Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. LionKing)

Lara does have a bad habit of stalling and becoming inactive when caught on the ropes. If Canelo can push him back, catch him on the ropes a few times, and tee off with power combinations…he could really hurt Lara. Possibly knock him down and/or out.

But Canelo must have the right game plan going into this fight. He has to pressure Lara relentlessly and push back into the ropes as often as possible. If he can continue doing that, and unload bombs on Lara when he has him cornered, he can win this fight.

De La Hoya looked pathetically weight drained for Pacquiao.. even worse than Canelo looked for Floyd..

Pacquiao attacked Oscar like a swarm of bees and he was powerless to do anything about it. He had the strength of a Corona Girl. The way he was fighting he may not have been able to stick a Corona Girl with a good straight one.

Oscar was a very smart guy with tons of experience and business sense. If DLH can come in weight drained, anyone can screw up the weight making process.

“the day will come when your body rebels like crazy during the process. When that day comes you will either hurt yourself badly and lose the fight …” which is why few will ever give Pacquiao* full-credit for defeating DLH. perhaps the most severe case of ego-fueled dieting in boxing history. at the time, the bigger(?) DLH was going to step on Manny* on his way to Hatton and the truly big payday. instead, he’s outweighed by Manny* on fight-night and lost the fight badly.

Sredmond.., “A TRULY BETTER pugilist is not gonna let 1.5 or 2 pounds derail him from a victory.”

Is that why Floyd paid a 600,000 dollar fine rather than go from 146 to 144???

Is that why Canelo paid a 200,000 dollar fine rather than go from 155 to 154?

They didn’t let one or two pounds derail their victories. Canelo learned his lesson.

This article confuseing me. Is Lara a boxer that has a hard punch from the outside as khan? Or can’t he fight inside as he say e can. Well he he can’t fight inside he taking away the easy part of beating canelo. Still say Lara won this fight as Lara still better outside.

Posted May 15, 2014 2:29 pm

Excuses for Canelos performance against Mayweather are really the bastion of the WEAK, this default assumption that every pound determines the winner or loser is WEAK… Alvarez beat a TON of guys by rehydrating overnight but NONE of them was an ATG fighter the equivalent of Mayweather so his loss should come as no real surprise to those who REALLY know the fight game… Hopkins conquered ODH as an OLD man, and did the same with Pavlik… FACT is that a TRULY BETTER pugilist is not gonna let 1.5 or 2 pounds derail him from a victory… Floyd was too fast, too slick and too smart for Canelo, just like he has been for everyone else over the course of 18 years… No shame in that.

Posted May 15, 2014 1:57 pm

I disagree with that one Tach, then you have to basically say that about most of the WW, JR MW and MW division they all put on big pounds… Canelo facing WW’s was not gonna fly but I am sure Lara will only be outweighed by a few pounds if any… Clearly Canelo does not belong in the ring with 147 pounders thats why when lames argue Mayweather had a physical advantage over him its utterly pathetic and indicative of a VERY high Estrogen level (Tark, Hidalgo)… Eventually Alvarez will move up to MW, but at this point he is not a 168 pounder.

Posted May 15, 2014 1:53 pm

Sredmond Canelo weighed 172 lbs fight night vs Trout. Like I said if Canelo had balls he would be fighting at super middle weight if he had balls.

Posted May 15, 2014 12:45 am

Canelo had NO issues beating over 40 other fighters including Austin Trout where he weighed in at 153, minute he’s in the ring with a 36 year old Mayweather the excuses start FLYING! Meanwhile Hidalgo gives Manny no grief for beating Cotto at 145??? Canelo had the best shot possible and got schooled, to his credit Alvarez conceded FMJ was too fast and smart “muy intelligente” weak azz posters making excuses tsk tsk

Posted May 14, 2014 9:35 pm

Ridiculous comment Mayweather conceded EVERY physical factor imaginable except height, Canelo had been blasting out WW’s with the body mass who were bigger than Floyd.. Alvarez was 13 years younger and could not do a damn thing except get outboxed.. Marquez looked damn good putting Manny on his face, and terrible getting CLOWNED by FMJ, guess Manny is not a viable opponent since Mayweather at 149 soaking wet is such a huge fighter??? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Posted May 14, 2014 9:18 pm

You’re right Te Tumbo.., I always thought it was better for a boxer to fight closer to his true ripped fighting weight, rather than dehydrate his body severely and then rehydrate so he could give himself a 10 to 20 pound size advantage. That does damage the body. If you do it enough times the day will come when your body rebels like crazy during the process.

