‘Money’ Mayweather plans to stage a show that will be headlined by Londoner Ashley Theophane.
The world’s number one boxer made his revelation ahead of Saturday’s megamatch against WBA Super and WBC light-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas that is being televised live and exclusive in the UK on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

2013 has been a really good year for boxing. The boxing world has seen Fight of the Year candidates, upsets and stellar performances. Although the year has about only one quarter left, fight fans have much to look forward to. Typically the icing on the cake, the cherry on top, the best for last…whatever you’d like to call it…comes towards the end. As fight fans and enthusiasts, we don’t have to wait until the end of the year. The must-see show of the year is happening in less than a week: The One.
Earlier this Tuesday, the MGM Grand’s lobby was packed with fans and the media to commence the week’s festivities for the year’s biggest boxing event. All of the fighters from the televised Showtime PPV event made their grand welcoming in front of screaming and passionate fans.

(Sept. 10, 2013) – Eight-time, five-division World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Super Welterweight World Champion and Mexican Superstar Canelo Alvarez kicked off fight week for “THE ONE: MAYWEATHER vs. CANELO” as the two superstars arrived in grand fashion in front of approximately 2,000 screaming fans on Tuesday at the MGM Grand Hotel Lobby.
Canelo’s WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Championships and Mayweather’s WBA Super Welterweight Super World Championship will be at stake this Saturday on SHOWTIME PPV in the most significant boxing showdown in recent memory.
WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward doesn’t see any way for the WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr/. (44-0, 26 KO’s) this Saturday night other than maybe getting lucky by landing a big shot that knocks out Mayweather. Ward doesn’t think that there’s any possibility that Canelo can out-box the much faster and much better skilled Mayweather Jr. over 12 rounds.
Ward also thinks that the weight that the 170+ Canelo will be taking off to get down to the 152 lb. catch-weight could lead to Canelo running out of gas in the later rounds of the fight.
This past Friday, September 6th, current WBA/WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez participated in the WBC’s mandatory seven day, pre-fight weigh in and surprised the scrutinizing boxing media by scaling in at an impressive 157.4 pounds.
With only 5.4 pounds left to drop before the big Friday the 13th weigh-in ceremony, which is slated to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, at 3PM PST, most speculating fight scribes believe that Canelo will have very little trouble making the negotiated catch weight of 152 pounds.
Former Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight contender “Iceman” John Scully insists that Canelo’s road to the scale will be anything but easy.
“The week of the fight will be misery for Canelo,” claims the prolific fight trainer. “I’m talking misery. He is going to experience one of the most miserable weeks of his life…that’s a guarantee.
Maybe Oscar De La Hoya has got it wrong, and his close (in the opinion of some, not in the opinion of many others) but losing fight with superstar Floyd Mayweather is not the real example of a blueprint on how to defeat the 44-0 master. Maybe – and it’s testament to Floyd’s greatness that we have to clutch at straws in such a way – we have to go back to the night of April of 2002, and Mayweather’s tough, close and gruelling encounter with Mexican warrior Jose Luis Castillo to find anything approaching a genuine blueprint on how to beat him.
It’s certainly interesting that Mexican fighters have given Mayweather his toughest tests (Castillo and Mexican/American De La Hoya being right at the top of the short list) and maybe Saul Canelo Alvarez will have studied both fights in his preparations for “The One,” which is now just days away.

De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions have put together Saturday’s £150 million Las Vegas scrap when Mayweather challenges WBA super and WBC light-middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
The financial records set when De la Hoya was outpointed by Mayweather in 2007 will be shattered in the fight being screened live in the UK on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
De la Hoya, the GBP President has never been close to Mayweather despite his organisation’s involvement in making him the world’s highest earning sportsman in 2012 and almost certainly this year.

Boxing is a sports-based show business and the sporting element very often gets sandbagged by mercurial agendas. Boxing like any other sport is an instrument of politics and as such it has its own internal politics as well. Those who know the ropes earn decently win or lose. Other very talented people who are stuck with the wrong management can waste their best years outside “the mix”.
This is not the case with Floyd Mayweather and Saul Alvarez who have achieved iconic political status and have been spared from the adverse effects of stringent judging in some instances.
“The One” will probably be elected by the judges unless they score it as a draw in which case there will be “The Two” with an ensuing second fight.
