Johnny C, there is no one that Wilder can’t KO if he hits them? Obviously that’s a premature statement. Either that or you know something that his team that is with him every day does not. Why has he fed so long on bums? He has a punch that is hard but all boxers do. The guy had no polished talent. He’s very rugged and a polished KO artist will seperate his body and his head. Ex: Wladimir klitschko, Vitali klitschko, David Haye, Kubrat Pulev and I Think Denis Boytsov as well.

Floyd was under Top Rank but he was contracted to only fight on HBO

Vivek = you are douche. You keep saying there is no proof that Pac is on PEDs yet you keep implying that he might be on PEDs. Your journalism skills is worse than a high school student. At least they can write at a high school level.

I think Floyd wasn’t a “mainevent” type of fighter at the time vs Kostza and Floyd was under Top Rank who do business w/ both HBO and Sho.

Posted May 13, 2013 5:13 pm

And Martinez fights at 160 so come on now, he is way to big for Floyd

Posted May 13, 2013 4:48 pm

Floyd never ducked Hatton, Williams was overrated and couldn’t stay at one weight class long enough to earn a shot at anybody, Hstton got to Kostya first and don’t forget Kostya was a Showtime fighter and Floyd was an HBO fighter so that fight could not have been made.

As for Floyd vs Canelo, we all know it won’t happen. Floyd will duck Canelo just like he ducked Pacquiao, Martinez, Williams, Clottey, Tszyu and anyone else who represented risk.

stuck in a moment

GBP will not make that fight. They don’t want either guy losing a fight. Risky fight for both. If their both unbeaten for Floyd’s last fight then maybe

Mayweather-Canelo the fight that has to happen. Mayweather can not run like he did Pacquiao. The fans won’t forgive him this time. On September he won’t refuse Canelo. Canelo brought 40 thousand fans for Trout. Mayweather-Canelo will surpass DLH-Mayweather PPV.

Mr.Tark, good observation on your part. Marquez is a quality opponent, trained by a master trainer in Nacho berstein. Hence the exciting trilogies with Pacquiao. A fighter vs a classic textbook coynter puncher who is willing to take the risks and let his hands go will almost always produce fireworks. However should theyvever face off again i dont think the result will be the same. I woul d expect another highly competitive struggle with the outcome being in doubt down to the wire. However i must question Marquez mindset at thus time. Picking timothy Bradley over granting this man a rematch makes no sense . He is LOSING money actually. Also his strange attitude in regards to saying he has no desire to face Pacquiao again, that he is his superior, smacks of something else. Bradley is coming off of a brutal fight in whuch he was concussed at least on two occasions DURING the struggle with his Russian opponent. Bradley though brave without doubt and a willing warrior, in truth is only a punch or two away from being knicjed out in his next fight. Perhaps Marquez is winding down towards the close of an exceptional career as well as Pacquiao. On a side note, there is a reason the former greats speak fondly and well of Pacquiao,Leonard, hagler and hearns being a few. They recognize an old shool warrior when they see one.

fighters who rehydrate too much are usually not in top condition, fighters that do that are usually afraid to gas out and limit their output until the later rounds (chavez vs Martinez) a well conditioned fighter doesn’t gain that much by fight time and can box circles around them…Daniel Santos coming in over 170 vs Margarito was getting beat easily but resorted to headbutting and wrestling…so too much emphasis is being put into it when all it really is. is a handicap. the only time it’s an advantage is when the opponent is not really a threat