When that day comes you will either hurt yourself badly and lose the fight … or you won’t make the weight and be badly fined and embarrassed.

Posted May 14, 2014 5:40 pm

te tumbo

the hydration weights may appear as a calculated advantage on paper but they are invariably a disadvantage for the fighter blowing-up 20lbs+ overnight. they may be heavier but NOT as strong or stronger as the listed weight would otherwise indicate, e.g., v. Canelo and Maidana, the 150lb Mayweather appeared to be the physically bigger and equally strong opponent. he was definitely the fitter and healthier fighter who devoted his time to training and refining his fight-plan not dieting to make an artificially-low weight.

Posted May 14, 2014 4:20 pm

Tach all these guys are blowing up overnight absent Mayweather and PAC.. Maidana was 165, Ortiz 164 and that’s coming from 147… Both Trout and Canelo were in the 170’s the night they fought, Lara is a true 154 pounder so body mass should not be a factor if he is as good as people think he is.. Neva stops Money May?

Posted May 14, 2014 2:53 pm

Sredmomd if Camelo wanted to show his true hardness he would not be fighting at 154 he would be fighting at 165 or 170. Canelo hard sucker softer than a vanilla wafer.

Posted May 14, 2014 12:34 pm

Lara, suffers from apathy in the ring at times, that affair with Vanes was ugly, he got gifted with Molina and was in trouble with Angulo.. He is a very talented fighter but he is nobodies Mayweather equivalent and I think he is gonna find Canleo a very hard proposition.. Trouts a good boxer but he cannot punch and this was part of his undoing against both Alvarez and Lara..Canelo is gonna get leather on Lara and it’s gonna hurt..

Posted May 14, 2014 10:53 am

IF Lara was so great, he wouldn’t have desperately avoided redeeming his “MD” v. Molina. a fight that was “. . . as much about what Lara isn’t tonight, as it is what Molina is.” Lara isn’t that great.

Posted May 14, 2014 10:36 am

te tumbo

Canelo’s fight-plan v. Mayweather was entirely misguided. Canelo’s ego and confidence was justifiably pumped-up by his dominating boxing-punching performance v. Trout who was favored as being the superior boxer-puncher. at this point, Canelo becomes convinced that he’s the bigger, stronger, younger, and equally(?) skilled and talented boxer poised to outclass(?!?) an older, smaller, and increasingly stationary Mayweather his first defeat. “it’s my time” he repeatedly declared during pre-fight interviews. the result was a bout during which Canelo thought too much and punched too little. while he was imagining how his prime speed and strength would shock and awe Floyd into submission, Mayweather smartly boxed and pot-shotted his way to the UD win. by the time Canelo realized what had happened, the $$ Money had left the dock.

If Lara is so GREAT then why was he down 2 times against Angulo, once in round 4 and the other, in round 9. Where was his speed and evasiveness. Angulo is NO Canelo, he doesn’t have Canelo’s power… Lara isn’t what folks think he is … Canelo will KO his ass ……” The Language of the Ring”

Posted May 14, 2014 8:35 am

This is Canelos fight to signal his true quality to hardcore fans, Lara is a talented guy and he will have his moments, but something tells me that Alvarez is gonna get to him and make the punches count when he does..

Posted May 14, 2014 6:37 am

FA says.., “Punch counts don’t lie, Canelo decided to concede the fight rather than risk getting hurt.”

I don’t think it was a matter of taking risks.. He didn’t have the energy to do anything. He didn’t look right at the weigh-in. This time I predict he fights at 155 again … and pays the fine again.

He’s a middleweight.. On to Sergio Martinez win or lose.

Posted May 13, 2014 11:09 pm

Take Lara by School HOUSE decision.

