Chavez Jr: I Want Ward, GGG or Even Canelo

Chavez Jr: I Want Ward, GGG or Even Canelo

It can’t have been easy being the son of a famous Mexican boxing great and feeling the pressure from a young age to follow in your father’s footsteps and live up to his achievements. I think most people would always feel second best or embark upon a different career choice entirely, yet not Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who – for all his numerous faults – has attempted (or was forced) to follow the family boxing tradition with mixed results over the years.

Chavez’s ring return comes in 8 days time when he fights Marcos Reyes, and it’s being seen as nothing more than a bounce-back fight for the Mexican former 160 lb champion after he seemingly quit on his stool against Andrzej Fonfara back in April in their 172 lb catch-weight clash.

Chavez Jr Calling People Out Already??? "Desperate" To Redeem Himself?

On twitter this morning I came across a tweet from Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-2-1, 32ko) that simply read,

“@jcchavezjr vs @MartinMurrayBox next?”

It took me by surprise anyway! Barely 10 days on from the embarrassing “quit” episode against Andrzej Fonfara, and the scathing online criticism of his performance, Chavez Jr seems to be seeking a chance at retribution.

Brits will be more than familiar with Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12ko), who we last saw bravely take GGG 11 rounds before finally being stopped. American’s will most probably be aware of him from his two world title challenges.

Andrzej Fonfara Stops Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Andrzej Fonfara Stops Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Confident and determined, Andrzej “The Polish Prince” Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) spoiled the ring return of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) in resounding fashion Saturday night, flooring the former middleweight champion one time en route to a one-sided ninth-round TKO in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIME.

Fonfara, of Chicago by way of Radon, Poland, dropped Chavez, of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, with a wide left hook 50 seconds into the ninth round before a boisterous crowd of 8,636 predominately-Chavez fans at StubHub Center. It was the first time in 52 professional fights that Chavez had hit the canvas from a punch.

Fonfara destroys Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Fonfara destroys Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s career took a major hit tonight with him getting stopped at the end of the 9th round by the big punching light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Fighting at a catch-weight of 172 pounds, Chavez Jr. was shockingly dropped the 9th round by Fonfara. Chavez Jr. was really hurt to the extent that he wasn’t going to be able to recover after the round ended. In between rounds, Chavez Jr. quit on his stool instead of coming out for the 10th and taking more punishment.

Fonfara was deducted a point in the 7th for the use of his shoulder. It was kind of a petty foul to be called by the referee Jerry Cantu, but thankfully the point deduction didn’t have any effect on the result of the fight.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in must win situation on 18th April

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in must win situation on 18th April

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was once a top contender, and even a good champion. In 2011, he won his 43rd contest and captured the WBC world middleweight title from the previously unbeaten Sebastian Zbik. He would then make 3 consecutive defences before taking on Sergio Martinez, and losing.

In the fight with Martinez he went in with a record of 46-0-1 but was really dominated in the fight. Martinez was simply the better man in every department and the only thing that went Chavez Jr’s was a knockdown in the twelfth round.

Froch still on course to face Chavez Jr

Froch still on course to face Chavez Jr

Rob McCracken, the trainer for IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs), says that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) is still a target for them for their next fight. McCracken says that they’re in talks with Chavez Jr for a fight. This is news because Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum recently said that there is no Chavez Jr-Froch fight.

This means that if Froch’s promoter is having talks with Chavez Jr about a fight, then they’re doing it without Arum’s Top Rank company being part of the talks. If Arum and Top Rank aren’t going to be involved then it’s unknown if a fight between Chavez Jr and Froch can take place.

TERENCE CRAWFORD

Despite a somewhat uneventful 2014 in the sport, the one golden talent which served as a silver-lining with platinum potential was Omaha, Nebraska’s Terrance Crawford. Coming into the year few knew his name. By the time it ended, few could forget it! The emergence of Terence Crawford onto the scene has been a breath of fresh air. Carl Froch vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr close to being finalized for 3/28

Carl Froch vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr close to being finalized for 3/28

IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch is on the verge of getting his dream fight against former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on March 28th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight is close to being finalized, according to the Express.co.uk. Froch, 37, will have his two titles on the line for the fight unless Chavez Jr has problems making weight, which is a distinct possibility given his recent track record.

Out of all the fighters that Froch could have selected for the fight, he chose Chavez Jr despite the fact that he’s not a belt holder at super middleweight and he’s never actually fought a true 168 pound fighter from the division. This will be Chavez Jr’s first fight against a real super middleweight.
