There is always reason for concern whenever a big boxing mega event hinges on one or both fighters needing to win a tune-up match prior to the big showdown. An example of this would be when Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins were scheduled to have a rematch, as long as they both were victorious in matches leading up to the desired attraction. Hopkins defeated Enrique Ornelas, but Roy Jones was knocked out in a round by Danny Green. The rematch went on, but lost its luster.

Another similar situation happened when Carlos Baldomir upset Zab Judah in the lead up to his showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. In both of these instances, the big fights lost a lot of their luster. Fortunately for boxing fans, no such setbacks arose in the case of the highly anticipated showdown between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward.

Andre Ward took care of business this past weekend when he defeated Alexander Brand by lopsided decision. Sergey Kovalev has already taken care of business a month earlier when he defeated Isaac Chilemba by a lopsided decision of his own. With both fighters winning in dominant fashion, all signs are a go towards the ultimate boxing clash that will feature Kovalev and Ward. The winner of the fight between Kovalev and Ward will undoubtedly provide the boxing world with a new undisputed pound for pound king to replace the void that was left when Floyd Mayweather retired last year.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner provides an early examination into the intriguing showdown that boxing fans have to look forward this November. What is the main key to victory for each boxer? And how did their final preparation bouts going into the big prize fight work out for Kovalev and Ward in their respective bouts against Chilemba and Brand?