Posted May 13, 2014 11:07 pm

Yup. As I said before. Those who shrink down just to make weight and then blow back UP on Fight night are SISSYFIED. FOOLS that think that weight WINS Fights. Nope. SKILLS do. Unless you come in 20lbs heavier than your opponent. Even In that case you’re still a SISSYFIED WINNER. Because you WON with weight not SKILLS. IF Canelo doesn’t come in 20 lbs heavier than Lara he’s going to SCHOOL. Canelo is in MY personal Top 10 P4P but Lara is Top 5. Canelo has much BALLS though. I APPLAUD him for that.

Posted May 13, 2014 11:06 pm

This would be a good fight to watch if one can expect fair refereeing and judging. Fantasy!

Posted May 13, 2014 10:57 pm

What the hell is Canelo talking about he does not even fight in the correct division because he is a red head chicken. Canelo will come in weighing 170 pounds talking trash he should be fighting at super middle weight but Canelo is scared he would get knocked out in that division.

Posted May 13, 2014 10:33 pm

Interesting point te tumbo, will Lara have the pop to get Canelo’s respect, if not he loses., and he very well might not.

I’m struggling to pick a winner here, but am now going with Canelo because of this.

“Canelo looked very different after a couple of lead rights from Floyd. Then he couldn’t pull the trigger.” – Yup. Only chance he had to win was by pressure and he tucked his tail between his legs. Punch counts don’t lie, he decided to concede the fight rather than risk getting hurt.

Posted May 13, 2014 8:10 pm

Everybody has a plan until they get hit. Canelo looked very different after a couple of lead rights from Floyd. Then he couldn’t pull the trigger. Floyd is not known for his punching power but it still stings. Lara not a banger but a boxer puncher and is a southpaw. Canelo is a beast when he is coming forward and can find you. He needs to cut off the ring which he couldn’t do against Floyd or Trout. Angulo was just as mobil as Arreola and Rios and can only come forward. Lara has a little more movement and counters well with a hard left. I wonder how much Canelo wanted this fight. The reason I say this is because of the post fight challenge Lara laid on him and he back peddled instead of saying “lets do this”. Why the change of heart? This could be an instant classic. With a win Lara becomes the next big thing. Canelo wins it validates his place among the elite, if he loses it’s a longer fall than if Lara loses.

Posted May 13, 2014 7:00 pm

NOPE!!! … The more Canelo throws the more counterpunching opportunities Lara will have. So Canelo has to be very selective and work behind the jab until he cuts the ring off. Then he needs to display a lot of energy, punches, and power.

He needs to be super smart. Lara starts clipping you when he gets a read on you.

“as long as Canelo doesn’t hesitate to throw punches he should have a relatively easy time v. Lara who will have to emphasize defense to avoid being KO’d.” – Agreed, but I don’t see Canelo steamrolling Lara as you do. Basically Canelo needs to let his hands go to win, and Lara needs to counter punch and turn him to win. Whomever forces their game plan on the other wins.

Posted May 13, 2014 5:09 pm

Lara will win easily.

Posted May 13, 2014 4:52 pm

Got Canelo in this one.

Posted May 13, 2014 4:24 pm

Lara should be careful. Canelo is not Angulo.

Posted May 13, 2014 3:31 pm

te tumbo

in wins and losses, Lara does not have the offensive power to compel opponents to respect his space. Molina, Vanes, Williams, and Angulo planted themselves directly in Lara’s wheelhouse and made themselves at home with hooks and uppercuts to the head and body. that is, when Lara didn’t slide along the ropes and try other evasive moves to avoid sustained exchanges. as long as Canelo doesn’t hesitate to throw punches he should have a relatively easy time v. Lara who will have to emphasize defense to avoid being KO’d. whether by KO, TKO, or UD, Canelo is poised to permanently demote this guy to the B-class.

Posted May 13, 2014 12:47 pm

overtraining is sometimes a problem, that’s why you should train the same as you did for your best showing, when you train extra hard you sometimes peak too soon and lose your timing in the actual fight…..never peak before fight time…all trainers should know when their fighter is peaking !!!

Posted May 13, 2014 11:15 am

I have my doubts Lara will fight the kind of fight Canelo expects.I think he learned his lesson in the Angulo fight.Canelo however is a strong young talented fighter.Lara may frustrate him however as did floyd,.

Posted May 13, 2014 10:26 am

If Lara can stick and move all night he wins but if he stays in the pocket, not good. Canelo punches too hard and will TKO Lara in the later rounds.

