Rocky Juarez vs. Ponce de Leon, Juan Manuel Lopez, Orlando Salido, and Mickey Garcia are good fights. But probably all losses for Rocky Juarez. Antonio Escalante is an over-rated fighter. Rocky Juarez had a good win against an over-rated fighter. I think Rocky Juarez does not have the reach to fight Ponce de Leon. Juarez is too slow for Juan Manuel Lopez. Juarez is too small for Orlando Salido. And he is too old to fight a true up and coming star in Mickey Garcia. The best bet for Rocky Juarez is to find 2-3 more fighters like Antonio Escalante — and score early big knockouts. And then maybe take a 1-2 fights with these more elite fighters. Skills pay the bills. But also smart match-making. Take the smart fights.

I saw the fight and the author is making too happy a story. Antonio Escalante was said to be an exciting up and coming fighter. He looked to me like an over-rated young fighter with bad defense and bad footwork. Escalante throws with good power — but he winds up and he is very wide. This leaves him literally leading his punches with his face. You don’t usually see fighters in this day and age leading with their face. But their was Escalante leaving his face wide open and frankly stumbling around on bad footwork. Rocky Juarez was the same fighter that lost 10 fights. He doesn’t usually get off first. He is not that fast. But he is an Olympian and he has enough experience and power to do damage to a young fighter who leads with his face and has bad defense and bad footwork.

Rocky is a great fighter – with his talent he should have been a world champ by now. I’m looking forward to seeing Rocky at 126 and I’m hoping he’s still got enough left to win a world title even at 32 and rising!

Always liked Juarez. Hard to tell what he can do against the top guys now a days, but I would not mind seeing him get a shot at someone.

Im from El Paso and i hate how they keep bringing up Escalante’s name and that other bum David Rodriguez. Ive gone to watch some of their fights in EP and i am embarrased for them to act like they did something great when they just lnocked a bumb someone grabbed of the street and offered a 40oz to. They jump on the ropes and pound their chest. Come on Tony is not only a has been but a never should have been if not for all the bumbs he fought. And david is even scared of those bumbs. I cant believe golden boy and whoever handles baby huey would put their stamp on these slugs. We need to look 4 that next young hungry real fighter to invest our time and energy on in el paso not these bumbs. I can only imagine escalante will now blame his handlers again. Always someone elses fault. Just retire buddie go back to selling burritos like u use to. And quict saying u graduated from Coronado. Im from Coronado and you wouldnt be able to carry our books there homie. Real talk

I agree that Rocky is not only a class act but well deserving of a title shot. Escalante on the other hand has never been a top contender at 130. He was strong at 122 because he would ballon up to 140-150 on fight night. He also had hand picked opponents throughout most of his career. As soon as he fought a decent puncher he got knocked out. Wheres he from El Paso? Well Tony you should go back to el paso or juarez and get a normal job cuz you’re gonna end up getting seriously hurt if you keep getting knocked out.

I was wrong about Rocky. You have to tip your hat off to someone that has stayed in his profession for so long. I didn’t care for him too much when he thought he beat Barrera but Barrera is retired and Rocky is still here. I hope he does wonders in the years he has left in the sport. Congrats.

Excellent write-up. didn’t catch the Juarez bout. Rocky apparently delivered a prime performance. although, even in his prime he would lapse into spells of inactivity but that doesn’t seem to have been a problem last night. anyway, i think he gets outworked and still comes up one step short of defeating Ponce or Salido. he’s got a shot v. Lopez. the book on him is wide open: pressure exposes his only above-average chin. Rocky socks harder than Salido and if he can apply the pressure and absorb the punishment, he likely defeats Lopez.