What has happened to manny Pacquiao isn’t a mystery at all actually. He has mentally MOVED on. Meaning 1: he is content and satisfied now with where he is in his life. Boxing ni longer holds the same appeal as it did when he was first making waves in the sport. 2: You are correct more than you realize sir when you bring up religion. His priorities in his personal life are in order due to this. It brings a sense of calm to a persons life. 3: He is SINCERELY dedicated to improving the plight of the people in his country and i STRONGLY suspect that that is where his TRUE PASSION is directed now. Bam bam rios IS a good choive. In spiye of what some critics say, Pacquiao has for the most part provided us the fans with truly some of the most exciting fights we’ve seen in some time. In other words our moneys worth. He has akso put his bravery on the line many times against quality fighters. Erik morales,Marquez just to name a few. Knowing full well that they could defeat him on a given night as he would do the same. He is teuly a throw back in that regard . Also as a sportsman he shines bright. Unlike others whi unfortunately had to pull out the ugly Spector of the race card in order to demean his accomplishmentr. Mayweather and bernard hopkins come to mind. I for one will enjoy him as a fighter until he decides to call it a day, which I suspect will be sooner than later. Cheers.

A very good article and I agree with Wallace regarding Mayweather not needing anyone to draw in the crowd. He is the “man” and doesn’t need Alvarez but Alvarez needs Mayweather.

Rios will be a very good test for Pacquaio, maybe too good. I don’t know what happened to change Pacquaio, whether it’s “cleaning up” or having a “religious” experience, or simply losing his desire to fight, but something has changed.

The fight that everyone had wanted to see, Mayweather and Pacquaio, is dead in the water now even if Pac-Man defeats Rios. Mayweather is too much for him. I look for Rios to give Pacquaio hell all night until it’s over (one way or the other).

Wilder and Wlad Klitchko? If that does happen, it may end Wilder’s career.

If you like seeing little guys run around and out box and pot shot bigger guys, who may turn the fight in their favor with a wild punch or the like, then Mayweather/Canelo is a fight to see. If it’s at 154 all advantages will be in Canelo’s favor, if it’s at a catch weight or 147, then has the potentual to be tainted. The fight will generate big money though so, it’ll more than likely happen at some point. But I look for Showtime to milk the fans a little before making this fight. Perhaps it’ll happen next year. But we’ll see.

I’ve never liked fighters that rehydrate 20 pounds or so for a fight. It’s ridiculous, but the rules say it’s fine. For me, the fight needs to happen at 154 and Canelo should be able to rehydrate like normal. It’s complete bs, but DLH used to require 48 hour weight ins so he could make weight and rehydrate. It’s how the game is played. Maybe FM can require rehydration limits. I’ve never seen that happen before, but maybe it will happen this time. Who knows. All I know is that I want to see this fight and want to see both men at the best, this means FM at 150 to 154 and Canelo ballooning up to LHW.

Posted May 13, 2013 10:05 am

These guys are ALREADY manipulating their weights crazily in order to fight ie Canelo weighing 172 the night of the fight and 154 the day before… Or Chavez Jr weighing 160 the day before then 181 the night of the fight…Floyd is the SAME weight 30 days out as he is the night of the fight for the most part, same for Manny Pacquiao which is rare in todays world of boxing… Being aware that the guy you step on the scales with is NOT the guy you are going to get in the ring with is only sensible and in EXTREME cases something to consider… Obviously this is part of the sport but when guys are blowing up crazy like that its debateable…. If Floyd came in the ring 15 or 20 pounds heavier than an opponent there would be picket signs around the block….

Wilder Wlad is not a good match. Wilder looked horrible against Audley and WK will beat him down and ruin his career. There is no need to rush this fight.

Posted May 13, 2013 9:55 am

Catchweights… Ridictulous. What next? Mayweather vs. Klitschko at a catchweight of 190 lbs? Either you can make a weight, or you cannot. Fight at a weight class or at the next higher/lower weight class. This catchweight and dehydration bs is not good for boxing. Fight at your weight – end of story.

