The thing is, they matched Ortiz vs Josesito “knowing” Ortiz would win. They wanted Canelo-Ortiz.. Didn’t happen.. They got Josesito.. Good deal for him. To the victor go the spoils — which was a Canelo shot.
Anybody can fight bums for no money. Not everyone can fight Canelo for good money.Posted October 9, 2013 11:59 pm
Josesito had no problem with it… He pulled down his biggest payday ever.. He also got a fight with Marcos Maidana.. I hope he salted some of that away from those 2 fights.. He’s not going to get that many fat paychecks the way he’s going.
But I did appreciate the way he broke Victor Ortiz’s jaw… Beautiful shot.Posted October 9, 2013 8:30 pm
As I already said in another ESB article, personally, I rather Cotto face Canelo, but… let’s analyze this one objectively: Prior to the Chavez Jr fight Martinez faced TWO rather unknown but worthy challengers, Matthew Macklin & Darren Barker. In both contest Sergio didn’t look too dominant, I’m sure we’ll all agree, especially vs Macklin who dropped him in the process. They were supposed to be rather EASY wins for Sergio, they surely weren’t. Then FINALLY came Chavez Jr, who’s team probably thought Martinez was finished and ready to be taken. Martinez handled Junior EASIER than he did both Macklin and Barker, with the exception of that final round, Juniors ONLY moment, the ONLY round where he looked like a worthy challenger, compared to the relatively unknown Brits. For his next defense Sergio once again picks ANOTHER lesser known Brit, Martin Murray. We ALL know what we saw, Martinez going down TWICE (once officially) en route to winning an UNCONVINCING decision. All THREE Brits proved to be superior competition than Chavez Jr, no doubt, although some Junior fans would find excuses to refute the obvious and still tout him as a “cream of the crop” fighter. Other (too critical) fans might consider him “the cream of the crap” instead. Back to Sergio, is he on his way down?? Were the Brits THAT GOOD?? Or.. is it that he looked so dominant in only ONE of his last FOUR fights because Chavez Jr actually THAT BAD?? hmmm… Think about it. Either way, I’d rather Cotto face Canelo. Don’t measure this one using the ‘Trout fights’ comparison. Cotto is a smarter fighter than Trout, and more versatile. If you believe Cotto is afraid of Canelo then it’s even EASIER to say that for a LONG time BOTH Chavez is & Canelo were afraid their most dangerous contenders and those of equal size. Right? Oh well, peace to all!!Posted October 8, 2013 5:10 pm
FA – Same would happen to Canelo.. LOLPosted October 8, 2013 3:06 pm
Top Rank apparently wants to cash out on Cotto early. He’d get outboxed by Martinez and massacred by GGG.Posted October 8, 2013 2:04 pm
Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)
3G would beat FMJ, Cotto, Canelo, Martinez, Lara and any other MW in the world. That why FMJ will NEVER in a million years agree to fight 3G at 154lbs.
Cotto has a chance at 154 vs Martinez. Can’t c him beating him at 160Posted October 7, 2013 10:55 pm
23 year old young Canelo future should be at the 147 div. with the help of his nutritionist of course, he doesn’t have what it takes to handle all that weight he runs out gas to quick/stamina problems… lets hope Oscar rehabilitate/clears his Cocaine addicted mind and MILK his CASH COW Canelo at the 147 div. with big names like Bradley, Marquez, Pacquiao, Broner,Garcia, Khan, Alexander, Rios, Madiana, Mattheyesee and Thurman.Posted October 7, 2013 10:25 pm
Floyd EASILY beat a solid 172 pounds undefeated Canelo so he shouldn’t have problems fighting Trout, Lara, Molina and GGG for Floyd 154 WBC belt.Posted October 7, 2013 10:18 pm
Come on now. Give cinnabun a lil love p.e.! LolPosted October 7, 2013 9:00 pm
What was canelo’s fight night weight against floyd? I still feel canelo can beat anyone at 154 not name floyd!Posted October 7, 2013 8:15 pm
E in Denver
P.E.- Put down the Hater-aide for a little while. Canelo vs. Cotto is a great match up. Cotto vs. Jr is still interesting but doesn’t seem half as competitive as a Canelo fight. Even a Trout rematch for either guy is still an interesting fight. Cotto looked great but he was in against a Friday Night Fights guy. Cotto should stay away from 160.Posted October 7, 2013 7:07 pm
@ tark – cotto better not fight triple g! It would be a homocide! But! cotto can bet MartínezPosted October 7, 2013 6:03 pm
Big mistake!!Posted October 7, 2013 5:49 pm
GGG is the top 160 pounder followed closely by Quillin. As great a fighting legend that Cotto is, both thee guys destroy him. As far as Martinez goes, he’s done. Martinez looked old, slow and should have lost his last fight. He’s taken way too much time off. He’s not young. IMO, he’s done. Cotto may even beat him if they fight, which financially makes sense. Both big names with Argentina and Puerto Rico mixing up.Posted October 7, 2013 5:05 pm
A fight with Martinez would have been good 2 years back but Sergio is no longer “maravilla” he’s still super good! But health wise I agree with murderman he’s shot!, Canelo makes perfect sense! WOW would that fight be awesome!Posted October 7, 2013 5:00 pm
maravilla wil knoc out any fighter at 154 or 160 even tje clown of floyd its scared of him.Posted October 7, 2013 4:13 pm
@Titopa.., No he doesn’t deserve a fight with a guy who was wiped out by Floyd and Trout. He needs to fight Golovkin, the most deserving opponent.
