Saul Alvarez vs. Floyd Mayweather – style, weight and age issues
September 14 is near and “The One” will stand out hopefully without controversy. I am not sure who will be favored by the politics if it comes to that. Floyd was never a KO artist and after moving up in weight he did not bring his punch with him. Saul Alvarez knocking out Floyd Mayweather is not a scenario that pundits would even consider although „Canelo“ seems to hit hard enough. The outcome will probably depend on the judges.
There are labels for matching up different styles like “a boxer vs. a puncher“, “a stylist vs. a brawler“, if I had to label the fight I’d say “a boxer vs. a fighter” but there would be a lot of “fine print“ under that label.
Floyd Mayweather‘s style is unconventional for the pro ranks as it is fundamentally based on the Olympic/amateur boxing style. His amateur boxing skills have been optimized and modified for prize fighting.
Award Winning Artist Commissioned to Create Artwork for Mayweather vs Canelo Superfight!
“The One” prefight painting by Richard T. Slone, the second of three in the series.
LAS VEGAS (Aug 21, 2013) – Multi-award winning artist Richard T. Slone, known by fight fans around the globe for his unique style and ability to capture the true essence of the sweet science with each brush stroke, has been commissioned to create the official artwork for the upcoming Superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, which will take place on Saturday Sept 14, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.
Slone will be ringside at the fight to complete his series of official paintings and will also be hosting an exhibit of his works at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 12-15th. “Having Richard T. Slone creating unique artwork for this fight is a thrill and an honor for us at Golden Boy Promotions,” said company CEO Richard Schaefer.
Mayweather Jr. When Asked About Pacquiao: “He’s not going to get a chance to fight me”
“How are things today? He’s not going to get a chance to fight me. I was feeling that way weeks ago. Now, I’m feeling like I wouldn’t even give him a chance. He had a chance, he blew it, so that’s what it is,” said Mayweather Jr. in a recent interview with MLive.com when talking about a possibility of him facing Pacquiao.
Mayweather Jr. is running out of formidable fan-approved opponents, who will he fight when there is no one left?
Mayweather Jr. has the tendency to contract himself at times, as we have heard him say that he will fight him just to turn around and say that he is not interested in that fight. Still, I have always hoped, and still do, that these two will fight when the time is right and the money is on the table.
Mayweather Jr. at 150.3 lbs; Canelo 166.8 lbs. 30-day weigh-in
WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) was supposed to becoming to September 14th fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) a lot lighter than he did in his previous fight against Austin Trout where Canelo weighed in at 172 lbs. the night of the fight, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen judging by the mandatory 30-day weigh-in held on Wednesday.

Floyd Mayweather and Danny Garcia featured on Golden Boy Classics Fox Deportes broadcast on August 15
LOS ANGELES, August 14 – It’s a double shot of “Golden Boy Classics” on Thursday, August 15, as the countdown to “THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO” continues on FOX Deportes with two memorable battles from the careers of Floyd “Money” Mayweather and Danny “Swift” Garcia.
In the opener at 9:00 p.m. ET, Garcia proves that he’s ready for the best in the business when he takes on former world champion Kendall Holt in a 2011 matchup. Then it’s the main event at 10:00 p.m., as two of the best of this era, Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto, square off in a quest for 154-pound supremacy.
Superior against anyone and everyone put in front of him for years, Floyd Mayweather’s boxing dominance was internationally recognized. But on May 5, 2012, “Money” gave the fans an even more impressive show as he stood and traded with hard-hitting Puerto Rican icon Miguel Cotto, pounding out a 12 round unanimous decision that proved Mayweather’s ability to do it all in the ring once again.
Left- Hook Lounge: Deontay Wilder, Garcia/Matthysse, & Mayweather/Canelo!!!
Art N. (Los Angeles, CA): On your Facebook page you spoke about Deontay Wilder and how KO artist should perhaps not get so much early praise. Do you think he has a shot to be the next best American Heavyweight?
Vivek W. (ESB): Deontay Wilder has become a hot topic! How hot? On Yahoo! this weekend he was ranked #7 on the global trending report. As interesting as that may be, my point in the FaceBook post was that I approach him like I do any other heavy handed puncher in the sport. I enjoy the KO’s and the process of seeing the fighter rack them up! But when the rubber hits the road, it all comes down to whether or not that puncher has the ability to deal with an opponent who has the power to hurt them, the stamina to outwork them, and chin to outlast them. That’s when it all gets “real” inside the ring! Many of you who followed the fight game before Tyson went wild and Pacquiao brought “good guy” back in style know full well that power without those other elements mean very little.
Floyd Mayweather is not Chicken!
Manny misspoke when he said Floyd Mayweather, Jr. runs, which implies he’s chicken. No one really buys that. However, they do go along with the idea that Floyd is guilty of same thing as Wladimir Klitschko. Hall of Famer Larry Merchant explained it best when he corrected someone for calling bouts – boxing. Larry quickly explained, in no uncertain terms, that that is not what people pay to see. According to Larry, they’re paying to see prize fighting, with emphasis on fighting.
Floyd has been boxing since he got out of diapers. His father and uncles were either boxing or training/coaching others how to box before Little Money was born. It’s a safe bet to say Small Change was boxing while still in his crib. He doesn’t know anything else. Boxing has been his life. If he was a chicken, there’s no way he could have carried on the family’s tradition.
