By James Slater – Last seen crumbling to the canvas whilst clutching his leg in pain, Cuban heavyweight hope Odlanier Solis seemed to quite literally vanish after his huge disappointment of a fight with WBC heavyweight king Vitali Klitschko.
“La Sombre” was reported to be set for a return in Germany a few weeks back, yet later said he himself had heard nothing about the talked of return. Solis, promoted by Ahmet Oener, is still only 31-years-old, young for a heavyweight, but he must get things moving again if he’s to avoid becoming a forgotten fighter..
A while back, on invaluable web site fight news, Oener gave a video interview in which he spoke about his upcoming November 26th card set for Trabzon in Turkey. Oener spoke about the headliner – a return between welterweights Selcuk Aydin and Ionut Dan Ion, who met in a June 2010 bout that was scored, somewhat controversially for Aydin – but he also mentioned that Solis will make his return on the card.
Boxrec has Solis, 17-1(12) down as facing a TBA on Nov. 26th, so maybe this time the former Olympian will indeed see action. It will be interesting to see who Solis is matched with in what will be his first fight back since that painful March night. It will also be interesting to see how Solis’ knee, on which he has reportedly had successful surgery on, holds up in this and future fights. And as talented as he is, Solis HAS a future. As long as he trains hard (some fans may raise eyebrows at this!) and if he keeps himself active and if his knee does not serve to hinder him any further, Solis could yet make things interesting at the top of the heavyweight division.
Oener certainly believes in his man still. Encouraged by the success Solis was having in the almost three minutes he had against Vitali, the promoter remains convinced that, had his knee not blown, Solis would have won the fight. Now shooting for either a return with Vitali or a crack at Wladimir for his fighter, Oener speaks well of his heavyweight.
Now is the time for a well-conditioned (I.E: under 245-pounds) Solis to show his hunger, his desire and his seriousness. He may have a long, long wait as far as getting either Klitschko into the ring, but fights between Solis and guys like Alexander Povetkin, Tyson Fury, Robert Helenius or even Tomasz Adamek sure would be intriguing. Let’s see how Solis looks in his first comeback fight (if it takes place as planned).