@murderman.., Then will Cotto fight Golovkin??? That’s the question.Posted October 7, 2013 3:47 pm
TARK – I’m a huge fan of GGG, but at this point of their careers (Cotto & Martinez), fighting each other is BETTER business, Cotto’s done a LOT in the sport and his resume is STELLAR, Martinez too has fought a lot of tough guys and since he’s slowed down (a lot), NOT fighting GGG is acceptable…GGG will RULE 160 some day, but right now, the guy (Sergio) at the top deserves a fight with Cotto.Posted October 7, 2013 3:44 pm
Cotto can k.o. martinez. Sergio is shot!Posted October 7, 2013 3:35 pm
Obviously Cotto is an attractive opponent for Martinez… That way Sergio gets to avoid Grennady Golovkin for a lot longer.Posted October 7, 2013 3:16 pm
I think my man should stay put right where he’s at!Posted October 7, 2013 2:39 pm
murderman – As Roy Jones said he’s not saying Cotto would beat Floyd but that it would make for a very interesting match up when you add the variables. Cotto’s healthy and has an actual true Trainer with the correct Game plan… It’s about the $$$ and Floyd and Cotto are on good terms so why not make it happen?Posted October 7, 2013 1:59 pm
@ pe – molina, trout rematch, lara and that bout it unless he goes up to 160. Cotto vs canelo? I dont like that matchup for cotto. Cotto vs lara maybe. Idk about a floyd rematch. W floyd sr may is untouchable. Dont like floyd matchup for cotto. So im not sure whats next for cotto. Canelo should be at 160. He cant continue to make weight at 154Posted October 7, 2013 1:24 pm
Murderman – Canelo would have to fight Cotto at the same weight he fougth Mayweather otherwise Cotto doesn’t need Canelo.. Cotto has some nice fights to be made at 154lbs.. Who will Canelo fight??Posted October 7, 2013 1:17 pm
Murderman – agree Cotto has no business at 160lbs.. none.. He has alot of good fights at 154 to make a seriously nice amount of $$$…Posted October 7, 2013 1:16 pm
@ pe – my friend cotto just isnt the monster at 154 as he was at 147. At 160 he just doesnt have the size n power to compete w the bigger guys. He gave may a good fight but may almost k.o. him in the 12th. Triple g will be to much for cotto so will canelo. Unless he can fight these guys at 147 he has no shot. Too short, too small, no reach, not enough power. Cotto should be fighting at 147 where he is a monster!Posted October 7, 2013 1:09 pm
Yeah 153lb Cotto vs 190+lbs Chavez Cheato Jr. that would be a great fight.. what else can you expect from these dumbfks..Posted October 7, 2013 11:39 am
I feel Cotto is already over his head at 154…..he should go to 147Posted October 7, 2013 9:29 am
Jonn E. JaGozza
Cotto vs Canelo would be great or Cotto vs Chavez would be great too.
Cotto is already too short, too small, short reach, and no power to hurt any real contender at 154. No way he can be competetive at 160. Cotto vs ggg? Murder! Ggg murks cotto! Cotto maybe could beat martinez at 154. Martinez is washed up and looking to cash outPosted October 7, 2013 2:27 am
Golovkin would knock Cotto out easily at 160 or at 154, so would Martinez……….Posted October 7, 2013 1:29 am
Cotto should go and get Molina’s title. Molina would have a tough time trying to push Cotto back and he may end up kO’d from the body shots. Then That would set up the rematch with Trout, or Mayweather and a possible fight with Alverez. Mayweather could fight the winner of the Alexander vs Khan fight in May and Cotto in September.Posted October 7, 2013 1:28 am
And Golovkin would destroy Cotto. It would be a massacre.Posted October 7, 2013 12:40 am
No….2 short at 154….the likes of Marravilla and Kid chocolate would tag him all night.Posted October 6, 2013 11:29 pm
