Middleweight sensation Gennady Golovkin continued his reign of dominance when he stopped a brave but overmatched Kell Brook in the 5th round this past weekend. With the victory Golovkin now has 17 successful title defense, and is riding an impressive streak of 23 consecutive victories coming by way of knockout. During this mighty run Golovkin has hardly lost any rounds along the way. He has been extremely dominant while consistently displaying an extremely crowd pleasing and fan friendly fighting style.
A lot of observers criticized Brook as Golovkin’s most recent choice of opponent. After all, Brook was a welterweight. He had never previously done anything of note at 160 or 154, and even at 147 he hardly shined the brightest. Even if he was the best welterweight in the world, he never proved this. So since Golovkin had been dominating middleweights with relative ease, many members of the boxing community viewed this as a mismatch for the smaller and largely unproven Kell Brook.
But Brook wound up making a fairly decent account of himself, even arguably winning a couple of rounds along the way where he was outboxing and outslicking Golovkin, who at moments seemed uncharacteristically confused and befuddled. But despite Brook’s glimpses of success, he was ultimately overpowered by Golovkin’s superior devastating power. Brook’s corner tossed the towel into the ring during the 5th round, which was a wise decision given it was soon after revealed that Brook had suffered a serious injury to his orbital bone.
Since this fight had a lot of people excited that a foe can even have the briefest of moments of success, it just goes to show that Brook was able to push Golovkin a little bit harder than most of his previous opponents. But even Brook – who was viewed as having more success than most – was ultimately overwhelmed by the impressive power and delivery of Triple G. So this begs the question, is there anyone – anyone at all south of 168 – who can truly test Gennady Golovkin in a competitive affair where Golovkin is forced to dig down deep and show us whether or not he has another dimension to his game when faced with a real challenge?
