If someone punches you hard enough to break your nose, then jumps on top of you and starts slamming your head into a concrete sidewalk… your life is in danger. I’m not saying it’s moral or right, but based on Florida law GZ had the legal right to stand his ground and defend his life. A few more concrete smashes to his head and he could’ve been killed or disabled for life. Please put yourself in GZ’s situation and consider things from his perspective.

I cant help but think this fight is going to be a bore fest. Mayweather in ultra defensive mode, picking the odd accurate counter shot here and there, with canelo trying to make a fight of the contest but failing to keep up with mayweathers slickness (much like guererro). May weather the matador, canelo the bull.

One guy who accepted Benny’s challenge was Howard Jackson a noted martial arts fighter… Benny’s used hand strikes on Jackson almost excusively — and just completely dominated and outclassed him…

He showcased his boxing skills because Jackson, a karate champion, was talking crap about what he could do to a boxer.. It was a route as Benny knocked Jackson out very easily after boxing him silly.

Canelo will be remembered 30 years from now… Are you kidding? He’s a national hero already… Win or lose, he’s fighting in the biggest and richest fight ever fought… He could retire after the fight at 23 and still be remembered.

However – he has at least 13 to 15 more years to put a bigger stamp on his boxing career… Long after Floyd is retired Canelo will be winning major fights.

Yeah…, Bruce Lee never beat anybody anyone ever heard of… He was a fraud.

Benny the Jet Urquidez is a famed martial artist is one of many who called Lee out… He said he would destroy Lee with little effort.. He said if Lee made it through the 1st round he could keep the entire purse for himself, and he said Lee could put that into the fight contract.

Urquidez is also known for once holding the rare achievement of 6 World Titles in 5 different weight divisions, and remained largely undefeated in his 27 year career. His only loss came in a Muay Thai bout.

…. “Mayweather only takes fights he can win” … That’s BS

Every fight is a risk at this level… Floyd wanted Pac, but major fights like that are fraught with problems.. If Pac agreed to the testing regimen and terms that Super-Fight would be in the history books by now.. As it is – Pacquao only needs to beat Rios and he and Floyd will get it on.

But Canelo is the toughest logical opponent for Floyd… GGG is illogical.

Posted July 13, 2013 2:53 pm

mayweather only takes fights he can win.. the only man who would beat him was pacman 3 years ago why you think he ducked him even matweather father new this to you can only defend certain amount of punch as pacman combos are to much. mayweather for the win by 6 rounds.

Posted July 13, 2013 2:27 pm

GTFOH If he beats Floyd great but its still beating up another little dude there’s a very unfair weight advantage. Canelo still gets smoked by Lara if Golden Girl ever puts him in with Lara.

Posted July 13, 2013 2:17 pm

This pundit remarks…, “I thought Canelo lost to Trout, or at the minimum, he got a draw out of it.”

A draw??? That’s a long way from insisting Trout won every round—which was this pundit’s viewpoint up until now. Maybe he watched the fight again?

Canelo used the Trout fight to sharpen up his defense and long range boxing game against a tall, 171-pound, southpaw master. Floyd isn’t a southpaw, but Trout took away Cotto’s jab. He ripped Miguel with hard right hooks and right jabs, scored with quick left hooks, left uppercuts, and straight left leads. Austin generally flummoxed the Hell out of Cotto and dominated him … Canelo was impressed—and anxious to fight Trout. His team didn’t agree—preferring Cotto… Saul had to overrule the chickenshi*s.

The keys to beat Floyd are the jab and the straight right lead. Saul has to destroy Floyd’s jab and land his own. Saul is so strong and quick he doesn’t need to put any strength on his jab. Feint extremely well and dart the jab in there with extreme smoothness, subtlety, and accuracy like Cotto did. Cotto has a nice stroke. Force Roger to break out the king-sized Q-Tips.

