Rich.. Watch Khans losses and the Gomez and Limmond fights. The guy does’nt give himself a chance to recover.

Posted October 7, 2012 5:45 pm

Referees don’t look for excuses to stop fights…They stop it on merit

Posted October 7, 2012 3:01 pm

Lefthook…Good points there….Regarding getting counted out if your up at 9 reminds me of the Ali/Foreman fight he was off the floor at 9 but got waved off…

Posted October 7, 2012 2:42 pm

Tark.. No theres 2 in your corner m8, one of thems watching the count n the others watching you telling you when to rise. Oh and you def dont want to be rising at 9 m8, you’d be counted out. Contarary to what most fans think, you have to be up for 8 or they’ll count you out on the rise

Posted October 7, 2012 10:02 am

I still say you watch the referee… Your corner will distract you and you can’t absorb sign language for them and focus on the referee’s count at the same time… The referee can stop the fight so you focus your attention on him and get up at nine if you’re hurt… He’ll still make you walk to him etc. If you’re looking around for your corner the ref might say your eyes were darting and grab an excuse to stop it.

Posted October 6, 2012 8:38 pm

Tark… The point i was making is Khan tries to jump back up on rubber legs. Thats not the way it used to be taught, you stay down and try to recover, not run around like bambi on ice. You catch my drift??

Posted October 5, 2012 7:31 pm

Tark.. You take a knee if your dropped heavy. What you think i’m saying you take a knee for the sake of it. As for watching the ref thats the corners job n they signal you to get up n at thge same time there signaling advice. Was that way when i was in there mate, i can assure you of that. Not that i was ever on my ass… lol

Posted October 5, 2012 7:28 pm

Fighters rarely take knees. I’ts an automatic point, which usually leads to a 2-point round against you … And if you do take a knee you don’t watch your corner. You watch the referee because you need to get his count exactly right …. But opponents love it when you take a knee. If they can force you to take one knee, why not another??? They know you’re flagging.

Posted October 5, 2012 2:37 pm

Tell you what i;ve never seen is Khan taking a knee, the most basic and one of the first things your taught. Take a knee n watch the corner and they tell you when to get up, the corner not the ref or any other. A blind man can see its a major problem, he’s steaggering around when he should be on a fcin knee

Well Khan is one of the few modern day fighters to come back from a crushing defeat as in the Prescot fight witch takes a lot of courage, so i’d say he’ll be back again stronger than ever. Nothing wrong with his heart n balls.

a quick search armstrong had 181 fights, prob 70 or 80 at 25, anyway less of the crap comparing khan to armstrong you dummy

Henry Armstrong had 8 losses at age 25. Homicide Hank was knocked cold in his 1st fight. Dropped like a block of ice, right on his face … He was very tough to discourage–he fought his 2nd pro fight 4 days later.

Posted October 4, 2012 1:51 pm

another thing he has lost 3 times, and is only 25,

Posted October 4, 2012 12:09 pm

so whats your point he was hyped beyond belief, got a massive contract out of the amatuers, was giving loads of air time, and he has failed to be the super star he was meant to be, he has lost 3 times without even sharing the ring with pac, mayweather, bradley, and plenty of other fighters who would beat him, he cant follow a game plan , he has no chin, and to be honest im sick of him, but you could tell that haha

Posted October 4, 2012 12:06 pm

Neil (pomy)

Khan will always have a dodgey chin …. he just needs to develop a style that doesnt expose his weaknesses. Haters will hate and fanboys will always go over-the-top in their praise. Anyone who thinks Khan is rubbish are just as brain-dead as those that thought he was the second coming of Ray Robinson.

Posted October 4, 2012 11:42 am

Neil (pomy)

Some people really dont know what they are talking about. Khan is a very good boxer that has been beaten 3 times. Nobody is hyped unless you happen to think they were the next Sugar Ray Robinson. Good boxers get beat …… Thomas Hearns got beat a few times …. knocked out even by boxers not on his level …. this didnt make Hearns rubbish, or a “hype-job”. Every fighter is beatable and every fighter has weaknesses ….. Khans weakness (and he has many) are the fact that he boxes with an amatuer mentality, his chin isnt tough and he doesnt use his brain in the ring ….. he is still one hell of a boxer regardless of his obvious weaknesses. Sometimes it really does seem there is a severe lack of brain-cells among boxing fans …. they just go from one extreme to the other. Good boxers get beat – this is a fact of the sport.