Posted May 13, 2013 9:49 am

Floyd Mayweather certainly does NOT belong at MW he has ALREADY come up from 130 pounds early in his career and it was NOT enough… Oscar De La Hoya is a bigger man and bigger puncher than Floyd Mayweather and he looked TERRIBLE during his two fights at MW because the gap in physicality is too big…. Floyd Mayweather is an chronologically OLDER fighter and the obsession with seeing a guy whos career is winding down try and disadvantage himself to the point where he loses is bizarre…. Why would Mayweather seek to give up ridiculous poundages in order to take a loss? He has already fought bigger men on plenty of occasions…Its NEVER going to be enough, if he beats Canelo then it will be GGG or the NEXT guy 15 years younger and 20s bigger till he finally loses…. Most Greats are very much on the slide by 36, Ali was losing to Spinks, Holmes took questionable losses to Mike Spinks, Pacquiao suffered a HORRIBLE KO at 34…. Floyd Mayweather has EVERY right to fight in his appropriate weight class if he chooses to do so…. Canelo is another Johnny come lately that when Floyd beats him he will be downgraded IMMEDIATELY “Alvarez was made for Floyd” “Mayweather just pot shotted and did not let the kid hit him on the chin weighing 170 pounds)….. I can hear it now….

Posted May 13, 2013 9:38 am

A comparison between the dynamics of HW and WW does not even begin to fly Curtley… HWs an open division and guys know they will face boxers who are not standardized at weigh-in… Again I would love to see you guys root for Floyd facing a guy who will be 130 on fight night when he’s 151… Please you guys would scream bloody murder… I think the bout will happen but the casual nature of Alvarez size is an attempt to negate FMJs skills, athletic talent and work ethic at age 36….

Posted May 13, 2013 9:28 am

As for those who say that a 20lbs weight advantage is not fair, Haye never gets the same pass when fighting guys who outweigh him by 30lb or in some cases a lot more, I feel that Floyd can easily overcome Canelo’s size advantage and he may have to adopt an even more cagey style ala Leonard vs Hagler but he can box Alvarez’s ears off, as for Martinez I think that would be a toss up and a hell of a fight, why not do that at 154?

Posted May 13, 2013 8:48 am

I think Floyd is a phenomenal fighter and feel he could go up to 154 and even 160 and win a title but he would also stand a chance of losing its this fear that for me stops him being amongst the best ever. I mean Duran was naturally smaller than Floyd and he managed to beat Barkley, a huge Middleweight. I truly believe Floyd would beat Canelo at 154 and stands a good chance at beating Martinez at 160

Posted May 13, 2013 8:44 am

i understand that everyone is looking for mayweather to fight canelo at 154 while canelo balloons to 170 and some change but where is the calls for canelo to fight the ggg, ward, frochs ,believe me i wouldn’t mind seeing mayweather test himself but the ones who are going bananas for him to fight canelo wants to see him lose bad but i have news for you canelo cant do it fellas and when mayweather gets past him who’s gonna be you guys savior then i’m just curious to know who yaw got lined up for Mayweather..yeezzzir!

I believe many boxing fans boycotted PPV and therefore did not order this nonsense fight. I further believe that Fraud should continue to be boycotted until he steps up his game…which will never happen. By the way, I got an opponent for Fraud…some guy that works at walmart in the sanatation dept., I think he’s handicapped as well and may be on heart meds….Looks to weigh 150lb… Please Fraud, give him a shot!!

Good stuff Vivek, as usual. Bears, Spartacus 65, I get what you are both saying and agree with much of it. Real fans of the sport want to see Floyd tested, and against the Guerreros of this world, that just isnt gonna happen. Mayweather is the best fighter at 135 – 147 bar none. Some are saying he should fight Marquez again, but the first fight was lopsided due to styles. Marquez himself said it, the styles don’t work in his favour. Canelo would be the man to change perception of Mayweather as a cherry picker, ducker, or whatever the sceptics want to call him but the facts are that there will be a 20lb+ difference on fight night. That simply isn’t fair. That is why this fight would either need a same day weigh in, a rehydration clause, or even both. I don’t think we should be picking at fighter for match ups that dont get made when the biggest problems in the sport are Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions. Oscar and Arum (especially Arum in my opinion) are the ones robbing us of the greatest fights. Its way past due that these guys should start paying something back to the real people that make the sport – The Fans! How many times do we hear ”I’d like to thank the fans” at a press conference after the fight? They aren’t thanking us, they don’t give a s**t about us, each one on that dias, whether fight, Manager or Promoter only cares about one thing – Numbers – tickets sold / PPV’s bought. Fans actually want thanking for our dedication by seeing some great matches being put together by the greedy promoters that control the sport.

