But if they give one to don sulfer and brimstone king, I hope they drop it to the bottom of the marianas trench, and tell him to swim down and get it.

Promotor of the year? Hhmmmm…. That doesnt sound right. Isnt he part of one of the sides who REFUSES to come together with the other most powerful promotor, to help the sport produce the fights that will elevate boxing again? He is getting an award for that? Might as well give arum one too.

Schaefer is a MAFIA puppet. They used him as the face of GBP, but the Mafia runs VEGAS. Who do you think got Oscar fining on Coke, and Mayweather fining on Gambling. The Mafia runs the real show from the side line.

did he supplie the mayweather clan with their crack.

This award proves again that it is possible to be a successful promoter and still be a real slimebag, but of course those of us who have lived through the Don King era already knew that. I’ll give Schaefer credit and say that he has put on some exciting cards this year, but his statements are often untruthful and highly manipulative. There are several examples but my three favourites from this year are as follows. First, he said that Canelo was going to take over from Mayweather but in the end the only threat that that fight provided came in the form of C.J Ross, and Canelo was exposed for what he was, a decent fighter but nowhere in the league of Mayweather. Secondly, he helped Deontay Wilder land a No.3 ranking on the WBC list, and is quite content to sell Wilder as a legitimate contender, even though he has yet to fight anyone in the top forty. And last but not least, he told Gennady Golovkin that he hadn’t earned the right to fight Peter Quillin yet, and now that we’ve seen Peter struggle against Rosado, Schaefer has stated that he simply will not sit down with Golovkin, and that he and his team are too disrespectful to work with. It must be because Golovkin is known for being such a trash talking loudmouth, Ha! Yeah, right.

I beleive when Arum dies, his second in command will do a complete 180 and work with other promotors. Many have said Todd Duboef is a great promotor and businessman. Arum is full of grudges and he is a mean kill the competition type of businessman. He is 82 now, a multimillionaire but still the type of guy that would not pick up the check for dinner at a media event. How much longer is he gonna live and run Top Rank?

Schaffer is smart. He’s built GBP into a powerhouse.

Truth Teller

Richard Schaefer is a douche. He did a great job building GBP into the dominant promotional company in boxing but he’s hurting the sport with this in-house matchmaking.

One eye, you’re right. He speaks garbage. And the guy has crook written all over the place. I like a promoter by the name of Don Chargin. He promoted along the West Coast in the early 60’s to the early 80’s. I met him a few times through a few friends of mine (Loreto Garza, Willie Jorrin). This is a fair man. He was a match maker and promoter for the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles and promoted a long time. I believe he now acts as a sort of adviser for Oscar. Good man.

“Fighters don’t want to sign with Don King because he puts the heat on fighters to fight the best.” – Maybe in the 90s that was true. Now they don’t sign with him because he rarely promotes anymore, has few TV dates, and his fighters are put on the shelf. Several have sued to exit contracts due to him not meeting the minimum requirement on number of fights per year.

No, showtime should be the POTY

Fighters don’t want to sign with Don King because he puts the heat on fighters to fight the best. There is not no way this Mayweather and Pacquiao joke would have been going if either one was promoted by Don King. But Don King get bad mouth so much and bad by people don’t know the business it is difficult to maintain a open market in boxing and give the fight fans the fights for their money, now all the fighters are signing with Golden Boy. He must be paying those fighters very well. I don’t think so. LARRY Holmes once said, “with Don King robbing you, you are still making more then the other promoters are paying you”

Not it’s Schaeffer not Oscar. SI knows who runs the show and who is a figure head strung out on banging too many hoes on coke and liquor.

Richard Schaefer fits the look of all those promoters before him. Speaks well, dresses nice, smiles and wants to work with everyone to make a fair deal for all involved. The sport of boxing will never change neither will the familiar faces. Sports Illustrated must have some very credible, knowledgeable people making these decisions. And i’m sure as he says, “this is obviously and unexpected award. ” I’m sure it was Mr. Schaefer. Congratulations!

i said used to. as in the past.

Posted December 26, 2013 4:49 pm

Golden boy is winning right now they have all the big players like monopoly. Floyd, Garcia malligani, broner maidana. The list goes one too bad Top rank can never agree to anyting or you would have seen Manny and Bradley fighting the guys I mentioned. Golden boy runs boxing right now…

Posted December 26, 2013 4:48 pm

Don King isn’t running anything anymore. Heck he only has a handful of fighters and seems to be going out of business. I am old enough

Posted December 26, 2013 4:48 pm

what about phylis de la hoya.

Posted December 26, 2013 4:43 pm

you might be too young but don king used to stack cards

Posted December 26, 2013 4:42 pm

Definitely deserves it. The cards he has promoted have been pretty darn good. No other promoter has put on the type of cards he has done.
