Conor McGregor still talking Mayweather fight; says he’d go in there to KO Floyd

MMA star Conor McGregor continues to talk and talk about a potential fight with Floyd Mayweather – this despite that fact that Mayweather and Dana White, with whom McGregor is contracted, say there is no real chance it will take place. The UFC champ remains hopeful the fight will happen and at an appearance in Belfast, McGregor spoke to the media about how he sees his chances against Mayweather.

“If I focus with the work ethic I have solely on the sport of boxing, there’s no telling what I could do,” McGregor said. “I would not go in there [against Mayweather] just to show up, I’d go in there to knock [Mayweather] out. He can be hit. He’s been hit before. Age waits for no man. I know the size is on my side. I know the reach is on my side. I know the youth is on my side.”

There is no doubt there would be significant fan interest if McGregor ever did fight Mayweather, and stranger, more unlikely fights have happened (or have they!) McGregor now has a license to box in the state of California and it seems likely he will box someone, anyone, before he tangles with Mayweather – if he ever actually does. And as fans might have read, former two-time world champ Paulie Malignaggi has called McGregor out, even threatening to “knock the beard off his face.”

McGregor, who says he doesn’t even know who Malignaggi is, nevertheless responded to “The Magic Man’s” words.

“Who the f**k is that guy? I don’t know who the f**k that is but I’ll slap the nose off him if he ever mentions my name again,” he said.

Maybe there are enough fans out there who are curious to see if McGregor can box, and who would pay to find out. Would as seasoned a boxer as Malignaggi get in there and totally outbox McGregor, even if, at age 36, Malignaggi is past his best? Or would McGregor’s strength and power, along with the stand up skills he does possess, see him to a win? It would be an impressive achievement if McGregor were to KO Malignaggi. And as to what the reaction would be if McGregor ever KO’d Mayweather – the internet would go clean through the roof if that sensation were ever witnessed!