There is only so long that fans will watch mismatches. We live in hope that one day the sport will change with many of us saying that it can’t go on, it has to change at some point. It will only ever change when people stop buying the PPV’s and buying the tickets, and there are enough casual fans out there to make sure that won’t happen. Floyd has 5 fights left on his Showtime deal and I would like to see him face the following guys (Promotional issues / hydration clauses…whatever)
1 – Sergio Martinez at 154
2 – Manny Pacquiao at 147
3 – Tim Bradley at 147
4 – Canelo Alvarez at 147 / 154
5 – Adrien Broner at 147

Agreed. Wilder definitely needs to work more on his game. Particularly defense. Also he needs to shorten his punches up better. Beating the likes of Audley Harrison is actually a negative. That’s not representative of healthy progress at all. Chisora is marginally better. He does have a solid chin and heart. Wilder can get some quality rounds in to gauge his progress. In spite of his hugely embarrasing non performance against klitchsko, haye DOES possess talent. Its his will to win against adversity that’s in question. Still it wouks be a good fight for Wilder to sharpen his tools more. The jury is still out.

When Pacquiao finally realized he was a fighter first, the Bradley travesty and the Marquez third fight woke him up,he buckled down and went back to being a fighter first. Face it: Marquez is his equal. I’m a huge Pacquiao fan but not a delusional one like others are. Its good to have a nemesis cause it makes a fighter elevate his game. Its called quality competition. He looked much more in his fight like himself than he did in his last four. Fact: roach finally figured out the best way to fight a counter puncher is to use controlled aggression with unpredictable head movement. Manny employed the Tyson peek a boo style brilliantly. There were several moments where Marquez looked confused due to this. Only when Pacquiao stopped to think is when Marquez was able to score with that right effectively. Still Pacquiao was very close to.pulling away until his miscue. Up until that point he was beginning to pull away and Marquez ub spite of what he says was definitely going in the direction of being the victim of a stoppage himself.

Haven’t seen enough of Wilder to know, beating the recently oft beaten and faded Harrison shows nothing he got to fight some good Eastern Europeans or David Haye, for us to judge him, Chisora could help us evalute him better, but even that is really not enough, Vitali Klitschiko beat Derik with one hand and Haye distroyed him

Posted May 13, 2013 1:40 am

This way Floyd avoids the catchweight but protects him self with the rehydration weight. Canelo should move UP to face Ward SOON. He’s a LHW.

Posted May 13, 2013 1:31 am

Floyd should ensure victory by giving Canelo a 167 rehydration clause. As long as Floyd comes in at 148 or UP he’ll WIN. IF he lets him come in at 172 then he could LOSE.

Posted May 13, 2013 1:29 am

“mayweather can continue to earn top dollar for fighting anyone he likes” i dont know about that vivek. the numbers are down and showtime executives are not liking it. they are GETTING INVOLVED and trying to make mayweather vs canelo happen cause it would be HUGE. mayweather fighting the kahns of the world is WEAK. the more we see the weak stuff the more its gonna decline. fight fans know mayweather needs to fight canelo, pac, martinez, even trout. those are the big money fights and you could even throw golovkins name in that hat (at least thats what golovkin himself is saying) and even broner at 147. floyd not making the great matchups at this point and he is just gonna be called CHERRY PICKING DUCKMASTER. the guy who ducked pac and martinez (thats already a fact) we will be adding canelo and broner. floyd could fight all these guys and make a case for the GOAT but instead it seems like 50 cent was right about floyd.