Posted October 4, 2012 11:39 am

just heard khan on sky sports, the man is a clown, deluded, he is probably the biggest hype job ever, been exposed 3 times now how many more will it take to get this money greedy prat off the tv

Tark you said a million words in one sentence.

Posted October 4, 2012 11:04 am

You’re going to get conflicting stories from both parties when a potential multi-million dollar fighter ditches his trainer. The real story is Khan wasn’t rounding out his game with Roach. Unless he’s a mentally weak putz who doesn’t give a damn about his future, he’s going to start searching for a better situation for himself. The good part comes some time in the future if he faces one of Roach’s fighters and flattenes them.

Posted October 4, 2012 9:40 am

Certainly Andre Ward is a helluva fighter but I don’t know how good a trainer Hunter is just yet. What troubles me about Khan is why he left Roach. According to this article Khan began by asking Roach to make him the priority at the Wildcard. When Roach declined THEN Khan moved to Hunter. So did Khan move to learn and develop or because he wanted to be number 1 in the gym? If it’s the former then he has a chance, if not, it’s over!!

Posted October 4, 2012 9:38 am

Chicago guy

Nothing to take away from Hunter as a good trainer like Roach but transformation of Khan to a good fighter is in him itself. Trainer can’t help if his fighter don’t listen.

Posted October 4, 2012 7:53 am

He’s made the best choice of trainer he could, taking into consideration the time Hunter will spend with him. Andre Ward is a fine athlete, made our own Carl Froch look silly, and he’s just getting better. But I do not like Amir Khan, the man is ignorant, and seems to blame alot of people for his own lack of skill. He also had a temperament problem. As a kid he’d get into trouble with the police, speeding, endargerment and reckless driving. So at least he doesn’t engage in that anymore, possibly because he moved to the states. Will he get knocked out again? i’m not sure, and he has the best chance he could have to be a great. But there’s alot of people in the UK who are hoping that he’ll fail. And alot of those are from Khan’s, and my hometown of Bolton.

A mere Con is a pretty quick, fast, athletic fighter, I’ll give him that..some fans tend to get impress the way Khan flaunts that talent in the ring, it makes him look flashy, flamboyant wich is fun to watch but his style is still at an amateur level..alot of fans think Khan’s liabilities are in the defensive department but the truth is these kid has alot of holes in his overall game..hopefully for his (Con) sake Virgil Hunter can teach Amir how to box smart or he’ll be finding himself not only doing the latest vesion of the chicken dance but wrapping up the scraps of what’s left of his career and taking them home to mommy and daddy.

that explains why he never got kayo’d from el Chino or Peterson.

Posted October 4, 2012 2:20 am

the punches Khan was taking fro el Chino and Peterson were not flush on the “off button” tip of the chin punches, headshot’s yes off switch no, Garcia hit the off button just like Prescott did, right on tip of chin.

if tinkhan had actually listened and implemented roachs advice he would have lasted a few more rounds with garcia but his ego wouldnt allow that now his jumped ship .the other thing with roach is his speech it must be difficult for him to be efficient and to impart his knowledge with his disability ….

Posted October 4, 2012 2:02 am

Khan took a lot of brutal shots from Maidana and Peterson without going down.. Too many in fact.. A leaky defense does destroy your chin over time, not to mention your brain.. Chavez’s defense leaks like a sieve even though he’s got a rock-like chin for now… It’s no coincidence they have the same trainer.

He might,He can’t help khans little chin that’s all i can tell you lol.

