A Christmas Carol to Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin (Video)

YouTube video

With Christmas fast approaching, many boxing fans were recently disappointed by the recent news that middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and fellow champion Gennady Golovkin have apparently agreed to terms that allow each man a voluntary defense of his respective version of the WBC middleweight title. Originally the WBC had promised Golovkin an immediate shot at the winner of the recent Canelo-Cotto “middleweight” showdown. However, the WBC didn’t seem to want to force the issue, instead stating that they would prefer a double-header featuring both boxers in order to “build up” a would-be future clash between the two. Note that this is not the first time that the WBC has promised Gennady a title shot that never came to fruition, and if history is any indication, it may still yet be a long while before Golovkin is afforded his chance to become the legitimate middleweight champion.

Canelo WILL Fight Golovkin says De La Hoya / When? say the Fans

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya, has unsuccessfully attempted to try quell the fears of cynical fans that his fighter will attempt to stall or delay a clash with murderous punching fellow middleweight champion [WBA/IBF], Gennady Golovkin, only promising that the fight WILL happen at some stage.

After claiming the WBC middleweight strap, Alvarez told fans and assembled media that he was serious about the Golovkin fight and doesn’t ‘run from anybody,’ an assertion echoed by his promoter, although fan fears that the fight could still be some way off weren’t exactly quelled by a non-committal De La Hoya, who said he needs to weigh things up first before making any decisions.

Canelo: 'Ready for Golovkin'

After capturing the WBC middleweight title against Miguel Cotto in their highly entertaining fight in Las Vegas last night, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has stated that he will happily fight destructive Kazakh champ, Gennady Golovkin, in accordance with his ‘anybody/anytime’ boxing philosophy.

Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the title held by Alvarez, and going into last night’s fight, ‘Canelo’ had been reluctant to answer questions about the WBA/IBF boss, who had stepped aside to allow the fight with Cotto to happen.

'Canelo Has Cement Feet & Looked Drained' says Teddy Atlas

Atlas, who has just enjoyed a successful corner debut with Bradley, initially believed that Canelo was going to be too young and strong for Cotto, although having watched the Mexican come in bang on the 155 c/w limit, Atlas feels the hugely popular young star looks drained.

Marquez: 'Experience an Important Factor in Cotto/Canelo

Mexican modern great, Juan Manuel Marquez has spoken out ahead of tonight’s Mexico v Puerto Rico catch-weight clash between Miguel Cotto and ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, to wisely state ‘experience will be the key.’

Marquez, ostensibly now retired following injury, though refusing to confirm or deny as much, was keen to state if the fight is in any way close, that it could well be the 35 year old Puerto Rican who emerges the victor, thanks to his top-level experience, which far exceeds that of the younger Alvarez.
