Mayweather looks like he’ll be facing Khan next

Floyd Mayweather Jr. will likely be disappointing boxing fans by announcing that his next fight on May 3rd will be Amir Khan within the week. ESPN’s Brian Campbell is saying that it appears that Khan will be the guy that Mayweather Jr. will be facing next instead of Marcos Maidana or Danny Garcia.

Campbell is well aware that this will be a controversial pick due to Khan’s defeats to Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson, but that won’t matter. Mayweather will be choosing him any way.

“Unless Money May has a secret plan he has yet to be leaked in any fashion or any way, Khan, all signs point to him as the next opponent for him,” Campbell said to ESPN. “He’s somewhat of a controversial pick if it ends up being him because, although very talented, Khan is coming off of a pair of losses in recent memory and he’s bounced back with two comeback fights. But really he’s not shown that he’s in his top form…So it’s really Khan or nothing at this point.”

Kelvin Y. (Atlanta, GA): It was recently reported that Adrien Broner secured his option to take an immediate rematch against Marcos Maidana. What are your thoughts about his chances of winning the rematch and what a win or loss would do for him in the aftermath?

Vivek W. (ESB): A few weeks ago when Broner was humbled by Maidana, I felt at the time that his best move would be to go down to 140lbs and allow himself to slowly develop into the welterweight division. There’s a huge misconception that just because a fighter walks around at a weight, he can fight at that weight. Broner learned the reality behind this flawed train of thought quickly in the first round when he realized he was standing across from a man who could hurt him that he didn’t have as much ability to hurt in return. I expect the rematch to be very interesting, but unlike many, I don’t know that I really see a different outcome in the end. The biggest issues I saw with Broner in the fight were his inability to adapt, his limited head movement, and what I also perceived to be a conditioning issue.

Pacquiao doubts Mayweather wants to fight him

Manny Pacquiao has reached the point where he now suspects that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not serious about ever fighting him. Pacquiao notes that Mayweather Jr. has been asking him to agree to an ever increasing amount of things before he’ll agree to fight him. It was originally drug testing, but now Mayweather wants him to leave his promoter Bob Arum before he’ll think about fighting him.

The thing is there’s no guarantee that Mayweather will actually fight Pacquiao even if he does leave Arum. That would put Pacquiao in a situation where he could wind up leaving Arum for no reason if Mayweather decides he still doesn’t want to fight him.

Mayweather Sr: Amir Khan’s got a glass jaw

Floyd Mayweather Sr. has zero worries about whether his son Floyd Jr. can successfully defeat Amir Khan and Marcos Maidana if he faces either one of them next on May 3rd. It’s widely thought that Mayweather will be fighting one of these two fighters next at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, but Mayweather Sr. doesn’t see either of them as giving Floyd Jr. a competitive fight.

“Both of them easy. Two easy fights; both of them is easy. Maidana might have punching power, but you still can’t hit what you can’t see,” Mayweather Sr. said to Hustleboss. So that’s going to put Maidana under a tree. Amir Khan’s got a glass jaw. And if you look at it too hard, it’ll shatter.”

Khan will give Mayweather problems, says Jones Jr.

Roy Jones Jr. believes that the tall 5’10” Amir Khan will give Floyd Mayweather Jr. a lot of problems if he’s the one that ends up facing him in his next fight on My 3rd. Jones Jr. thinks that Khan has the boxing skills and the speed to trouble Mayweather if he avoids trying to slug it out. Jones Jr. thinks Khan is a very good fighter when he’s focusing just on boxing his opponents.

Where he gets into trouble is when he goes out looking to punch. Jones Jr. thinks if Khan comes out with the right game plan to just box with Mayweather then the fight will be a tough one for Mayweather.

Showtime’s Espinoza likes Khan-Mayweather fight

Stephen Espinoza, the President of Sports for Showtime, thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s) vs. Amir Khan (28-3, 19 KO’s) on May 3rd would be a good fight for Showtime pay-per-view due to the 27-year-old Khan’s fighting style. While Espinoza still isn’t saying that he specifically prefers Khan to Marcos Maidana as Mayweather Jr’s next opponent, he does seem to be dropping an awfully big hint by praising Khan’s fighting at length in an interview with ESPN from today.

“Who will be most entertaining once the bell rings? Espinoza said to ESPN. “That’s the way we will evaluate the May fight and every fight after that. I like the Khan fight stylistically. I think Amir provides a set of challenges based on his skills that Floyd hasn’t seen in a while. For that reason, I think it will be a very entertaining fight.”

Superstar Manny Pacquiao was speaking on the radio in his native Manila last night, talking with The Manila Times via DZAR Sunshine Radio, and the southpaw dynamo launched the most aggressive verbal assault yet on would-be ring rival Floyd Mayweather Junior.

Usually, Pacquiao is a reserved individual, refusing to speak negatively about any of his opponents, past, present or future – yet yesterday, possibly as a result of Mayweather’s recent and childishly delivered insults at his expense, Pac-Man gave Mayweather some of his own medicine.

“[Mayweather] is just a coward, insecure and envious of my accomplishments,” Pacquiao said. “I don’t like to bite [at] his gimmicks and I just want to understand him, although it’s too much. But I’m really thankful that he remembers me in some ways.”

Roach: Showtime/CBS will make Mayweather fight Pacquiao

Trainer Freddie Roach is thinking that Floyd Mayweather Jr. will be making a mistake if he fights Amir Khan next, because he sees that as a fight that will lose money for Showtime/CBS. Roach believes that Mayweather needs to maximize the money he makes with his last 4 fights on his Showtime/CBS contract, and the way to do that is to fight Manny Pacquiao.

“Showtime/CBS is in the business to make money,” Roach said to Radio Raheem. “They want fights like Pacquiao-Mayweather to be profitable. I think they need to make that fight happen. I think they will make Mayweather make that fight. We’ve accepted everything with the drug testing, so I don’t think there’s any more excuses for him not to fight us.”

Mayweather: Pacquiao is now begging for the fight

With Manny Pacquiao’s pay-per-view numbers dropping off badly in his last fight, and with him having lost 2 out of his last 3 fights, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is now gloating about it and seemingly kicking him while he’s down. Mayweather sees Pacquiao in a situation where he needs his help in order to get him out of the hole he’s been put in. But Mayweather says he’s not going to do it. He’s not going to bail Pacquiao out with his IRS problems, or with his problems with his PPV numbers tanking all of a sudden. Mayweather feels that Pacquiao has to deal with these issues on his own without his help.

“Pacquiao missed his opportunity; he had his chance,” Mayweather told Fighthype. “He felt like he was on the same level as me. He wouldn’t have asked for 50-50. So now, two losses later and he’s got a problem.

Will Arum free Pacquiao so he can fight Mayweather?

Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer Franklin Gacal Jr. thinks Bob Arum of Top Rank should be a good one and free Manny Pacquiao up from the remainder of his contract with Top Rank so that Pacquiao can fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a history-making bout in 2014. Pacquiao is still under contract with Arum for the whole of 2014, and as long as he’s with him, Mayweather will not agree to fight Pacquiao.

Would Arum agree to let Pacquiao leave Top Rank for the good of Pacquiao? There’s no question that a Mayweather fight would be a big boost for Pacquiao’s career right now. He’s lost 2 out of his last 3 fights, his last fight against Arum’s fighter Brandon Rios was disappointment in bringing in only 475,000 pay-perv-view buys. Arum says fans weren’t interested because the fight took place in Macao, China instead of the United States. Getting beaten in back to back fights probably didn’t help Manny any.
