David Haye: The Boy Who Cried Wolf ? / Promising a Comeback Yet AGAIN!

It’s been over three years since former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye last stepped between the ropes and knocked out Dereck Chisora in 5 rounds at a rain soaked Upton Park, and ever since that time fans have been more used to seeing ‘The Hayemaker’ popping up on reality television, or proffering himself as the first black James Bond, than duking it out in a boxing ring.

After twice signing, and twice pulling out of fighting Tyson Fury, then retiring citing a shoulder injury, we have been promised numerous times that Haye would be returning at some point, and in true “boy who cried wolf” fashion, it seems the fans grew weary of his empty promises and moved on.

After David Haye twice signed to fight Tyson Fury and twice pulled out on him in 2013, citing injury, it left the giant Mancunian high and dry. Having put himself through two costly training camps ostensibly for nothing , Fury was left certain of one thing. NEVER would he deal with David Haye again.

Three years ago was the last time Haye stepped between the ropes at a rain soaked Upton Park, knocking out Dereck Chisora in 5 rounds – it followed their notorious brawl at the post-fight presser for Chisora’s challenge against Vitali Klitschko – and ever since that day, Haye has been popping up here and there on various quiz shows and reality TV programme’s, seemingly in an attempt to keep his name in the limelight.

The soon-to-go-to purse bids clash between long reigning lineal heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and mandatory challenger Tyson Fury, is set to be one of the biggest heavyweight clashes involving a British fighter since David Haye’s own ill-fated Wladimir challenge and trip to Hamburg 4 years ago – which resulted in the now infamous and oft ridiculed “Toe-Gate” saga in which Haye displayed his injured little toe to the world as “evidence” of his poor performance immediately after the fight.

The fact of the matter remains that like so many before him, Haye came up short against “Dr.Steelhammer” – yet ahead of Fury’s attempt at dethroning the younger Klitschko brother, he has seen fit to speak out and scotch the giant Mancunian’s chances – going so far in ‘The Sun’ as to suggest the fight won’t even take place – saying he’ll be “very surprised” to see Fury actually get in the ring to fight the Ukrainian champion.

Standing 6 foot 6 inches and tipping the scales for his last fight at a ripped 248 1/2 pounds, the sight of Anthony Joshua is surely not what any boxer wants in the opposite corner when that first bell rings.

After just over a year and a half as a professional, the reigning Olympic super heavyweight champion from Watford has torn through thirteen opponents – all by stoppage. The normally durable American, Kevin Johnson, was recently hammered through the ropes in the first round, somehow surviving a couple more minutes before the referee had seen enough. No opponent has made it to the fourth round.

On last night’s ‘Rule Britannia’ show from London – in which the British world title challengers enjoyed mixed fortunes – gold medal winning Olympian Anthony Joshua (13-0 , 13ko) absolutely destroyed American challenger Kevin Johnson inside 2 rounds to send shock-waves up the rankings and further put the division on notice regarding his arrival as a serious player.

Johnson – who had been sold as having never been stopped – was expected to give Joshua at least a few rounds, promising he would deliver and be the Brit fighters biggest test to date. And on paper – he was.

David Haye Arrested Over £341,000 “Bounced Cheque”

British former unified cruiserweight and WBA heavyweight champion David Haye has been arrested in the Islamic state of Dubai over claims a £341,000 cheque for a property he is building bounced.

Numerous media outlets in the UK are reporting that the “Hayemaker” has had his passport seized, which would explain his no-show at a BAMMA MMA event at the weekend. 168lb Super Middleweight champion Carl Froch filled in instead.

Former two division world champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KOs) says his surgically repaired right shoulder is strong and he’s punching harder than ever. Haye, now 34, says he’ll be returning to the ring in 2015 to start his comeback to try and get a title shot against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

Haye lost his WBA title to Wladimir three years ago in 2011 in a one-sided fight. Haye looked too small for the 6’6”, 245 pound Wladimir, and the fight ended up being totally one-sided. At 6’3”, 210 pounds, Haye is more of a cruiserweight sized heavyweight than an actual heavyweight.

Remember when heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko called out David Haye in a YouTube video? You remember David Haye, right? He was the polite-sounding, trash-talking, loud-mouth, who was packing a glass toe, and literally talked himself into the heavyweight spotlight without really doing much of anything to actually earn it. Sure, Haye picked up an ABC strap when he squeaked by Nikolai Valuev with an uneventful majority decision victory over the faded aging behemoth. But even before that happened, Haye had already talked himself into title contention by using nothing more than his big loud mouth. It was brilliant! An amazing demonstration of successful self-promotion, the likes of which hasn’t been matched by any other boxer in recent years. And it worked too, even if he did bail out of fights with each Klitschko brother before targeting easier prey in Valuev, for his silly alphabet title trinket that few true fight fans even recognized. It was genius on the part of Haye.

Khan deserves the Mayweather fight, says Haye

David Haye feels that Amir Khan’s victories over Luis Collazo, Julio Diaz and Carlos Molina are the right stuff to get him a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in late 2014 or in 2015. Haye believes that the way that Khan beat those three fighters was more than enough to show that he deserves to be in the same ring with Mayweather. Haye also has Khan rated as the number 2 welterweight in the division behind only Mayweather, and he sees Khan as being capable of defeating Manny Pacquiao right now.

“I think Khan deserves a fight against Mayweather. Maidana gave Mayweather a hell of a fight,” Haye said. “Khan smashed him [Maidana] before, put him down and dominated him. If anybody can beat Mayweather, its Amir Khan…He put him [Collazo] down multiple times, and he dominated him. That was a performance for me to say he is the best fighter on the planet behind Mayweather.”

It is my provocative to produce a debate on the current status for each division within boxing. In some divisions it is quite clear who is number one but who takes the best punch and who gives it?

In some cases the best fight out there might not be because it produces clarity on a linear champion but rather be a barnstormer of a fight. Here is my take on the state of the game.
