather, a large crowd showed up to support local boxing.
-Things got underway with pro welterweight debut Mike Conway fighting Charleston WV’s (0-2) Christopher Kuhn in a welterweight bout. Conway wasted no time and ended the show early with a devastating left hook body shot in round one. The spike haired Kuhn could not weather the punch at 2:51 of the 1st round.
Judges Swayed – Give Ward the Decision
Sad affair saturday night at Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. Expectations were high. Fans hoped for a classic matchup. What they got was an attempted mugging and resulting robbery. To call Andre Ward’s efforts scientific would be ill-judged, which is what happened with the decision in Ward’s favor.
One simple way to tell who won the fight is to look at each fighter’s face. Andre Ward’s was red, lumpy and swollen. The Krusher’s face was relatively unmarked.
Andre Ward Defeats Sergey Kovalev in Close Decision Results
In front of a packed house at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and live on HBO Pay-Per-View, Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (31-0, 15 KOs)* won a close unanimous decision victory over Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) to steal the WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Titles in a decision that most ringside media thought went the wrong way.
Both fighters were feeling each other out in the first two rounds. The Krusher continued his come-forward attack and knocked Andre down in the second. Ward managed to get up quickly and took several hard shots from Sergey before the bell rang to end the second round. The next several rounds included heavy shots from both fighters and some wrestling-style moments. The majority of the rounds were hard-fought and close. Many writers had the decision going to the other way but all three judges scored the bout 114-113 in favor of Ward.