You can’t throw any 1-2’s or double jabs at Floyd. He hits you with a right hand counter every time. Only follow up when you land solidly. Relax like crazy – mentally get into the zone – and focus on feinting and landing single jabs with masterful timing, smoothness, and precision. Floyd’s counters will miss. Floyd doesn’t like to get hit—or lose rounds. Floyd will come after you—like he went after Cotto and Mosley. They were shocked out of their jocks. DON’T BE SHOCKED. Be ready for Floyd when he comes.

That’s when you get deeper into the zone and exchange with cold fury. Floyd is playing your game—so trade punches with him. He’s playing into your strength.

Posted July 13, 2013 2:15 pm

Floyd made a conscious decision to choose the path of least resistance and that’s the primary reason he won’t sit further up the pecking order on the ATG list when he retires.

Posted July 13, 2013 1:18 pm

Floyd’s time will be over as soon as the most lucrative in sports 30 month six fight deal with showtime is over. Not only does this deal make Floyd ridiculously wealthy but it will also be the most significant factor in knocking HBO out of boxing presentation supremacy and will catapault showtime in to the # 1 slot. Oh Floyd has also taken the extremely succesful 24/7 with him. Man even you haters have to give it to Floyd. Not only will he retire as one of the wealthiest athletes the world has ever seen but he will also do it having never tasted defeat.

Posted July 13, 2013 12:55 pm

“If Reynoso means that Canelo have a long reign as the top fighter that beats welterweights while fighting at junior middleweight and rehydrating up to 170+ for his fights, then, yes, I agree with him.”

Yes, only Floyd is perfect. Even God does not hold a candle to the perfection that is Floyd. Oh wait! Juan Manuel Marquez had never fought as a welterweight before he fought Floyd. Plus, Floyd cheated on his weight for that fight! Ricky Hatton was a jr. welterweight who moved up to welterweight to fight Floyd. Now Floyd will be fighting Alvarez at a catchweight! Oh what perfection!

haha seriously the writer should have just said “I hate Canelo”. That would have been enough.

Posted July 13, 2013 9:27 am

At the end of the sixth (was it?) against Trout, Canelo landed uppercut-heavy and you could see in his eyes he thought/knew he had him. But that was about it as far as I remember. The knockdown which followed was nothing special, he was kept at bay by a good jab for most of the fight, and above all Canelo isn’t a one-punch KO artist. Much-lower-opposition fighters have tended to get up and fight on from his big shots so, albeit as I like him as a fighter (especially when he shows shades of Duran), I just don’t see him being close to the same class as Mayweather at this time. As you say though hookoffthejab, who really knows? It’s all just hypotheses at this point but the bookies in the UK have Mayweather about 1/3 and Canelo 3/1. I think that’s about right.

Posted July 13, 2013 8:31 am

I didn’t mean Canelo would use that exact combo to hit Junior…..It was an example of the fact that Floyd is there to be hit …Very infrequently though… Saul has the potential to land meaningful blows on Floyd, and if the right punch lands …..Well who knows eyyy …………

Posted July 13, 2013 8:04 am

hookoffthejab – while Mayweather isn’t gonna be a Nobel laureate unless they come up with a prize for beating people up and making tons of cash out of it (some may call that in itself extremely intelligent), I’m gonna believe that he has that Mosley punch fresh in his mind and he’ll bring all his ring smarts (and he perhaps has more than any active boxer) to the table in the opening rounds to avoid it happening again. Would be nice to see a bit of rope-a-doping from Floyd but my guess is he’ll just use the ring until he dissolves Canelo’s pre-fight ideas and the latter ends up in a situation similar to Hatton. That’s not to say I think he’ll stop Canelo, (and I rate the Cinnamon Man above Hatton) but Canelo will be so far thrown from his game plan by the sixth that he might just end up taking a count through carelessness. Anyway, great that the fight is being made and this is one time I don’t mind Mayweather earning enough to feed Africa. Gonna be a spine-tingler of a ring entrance even if the fight doesn’t live up to the hype.