Posted October 4, 2012 12:36 am

The problem is Roach has very limited knowledge. He’s fantastic training boxers with finished skills like James Toney and Manny Pacquiao—but when he gets a kid like Khan who has brilliant offensive skills but no inside game, no inside defensive skills, mediocre all around defensive skills, and no clinching skills, he has to keep him away from brawlers—and away from guys with great all around skills who can attack the weak parts of Khan’s game the way Danny Garcia so aptly did. To “keep him away from punchers” like Roach suggests is possible at an intermediate level where you can pick and choose opponents to fit your style. It’s not possible when you’re the world champion and you have to face mandatory challengers and top flight all around fighters … In a loaded division you either learn or you get KTFO.

hopefully Hunter has the ability and versatility to tailor a fight-plan to Khan’s ability. he’s no Andre Ward and shouldn’t be expected to master that degree of ring-smarts and versatility but he does possess some physical advantages that Ward doesn’t have. if i were Hunter, i’d be motivated and excited by the challenge and opportunity to create a completely different but also dominant champion with what Khan brings to the table rather than try and replicate Ward’s success. that’s been Roach’s problem all along. he tries and clone Pacquiao* with every fighter that happens to display some punching power. no matter that their natural advantages in height, reach, speed, and temperatment might be.

Posted October 3, 2012 11:33 pm

I second that.

Posted October 3, 2012 11:25 pm

te tumbo

the primary problem with Roach is that he can not elevate a fighter’s game beyond the physical, which is still pretty impressive. every Roach fighter comes prepared to go 12 solid give-and-take rounds of action but when that fighter is not the most durable, that fight-plan will invariably backfire (e.g., Khan, Linares). IMO, the consisent reality checks is what will finally compel Khan to shed the rock-star persona he so desperately craves and assume the ring-smart maturity he desperately needs. if he’s finally ready to discard the premature KO highlight-reels looping through his head before each fight, he’s always had the talent, tools, and now the hard-earned experience to become the patient and lethal boxer-puncher he should have always been.

I think the fact that Kahn left Roach was a good idea within itself. I do feel like to a lot of degree he could have benefited from someone who could devote more time to him. Roach has a gym full of fighters who he has to share his time with; and we don’t even want to start on the fact that Pacman is the BULK OF HIS INCOME. So with that being said; hopefully Hunter can give this kid the time he needs and if Kahn listens and commits to what is being taught he can turn his career around and be the champion we all know he is capable of being.

Posted October 3, 2012 9:51 pm

Having a bad chin certainly doesn`t help a boxer, but it need not be the end of the world if they can adjust their style. Khan has some other good attributes – he has handspeed, he is athletic, his power isn`t bad when he can land cleanly, he can mix a nice left hook to the body into his combinations, he has heart, and he has a lot of experience at a young age.
The problem is that he gets high on the aspects he does well, and thinks he can be an in and out rythm fighter like Pacquaio. This ends up failing for two reasons – one being that he doesn`t have the stopping power to prevent pressure fighters from coming straight after him (see Maidana and Peterson), and two – he throws large combo’s hoping to find a gap rather than actually creating an opening.
I suspect a decent technical coach could turn Khan into quite a boring, but effective counter-puncher – basically just have him edge rounds through move, set, jab at the body or head then move again, only throwing anything of any significance after drawing the opponent into trying to lead off from too far away, or throwing a lead right and holding (ala Bernard Hopkins) whenever the opponent tries to close aggressively. Some of his comments make me doubt he has the mentality to implement a patient strategy though.

Posted October 3, 2012 9:16 pm

Vigil Hunter can do wonders with this kid if Khan humbles himself and unlearns some of his taught habits that leave him vulnerable. Khan needs to shut up and learn. He’s at a beginners stage right about now and he needs to recognize this fact! But for the record as far as I can see, the potential is definitely there, King Kahn can turn into one deadly weapon if he listens and learns! He CAN be a King after all.

