Big night for British Boxing – Haye vs. Chisora & Khan vs. Garcia

By Glenn Felton: The 14th July is a big night for the sport of boxing in the UK. We have David Haye squaring up against Dereck ‘Del Boy’ Chisora and Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia. They are both big fights in themselves but could well lead on to bigger things, with the possibility of the Haye Chisora winner squaring off with a Klitschko, and if Amir Khan is to win his light welterweight battle with Garcia, he could well push himself to the front of the queue for a money spinning date against Floyd Mayweather, with current rumours suggesting that ‘Money’ would be prepared to travel to the UK to take on Khan.

David Haye is the odds on favourite for the up and coming heavyweight dust up, and the fight has all the makings of a domestic classic. There is no doubt that Haye is in fantastic shape for the fight but I do wonder sometimes about his over confidence. Del boy has an awful lot riding on the fight as a 4th straight defeat would be a big blow. I do see Haye getting the win but it may be slightly more difficult than he is predicting. Both guys seem extremely focused and whoever loses will have a bitter pill to swallow, given how much trash talk has gone on in the build up to the clash.

I feel if Haye is to get the KO he has been loudly predicting, then it will come early, and although I don’t subscribe to the views that he struggles with stamina issues as in previous fights (Thompson was a long time ago), I do think his punching power will not be as overwhelming from say round four, and this combined with the fact that Del boy has shown on a few occasions against top class opposition, he can go the full distance. Therefore, I feel if the fight was to go past the fourth round I could see a tough point’s decision for Haye. For me it is also in Haye’s favour that the contest is only scheduled for 10 rounds, as Del boy has shown in previous contests he comes on strong in the later rounds.

Amir Khan’s fight with Danny Garcia is make or break for the man from Bolton. Another defeat would potentially be a crushing blow for Amir, however I don’t think Garcia will have the tools to cause him too many problems.

I think, as most people do, that Khan will have too much speed for Garcia, if he sticks to quick in and out boxing I don’t think Danny will be able to live with him. The plan for Garcia will surely be to walk him down with pressure fighting and if he is successful with this and get Khan to stand there and trade with him, this would increase his chances dramatically, as we have seen, when Khan gets dragged it to this type of fight he does tend to look vulnerable.

All in all I think we will have two very entertaining fights, and as I said before will ultimately lead on to bigger challenges for the winners.