Posted July 13, 2013 6:50 am

If Mosley was able to land on Junior jab to the body right over the top …Then Saul will have a good chance as well Floyd wont be able to keep Canelo off him in the early rounds , Saul will cover up and walk thru 1or2 too land on Junior ..It isn’t as easy as that though……….Canelo could do it his strength and size will make it easier too ………..

Posted July 13, 2013 6:45 am

All said and done, Canelo is a worthy opponent. FM is the obvious favorite, but maybe, he is just due to be beat.

Posted July 13, 2013 6:39 am

Golovkin has it right. Canelo landing that 2nd-round Mosely punch might be the start of a new era but chances of him landing it are slim and even then Mayweather would probably take the shot. Gonna be a lopsided points win for a guy whom I dislike as a person but hope goes on to check out at 50 – 0 and therefore go down as one of the best that ever laced ’em up.

If Canelo makes 152 lbs then WTF is the problem. He gains weight after making 152lbs. He is not cheating nobody. The contract states 152 lbs then stop crying over how much Canelo is going to weight on September 14, and let the fkn fight be what is going to be. Hey, mayweather had the chance to fight Pac Man. He is a smaller guy, if you dont want to fight a big guy then fight Pac Man or stop complaining.

GGG maybe able to make 154 I heard in an interview that he wanted a fight with Junior …Though ( He’s not carrying a lot of muscle mass and isn’t as thick as Canelo (though a little taller) If that were the case ? Whats GGG going to lose to make weight ….?

Posted July 12, 2013 11:13 pm

Exiled Yank

I like Canelo, but I think there is a reason he’s not a mw.

Posted July 12, 2013 11:13 pm

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Because 3G is NOT a big MW. He actually walks into the ring on Fight Night weighing less than some of the top Jr. MWs (e.g., Canelo, Trout, Perro, etc.)
He and his Trainer Sanchez are REAL pros and they’ve been saying they want Championship fights at 154lbs for at least two years. All these factors lead me to believe he can easily make weight.

Plus, just look at his frame and build. He’s not carrying a lot of muscle mass and isn’t as thick as Canelo (though a little taller).

Posted July 12, 2013 10:54 pm

GGG has never fought at 154 so what makes you think he can easily make 154?

Posted July 12, 2013 10:05 pm

And when Canelo RAN his punters called it defensive wizardry ……..

Yeah keep on wishing. If a fighter doesn’t bring a large crowd with him at 154 he won’t be getting a shot at Mayweather. He’ll vacate the titles or get stripped. Unless he can pull off another Cotto fight, which I doubt.

Posted July 12, 2013 9:17 pm

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

Okay…well if FMJ wins this fight and refuses to vacate all his 154lbs titles, he better defend them against other Jr. MWs like Lara. And 3G can easily make 154lbs, so FMJ better be prepared to face him and defend the titles at 154lbs in another MEGA FIGHT. That’s exactly what the real GOAT would do!

Posted July 12, 2013 9:13 pm

to all of you maywheathers balls’s lickers I wd love to c ur face when CANELO puts ur hero to sleep on September 14

Posted July 12, 2013 9:10 pm

Who cares what Canelo does and where he fights at, he’s fighting in the class he should be at this point. As far as Mayweather goes, what would you do if you weighed in for WW fights at 146 with ease and JrMW fights at 150? Hmmm you would do exactly what he’s doing fight for a big money fight in 152 catch weight fight. Then win or lose you’d look for fights at 147 where you belong…. LOL

Posted July 12, 2013 9:05 pm

Ive never made mention of Canelo and his weight lol his not lasting long at ANY weight if he fights the best PERIOD …….

Posted July 12, 2013 9:04 pm

The weight needs to go with proportionate height and length for optimal effect. Floyd always looks to me like a long fighter, long arms, long torso etc. He holds his weight nicely in his frame. He moves around different weights well. Its one of the reasons I think he would have beaten (apols for raising this issue again) pacman, his longer larger body would have kept PAC off of him. Anyways, canelo pulls huge interest with his fan base appeal. That, comrades, is why may chose him. May knows he has his number, and will have a pile of canelos fans cash too.