For someone who can’t stand the man you are consumed by him in every post you put up. You are infatuated with Andre ward. You hate him for exposing your weak defeated euro fighters(Kessler,Abraham, froch,)but you love the pain he causes you. It is beyond sadistic my man. You are really starting to associate all the pain and misery ward has caused you with a orgasmic feeling. It’s like women who fall in love with mass murderers. And you don’t see it which proves that you have fantasies of ward beating up your beloved euro’s. Then your alter ego kicks in and you pretend to despise what you truly love and admire. Do you have pictures of ward in your house man??are they in your bedroom??your shower?? Do you watch his fights over and over?? Is ward in your dinner conversation?? Do you discuss him while you are in the bed with your wife?? Watch it gonzo and let me give you a bit of advice son. Get help while you can before you come to the states and began stalking him. Virgil Hunter has the ability and experience to mold a talented young boxer into a sound and steady champion provided that that young boxer dosen`t have any major weaknesses like Khan. Khan has heart and he is plenty talented enough however his glass chin is a disaster. And that is going to eventually kill any chemistry that he would have with Hunter or anyone who trains him.

Posted October 3, 2012 6:24 pm

As for Khan’s next fight, It’s a tried and true strategy to take a few easy fights after a rough defeat. Smart managers have been following this tenet for hundreds of years. After Sugar Ray Robinson was stopped by Joey Maxim, Ray’s next opponent was winless in his previous 4 fights—including 2 devastating KO losses. Ray’s next opponent after that was coming of a 5 fight losing streak but gave Robinson an unexpected one-sided shellacking. Robinson’s next opponent after that won only 5 of his previous 15 fights and SRR barely won a split decision. Despite his unbelievable struggle for several fights against soft opposition, Robinson finally pulled his game together and won the title back 3 more times… There’s hope for Khan after all.

Posted October 3, 2012 6:08 pm

This writer says… “After that loss Khan’s team approached Roach with new terms which included making Khan his TOP priority demoting other Roach fighters including Manny Pacquiao to lower priority to make Khan the TOP dog. To this Roach refused.” ..This is not true, but Roach’s story of events. The truth is Khan wanted to change trainers because he wasn’t having continued success with Roach … and BTW, neither have Chavez or Pacquiao lately.

Posted October 3, 2012 6:07 pm

Khan’s glass jaw is a glowing beacon to any fighter with a decent punch so I’d say NO he cant help.

Posted October 3, 2012 5:51 pm

I think that this is a well-written article by Robert Jackson. But I do not think that Hunter can help Khan and his suspect chin.Khan has a suspect chin like Floyd Patterson. One of the greatest trainers of all-time,Cus D`Amato tried to help Patterson`s suspect chin by developing the ” peek-a-boo ” defense , and trying to keep Patterson away from hard punching Sonny Liston for as long as possible. It was the same high, tight defensive guard that Mike Tyson used in his prime.Muhammad Ali said that Patterson was the most skilled fighter that he ever fought, which is high praise.Unfortunately, the peek-a-boo defense and high level skill that was taught to him by D`Amato wasn`t enough to prevent Patterson`s suspect chin from getting crushed by hard punchers.Patterson developed Alzheimers brain disease from all of the concussive knockdowns and knockouts that he suffered in his career. That is something that Khan should think about.

Khan can’t lose from this pairing. If he improves and starts winning fights (especially if he eventually fights credible opponents again) then it just proves he was the best all along, just like he always thought. If he shows no improvement and still has problems, then it will be Hunter’s fault and he just needs to find another trainer.

Gonzo The Dragonborn

Both Gatti and especially Ward (as in Micky) were certified iron jawed WARRIORS. You’ll not hear a peep out of me saying anything to the contrary regarding the strength of their mandibles. There have been plenty of other granite-jawed American fighters throughout history too: Hagler, Robinson, Marciano, Basilio, Ali, Greb etc. (I could go on if you like?). However, the current crop of American fairies like Ward, Dirrell, Hopkins etc. are either consumed by their pathological fear of pain that they will literally do anything to avoid it, whether it be within the rules or, as in the case of all the aforementioned, routinely outside of the. Surely you must have noticed this too bro? Regarding Andre Ward’s glass mandible, well I think it’s pretty self-explanatory really. I mean I’ve already addressed that in my previous post. His chin is chin has already been exposed at journeyman level by featherfisted part timers and tomato cans.. the only reason why he hasn’t knocked cold yet is because he’s allowed to spend 85% of each fight clamped onto his opponents like an a lonely octopus by clearly corrupt American referees. It’s a very simple equation: If he wasn’t allowed to spend so much time holding he’d get hit way, way more, and if he gets hit way, way more then it will not only greatly increase his chance of losing but it will also drastically increase the chance of his glass jaw getting shattered into 100,000 pieces. But seeing as he ALWAYS has home advantage he’s allowed to get away with all manner of or I’ll burst into tears” tactics, because home ADVANTAGE ensures that he ALWAYS has American referees presiding over his fights doing the utmost to facilitate his path to victory, as he had in ALL of his Super Six fights.

