I wouldn’t give Broner a rematch if I were Maidana. It was conclusive.

Posted January 13, 2014 3:23 am

I still can’t believe people even talk about Top Rank fighters fighting Golden boy fighters. Bradley vs Broner, Maidana vs Providnikov. These fights will not happen please stop talking about them. They will only happen if a fighters contract expires and he changes stables. They don’t even fight on the same networks anymore please people stop burning my eyes with such comments.

Dave.. What’s your ESB ranking? I need to know what Tier you’re currently on because speaking in foreign tongues on here is strictly verboten unless you’re Tier 2 or above. In case you don’t know, there’s only one person above Tier 2 on here and that person just so happens to be moi, Lord Gonzo of ESB aka the ”Greatest poster in this site’s history” aka King of the Vultures. Please forward your papers to my chief aide Kenny Wolfshadow ASAP so we can assess your current ranking total and decide whether you’ve been guilty of transgressing ESB protocol.

Now they’re talking about Maidana not granting the rematch. That would be LOL if true. Fact is there was no rematch clause and GBP is trying to steam roll him into doing it for their money fighter. GTFO.

Other than good potential for a strong purse, I see no reason for Maidana to give Broner a rematch; the fight was too one-sided.

Posted January 12, 2014 9:19 am

Maindana is complaining that he was not given a rematch with Khan but that he should not give Broner a rematch. First off, when Maidana fought Khan, Khan was the champion, in his fight with Broner, Broner was the champion. After the Maindan-Khan fight, did not Maidana lose by a pretty good margin to Devon Alexander, and did not Khan lose two straight fights after that. Unless Khan is really shot as the writer says, it has been argued by many in the boxing community that Khan might give Mayweather some problems. Why many were really happy that Maidana won the fight, as Broner has pointed out, they mention his loss more than Maidana’s win, does anyone really believe that a Mayweather Maidana fight would be competetivee? the fighter I really wish Mayweather to fight, because he deserves it is Erisandy Lara.

I’m surprised more people aren’t calling for a Maidana vs Provodnikov fight. I think it’s one of the best fights to be made in boxing right now. Both guys are champions, both are coming off of big wins and both are relentless pressure fighters. It would be a tremendous fight.

Since there was no rematch clause and Schaefer is now claiming there was, Maidana should demand a rematch clause is tied to this rematch. That way if the judges rob him Broner will have to fight him again.

Posted January 11, 2014 8:23 pm

left hook

There is no real need for a rematch if the first win was convincing enough Broner needs to fight Devon Alexander or Timothy Bradley as they would smash him to pieces too.Broner is too full of himself and can do with a beating again preferably from Tim Bradley, who’ll beat him real good.

“Maidana finds it interesting that he’s being steered into a giving an immediate rematch against Broner, but he wasn’t given a rematch with Khan after all these years by Golden Boy.” – A good point. Maidana is not the money fighter at GBP, Broner and Khan are. Fact is there was no rematch clause and now Schaefer claims there was. He’s lying obv.

Posted January 11, 2014 5:52 pm

““Because even when their money is gone, they will always have their belts. “…….. Until they pawn there belts for money, of course….”

My point was, Tomato Can, that they keep their belts for life but they only keep their titles until they lose them to someone else or are stripped of them or forfeit them.

Belts are trophies. Fighters are competitors who compete not only for titles and trophies but also for fame and fortune. Floyd Mayweather Jr. once said that titles didn’t mean anything. But he has changed his stance since then–he’s all about collecting belts and titles now. That’s why he’s fighting in two weight divisions. Oh yeah, and the money of course LOL!

Posted January 11, 2014 4:30 pm

Thank you for clarifying!
If it’s not in the contract then no way should he give a rematch.
Mayweather / Maidana sells weel.
One, he shows the world that ‘his style’ can beat Maidana and that Broner just didn’t use it right.
Two, it pisses off Broner which could lead to a later grudge matchM
Three, its Mayweather continuing to take on winners and champions. If he fights Kahn, that will be diappointing even if Khan is supposedly a tough style fight.
Four, maybe Broner and Pac-man can fight.

On any event, thanks again…

Posted January 11, 2014 3:54 pm

I agree, if anything it is more likely that Broner will be knocked out in a second fight because Maidana knows he can do it.

Posted January 11, 2014 3:53 pm

Gonzo the Dragonborn is right there is no way there wasnt a rematch clause that schafer didnt know about – hats off to broner for wanting the rematch but i didnt see a thing in the first fight that can convince me he could beat maidana

Although there was no rematch clause in the event that Broner lost, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer sees that as being among one of the options for the 24-year-old.