Posted July 12, 2013 9:02 pm

Tomato Can

It doesn’t matter what Mayweather does. He can beat Canelo, or he can lose, the fact remains he’s barely a Welterweight, he’ll never be a true JrMW, and Canelo will have a hard time fighting in any other division, but JrMW.

Posted July 12, 2013 8:58 pm

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

If FMJ is not a Jr. MW then he should’ve vacated or been stripped of his two major 154lbs titles — and subsequently his #1 154lbs ranking by Ring — before he ever crossed paths with Canelo. And if he wins this fight he will take Canelo’s 154lbs titles, which is 100% percent B.S. because it’s being fought at a lower catch weight.

So are you saying that FMJ needs to vacate ALL his 154lbs titles if he wins this fight — because “he’s not a Jr. MW?” Can’t have it both ways, boys!

Cutting weight in the weeks before weigh-ins and re-hydrating afterwards has been a MAJOR part of both boxing and wrestling for decades. If you can make weight, it’s NOT cheating! If you’re gonna keep whining about this issue, you really need to find another sport because boxing is NOT for you. Real talk.

Nobody said crap about Cotto fighting in his class when Mayweather fought him, Canelo fights Mayweather, all of sudden its not his class. Canelos is fighting in his class, others are stepping into his territory and stepping to his weight class.

The only problem is he’s short without much of a reach. It’ll be tuff for him beyond 154.

Prf conje – ummmm, Canelo is fighting in his class …lol. hes at 154lbs and fighting with Mayweather at 154lbs…so? Cotto is fighting at his class too 154lbs. IF anything they are stepping into Canelos territory.

A young guy that rehydrates 15 plus pounds out of his division probably won’t be doing it for long. He’s going to have to move up sooner or later. I bet it’s sooner…

LOL….Canelo doesn’t fight at MW dude, so WTF are you even talking about???
Posted July 12, 2013 6:24 pm I was responding to Tomato Can ……And Canelo wont be able to HIDE in the 154 for his entire career…

Hmmmm, that’s funny cause if Mayweather beats Alvarez he won’t be considered hands down the number 1 JrMW cause he isn’t one…

Good Points by the writer. Canelo may win against Mayweather (but he won’t). If he did win, his reign would not be long especially if he fights guys in his own REAL weight class. Canelo and Chavez Jr. are two of a kind. They want to win but need to cheat to do so. Alvarez should fight guys in his own weight class, and Chavez Jr. should fight at light-heavy because he comes in fight night at 180. How anyone could admire these two is beyond me.

If Canelo can avoid all the delicious Mexican food, La Cerveza Mas Fina and and weight-training, he might be able to stay at 154Lbs for quite some time. We’ll have to see, but first thing’s first. If he upsets FMJ…it will indeed start his reign as the #1 JR. MW in the world. Hands down.

but he’ll be considered great if he can accomplish something like that…Well I also doubt that Saul can beat anyone Choco Bon Bon or GGG or even Geale for that matter Those English lads Barker and Co would beat him up also ………

Not nice Author, but your point of view isn’t far from the truth. I still think Canelo is a good fighter though. He can beat his contempary JRMW’s. It doesn’t look like he’ll have success moving up in weight though. ANd his body won’t let him stay at 154 for much longer.

Mayweather time is about over, no doubt about it. I doubt it’ll end Sept, 14th though. And to put things in perspectve, Mayweather started his reign at 130 pounds. This fight will take place 22 pounds north of that, against a guy who’ll be weighing 170 on fight night. In addition to that, Canelo will have a hard time being a force above 154, which he undoubtably won’t be able to make weight at for long. So where does he go from there? Does he beat Quillin and GGG? Or how about Ward and Froch? Or maybe Stevenson/Cloud? That’ll be hard for Canelo to do. I’d bet against it, but he’ll be considered great if he can accomplish something like that…
