David Price – Sam Sexton on 5/19; Forbes-Augustus on 4/12

Boxing promoter Frank Maloney reckons he knows who can boost Liverpool’s season – heavyweight champ David Price !

Back-to-back losses to Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers mean Liverpool have taken just eight points from 11 Premier League games this year and Maloney reckons he has the solution.

Price is the current English heavyweight champion and on Saturday, May 19 he battles Sam Sexton for the vacant British title at Aintree Racecourse.

Maloney reckons Price will become Liverpool’s first-ever British heavyweight champion and also thinks the 28 year-old could help his favourite football team.

“We can loan David to the football club,” said Maloney. “I’m sure he could motivate the players.

“They should see just how hard he trains and how much the city of Liverpool – and its football team – means to him.”

Price was a promising footballer himself.

He was a strapping centre half and as a teenager, had trials for Liverpool Schools before deciding to make boxing his No 1 sport.

It looks like he made the right choice !

Price won three ABA super-heavyweight titles, struck gold at the Commonwealth Games and grabbed bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and as a professional, he’s unbeaten in 12 fights with 10 knock outs.

Steve Forbes vs. Emanuel Augustus on April 12th

In 25 years of pro boxing shows at the Irvine Marriott’s Battle In The Ballroom series, 38 current or former world champions fought there…Shane Mosley, Johnny Tapia, Isreal Vasquez, Edwin Velaro, Mike Anchondo, Gabriel Ruelas, to name a few. Now with the move to The Hangar and Fight Club OC, a new list of champions will begin, and that first honor goes to Steve Forbes. After battling the best in the world everywhere from 130 pounds, where he won his world title in 2000, all the way up to 150 pounds, where he faced Oscar De La Hoya in 2008, former world champion Steve “2Pound” Forbes will make his return to the ring in his optimum weight class – junior welterweight – in a Fight Club OC headlining bout against veteran Emanuel Augustus on Thursday, April 12th.

“Anyone who knows Steve is aware that he’s at his best at 140 pounds, and he’s going to show that on April 12th,” said Forbes’ new advisor, John White. “Emanuel Augustus is a tough test, but Steve knows that it’s now or never if he wants to move forward in his career.”

Besides the Forbes vs. Augustus bout, the evening will also feature undefeated heavyweight prospect Alexander “The Great” Flores who at 7-0-5KO’s will meet 3-3 tough guy Giovanni Sarran, and heavyweight prospect, 16-1-10KO’s Skylar Anderson will be back in the ring after a two year layoff, facing a tough 6-7-1KO Andre Carthron. Others seeing action on a packed undercard include Newport Beach middleweight Steffan Lugo, Azusa’s Danny Martinez; and in a bout that could be the main event on anyone else’s card, 10-1 Ramon Valadez vs. 6-0 Kevin Hoskins.