“I have to tell you, I would like to see a rematch,” said Schaefer. “I would like a rematch at the Alamodome. There is no rematch clause.”

If the rematch is contracted, fair enough. If not, Maidana should be free to face someone else if he wishes. Maybe Maidana figures AB gave him a shot, so why not? Maybe Maidana thinks Broner won’t have learned much in just a few months. Marcos beat Broner up last time fair and square anyway, so less squealing on here please from Broner apologists if MM wins again, the next time.

Maidana beat Broner hands down. There shouldn’t be an immediate rematch. However, if Maidana did it once he should be able to do it twice. But why?

Posted January 11, 2014 11:28 am

Boxing is a major bussiness and money is the lifeline.Yes the title is something a boxer holds special to look back upon in their old age,but money is the driving force overall.M.M. dosent want the rematch right away because he felt he might have gotten the Mayweather other words more money.Against Khan GBP knew there was a good chance he could lose the rematch that would have really hurt his career at the time loseing twice like that.In other words GBP takes a lost on M.M. but in this case the chance of M.M. loseing to Broner in a rematch is slim..and the payday would be good. But M.M. wants the bigger payday against Mayweather, but GBP knows M.M. has no chance at winning against Mayweather. So GBP wants to strike while the iron is hot..a good payday with Broner and a win aswell. Then a cash out with Mayweather…but M.M. is blinded by the $ signs with the Mayweather fight. When Khan gets the call for Mayweather Im sure M.M. will gladly take the Broner fight because it will be his biggest payday since Mayweather will be out of the picture.

“DGVXXV, Maidana is a rich man right this minute & Golden Boy has a lot to do with it. If a rematch with Broner is made, like GBP WANTS, He’ll become even richer…hard to see WTF he ain’ happy about.”

Come on Largo. Maybe to you life is all about money, but boxers put their lives on the line to make a living. The titles, belts, championships, prestige, celebrity, and money are all very important to them. But you can bet that for most of them, their titles mean more than anything else. Because even when their money is gone, they will always have their belts. A boxer’s belt is never taken away from him. Only his title.

Posted January 11, 2014 9:29 am

“Hidalgo, that sounds more like fantasy BS”

That may be Largo, but my point is that’s what was said. I already said in another post that the fighters don’t determine who they fight next, their promoters do. But the fighters should have a say. And even if they do, it’s only on paper. More likely than not their promoters and other forces will pressure them to fight the opponent they want them to fight.

if Maidana is legally contracted to a rematch then there has to be a rematch..personally i thnk there was never a rematch clause, else it would be a done deal,Broner was convinced he would win,and no disrespect to Maidana Broner was the bigger yeah its all about the big money the promoters can make out of a rematch..if there is and Broner wins, there should be a rubber match, by the end of the year..

Even so, Maidana should have a say in who he faces next.” Hidalgo, that sounds more like fantasy BS; a fighter can wish to fight this guy or other but that ain’ that easy in real life…Maidana in fact, wants to fight Floyd, so what? if Floyd decides Maidana is not in his plans, how Maidana having a say on who he faces or GBP allowing his fighters to make a decision, would make a better or more realistic outcome? GBP has made Maidana a rich man & if Maidana can’t get Floyd, Broner will make him the more money & that’s all GBP is after. GBP is thinking green($$$) & making Maidana even richer & I don’t see what’s wrong with that. Btw, only a few fighters can choose who they’ll face next & Maidana is NOT one of them.

Even so, Maidana should have a say in who he faces next. The guy just put on the performance of his life but because one of GBP’s golden boys got his butt kicked they want to force Maidana to rematch him. This is total BS.

And there’s more to boxing than just money. Maidana is a very proud, hardworking fighter. He deserves his championship and he deserves to savor it for a while. He also deserves to have a say in his destiny with GBP.

Broner will over-train, come into the fight tight, dry, tired and get KO’d by MM by round 10. What is with Broner? Why can’t he set himself a plan to rebuild and challenge MM in 2015 or 16? I’ve watched that fight 4 times — Adrien does not take his power with him to 147 at this age – there are tons of lesser opposition to take on and develop all the facets it takes just to compete at the top tier at 147. This was not a close fight and Broner’s handlers should not allow him to risk everything without being properly prepared.

I don’t think Maidana should be forced to give Broner a rematch, but at the same time I think that a Broner rematch is the best fight for Maidana financially.