Gonzo The Dragonborn

Shane.. Khan isn’t from the US, silly. He might be based over there but he’s actually from the UK. Although I agree with you about American fighters being gutless and having glass jaws though.. you’d think the industrial amounts of illegal PEDs all their fighters jack up on would imbue them with at least a little bit of courage and help them overcome their pathological fear of getting hit, but alas not I’m afraid. Over here in Europe we breed warriors who actually enjoy taking one to land one of their own. However, across the pond it’s a completely different story. That said, can’t really blame them for all those cowardly tactics they employ to avoid getting hit when they’re packing more glass in their mandibles per square inch than your local bottle bank. Take the Super Six for example.. Even though Europe loses 99.9% of it’s best talent to other sports like football, it was still our guys who were packing all the iron in their mandibles in that tourney: Kessler, Froch, Abraham all of whom are certified granite jawed warriors and are not in the least bit worried about getting hit because they know they come from a place that is renowned for producing real men, whereas all the American fighters like Green, Dirrell, Ward etc. are certified glass jawed fairies who are so utterly consumed by their phobia of being on the receiving end of even the most minuscule amount of punishment that they have zero qualms or shame about resorting to all manner of illegal cowardly tactics to avoid getting hit. You know, backpedaling around the ring in mortal fear of getting clipped by the wind of a punch, grabbing a hold of their opponents for dear life every time their opponent manages to track down their elusive and petrified prey and get themselves into punching range, flopping to the floor like a camp jellyfish, ducking below waist level all the time, crying to the referee when they get hit with a legal punch. etc.

Posted October 3, 2012 3:22 pm

“I’ve always thought that Khan’s biggest problem was his ego, i.e. thinking that he was a better fighter than he really is. Khan was never in Mayweather’s league and sparring with and holding his own against Pacquiao didn’t mean he was as good as Pacquiao either. If Amir Khan can keep his mouth shut and his ears open I think he can learn something…”

You have summed up what we all think of Amir Khan perfectly in that paragraph.

Posted October 3, 2012 2:35 pm

Khan isn’t and never was that good of a fighter. Just overhyped from the land of overhyped glass chinned or gutless fighters. Khan being outboxed by a journeyman and koed easily by 2 journeyman gets 3 times the ink of Froch. Haye who has the smallest jock strap in boxing does too.

Posted October 3, 2012 2:14 pm

Come on people! I don’t care what Khan does or who he gets to train him. A glass jaw is a glass jaw and nothing will help him when he gets hit. There’s nothing special about Khan to begin with. He’s an amateur fighter that is always rushing in, and you can see his punches coming from a mile away. He talks too much and his ego is way too big for him to carry. The guy is a loser that blames everyone but himself. Good for Hunter though, he seems like a cool slick guy that understands the mental part of boxing as well as how to grab, clinch, head butt and get in shape.

Posted October 3, 2012 2:05 pm

This could work. But untill it does or dosent Khan should get less ink and stay in the gym training hard instead of shooting his mouth off.

I have serious concerns about Kahn mental capacity. Garcia is a very good puncher but doesnt have the footwork to get into position so Kahn decides to get into position for him smh. Did he really need Roach to tell him “dont go into Garcias biggest strength”. If he did Hunter cant help him no one can u have to enter the ring with a certain level of intelligent instinct.
