Former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (33-1, 23 KOs) had an easy time defeating contender Christian Hammer (22-5, 12 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Friday night in a WBA heavyweight title eliminator at the DIVS, Ekaterinburg, Russia.
The scores 120-107, 120-108 and 118-108. Boxing 247 had Povetkin winning 12 rounds to 0. Hammer looked terrible. As bad as Hammer looked, it’s hard to believe he was ranked in the top 15 at all.
Talk about a supporting bout stealing the show! Last night at The York Hall in the heart of London, welterweights Conor Benn and Cedrick Peynaud showed plenty of heart as they went to war over six breathtaking rounds; the pair each knocking the other down twice for a four-knockdown thriller.
Earlier today in Brisbane, Australia, Jeff Horn made a successful first defence of the WBO welterweight title he won by sensationally upsetting all-time great Manny Pacquiao back in July. Horn, who was well ahead on all three cards at the time, got the TKO win over Cororan of Great Britain in the 11th round. Time was 1:35 and Corcoran, who was pouring blood from a damaged left eye, was saved by his corner who signaled to the referee how he had had enough.
Undefeated light heavyweight Richard “Popeye The Sailor Man” Rivera scored a second-round technical knockout victory at 1:48 over veteran Roberto “El Viejo” Valenzuela from a left hook which Valenzuela was unable to get up from. Rivera improved to 5-0, 4 KOs, with all his wins coming this year.
As fans everywhere know, Guillermo Rigondeaux quit on his stool after six-rounds had been completed in his hugely anticipated fight with Vasyl Lomachenko; the Cuban southpaw claiming he had injured, maybe even broken his left hand. The quit job angered many, and the X-Ray results that have been revealed today – courtesy of a news feature via RingTV.com – are sure to add fuel to the fire of hate being currently aimed at “Rigo.”
In case you missed it, (16-1) underdog Caleb “Golden” Truax 29-3-2 (18KO), pulled off the biggest upset of the year when he whipped IBF world super middleweight champion James “Chunky” DeGale 23-2-1 (14KO). Not only was Caleb facing an uphill battle as the underdog, but he had to do it in the champ’s backyard, the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Hackney Wick, London, UK.
Last night’s fight between Vasiliy Lomachenko (10-1-0, 7 KO) vs. Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-1-0, 11 KO) delivered big on ratings, making it the second highest-rated boxing telecast on cable in 2017, according to Nielsen overnight ratings. It was an electric, full house at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City that watched two of the top ten pound-for-pound fighters in the world, both two-time Olympic gold medal winners, battle it out for the WBO Junior Lightweight World Title. Lomachenko wowed with a sixth-round TKO.
Miguel “Mickey” Roman (58-13, 45 KOs) brought new life to his career with a spectacular and dominant ninth-round technical knockout victory against four-time, two division world champion Orlando “Siri” Salido (44-14, 31 KOs) in a Fight of the Year Candidate and main event of HBO Boxing After Dark at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Roman, a native of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, scored knockdowns in rounds four and eight before the fight was finally stopped at 1:43 of the ninth round after a fight-finishing flurry sent Salido to the canvas for the last time in his career.

Michael Conlan will make a step up in opposition in 2018, according to MTK Global co-founder Matthew Macklin, following the Belfast featherweight’s latest victory in New York last Saturday night.
Former world amateur champion Conlan moved to 5-0 (4KOs) as a pro with a comprehensive six-round points win over Argentina’s Luis Fernando Molina at Madison Square Garden’s Theater.
