They weren’t even originally scheduled to face each other on that fateful day. Originally Klitschko was slated to face Cedric Boswell on the undercard of a showcase event featuring world champion Lennox Lewis, who was supposed to go up against challenger Kirk Johnson.

Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) successfully defended his WBO junior lightweight championship belt when he dominated Nicholas Walters (26-1-1, 21 KOs) en route to a 7th round stoppage victory. Many boxing observers expected this to be a competitive contest between two elite boxers from this weight range. What transpired, however, was something completely different. Lomachenko made things look easy in there. Between the 7th and 8th rounds, Walters had informed referee Tony Weeks that he did not wish to continue. This ending left many fans disappointed, but the end result is that Lomachenko dominated and he looked sensational doing so.

There is always reason for concern whenever a big boxing mega event hinges on one or both fighters needing to win a tune-up match prior to the big showdown. An example of this would be when Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins were scheduled to have a rematch, as long as they both were victorious in matches leading up to the desired attraction. Hopkins defeated Enrique Ornelas, but Roy Jones was knocked out in a round by Danny Green. The rematch went on, but lost its luster.