Each and every Rob Smith article is the same. it starts with a few interesting quotes followed by Smith’s own “analysis” which usually sucks. Every time when I get to the “analysis”-part I check the if it’s a Rob Smith piece. I haven’t been wrong yet.

I’d say Vivek is the worst scribe on ESB, but Rob Smith is up there among the top 3.

I can’t see how Lara will hurt Canelo, Canelo too big and rugged, much power, His age is a Big factor as well, he’s 23 has a lot of heart and is hungry for this. Lara will be surprised and stopped some where mid fight maybe earlier, Remember Paul Williams beat Lara and he had 2 draws, he’s not invincible as his record shows… “The Language of the Ring “

Posted May 13, 2014 8:08 am

in my opinion Lara’s boxing ability is some what over rated. i say Canelo over powers him for a late stoppage. Canelo is a lot stronger.

Posted May 13, 2014 6:18 am

Erislandy Lara will give Canelo a boxing lesson for the ages. Lara is a seasoned technical boxer that will beat Canelo in the same manner as Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker did against Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Canelo is going to get hit all night with the straight left, the right hook and the uppercuts. He will be swinging at air. Canelo is mostly a counter puncher, and if he tries to attack Lara, he’s going to get countered often. The southpaw stance will trouble Canelo. Canelo’s only chance is to catch Lara cold, which isn’t going to happen. Lara wins by Majority Decision 9 rounds to 3.

The FAKERS keeps using my name!!! Sorry already picked CANELO by CUBAN CRUSHING late stoppage!!!

Posted May 12, 2014 7:25 pm

This pundit says.., “Lara isn’t quite as fast as Mayweather.”

Lara is just as fast as, or faster than Floyd. Floyd looked slow vs Maidana. Like Floyd wasn’t perfectly trained or something. I don’t think Floyd is getting old. Sometimes your A game isn’t popping on fight night. Canelo looked slow vs Floyd too. Saul lacked energy and pace. If Saul fights like that Lara might stop him. I think he’ll be better, so I think it’s very interesting.

Canelo had a decent pace and output vs Trout, who is a bigger, taller, and rangier southpaw than Lara is. But Lara fought damned near a perfect fight versus Trout. Trout’s height, range, and reach didn’t trouble Lara one bit. Lara out-scored him easily.

Lara has really good sparring with the Charlo brothers. You can’t do better. In the last year or so he’s really gotten better. Boxing guys with that much skill and speed every day can bring your game up dramatically.

If I was training Canelo I would prioritize cutting the ring off, pushing the pace, bringing tons of energy, driving the straight right-left hook combination in multiples, getting the liver shot in off the straight right-left hook-straight right—and basically doing all things he should have been doing versus Floyd.

Posted May 12, 2014 7:07 pm

Canelo is TOO SLOW in his feet. His feet are in wet cement. Lara will defeat him by SCHOOL HOUSE decision. Lara has more SKILLS and more foot speed. EASY Fight to pick. And I THANK Haymon and Shaefer for putting another Fight together that gives ME an easy boost to MY Outstanding record.

No, ESB, I am not posting comments too quickly. “Canelo’s loss to Mayweather made him a better fighter” On the contrary, I believe that Canelo’s loss to Mayweather has shown him how easy it is to lose (and he didn’t seem to mind it one bit).

Posted May 12, 2014 6:25 pm

I can’t see how Lara can win, All the pressure Canelo will put on him , Lara can’t run and again I see Canelo being relentless in
his pursuit of him….. This one is easy to pick, Lara has no idea who he is facing when they step in the ring… Canelo’s loss to Mayweather made him a better fighter and Lara is NO …”The Language of the Ring “

It Canelo can force Lara into a real fight, he wins.. But the blue print to beat him has been drawn by Mayweather, and I suspect Lara will copy it.
Shame really, because it’s a very boring design..

Canelo has a point. That’s why Lara got in trouble with Pero. But he was also standing and trading too much that night. He’s better when he moves in and out of the pocket and counters. That’s what he’ll likely do with Canelo which will make it less fun to watch if he’s successful. Canelo’s job is to make it a dogfight, then it can go either way. Good 50-50 fight here regardless of what the oddsmakers post.
