For fans of Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) you had better soak in as many fights of the 36-year-old Mayweather Jr. while you still can because he’ll be ending his career next year in September, he says. Mayweather Jr. will finish out his contract with Showtime/CBS and then walk away from the sport a very, very rich man. As long as he doesn’t gamble his money away foolishly or lose it on bad business deals, Mayweather should be able to remain wealthy for the remainder of his life.
Mayweather said to AP from South Africa “September 2015 will be my last.”
Mayweather has walked away from the sport before for a prolonged period after his victory over Ricky Hatton in 2007, and he didn’t come back until 2009. What makes fans think that Mayweather won’t come back in the future if he’s given a big enough offer or if he starts blowing too much of his money on jewelry, cars and gambling? I have a feeling that Mayweather will continue to fight as long as he had the chance of making millions. It would be crazy for him to walk away if he can make $40 million to fight the likes of Marcos Maidana, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
There’s so much money for him to make against guys that aren’t in the same league as him. The two fighters that could possibly give Mayweather problems, Manny Pacquiao and Erislandy Lara, are ones that he’ll likely never fight.
If Mayweather retires in September without fighting Pacquiao it’ll be a big tragedy because he at least should end his career with that fight, if he’s really serious about wanting to retire at that time. A fight against Pacquiao would be a great going away present to the fans that have been paying to see Mayweather fight all these years.
