LOS ANGELES, November 8 – A date that people around the world will remember is this coming Friday, 11/11/11, as a date that represents a unique numerical occurrence, but for fight fans, it’s the day of the Canelo Takeover on TeleFutura’s “Sólo Boxeo Tecate Classics.” The special edition will featuring the re-broadcast of two memorable fights of unbeaten WBC Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez which should get fans amped up for his upcoming November 26 against Kermit “The Killer” Cintron which will be televised on HBO’s Boxig After Dark from Mexico City.
The special presentation of “Sólo Boxeo Tecate” is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate and AT&T and will air on TeleFutura at 12:30am ET/PT (11:30pm CT).
In the “Classics” main event which took place on May 1, 2010 in Las Vegas, Mexico’s Alvarez was introduced to fans in the fight capital of the world for a serious test against longtime contender Jose Miguel Cotto. Cotto pushed the younger Alvarez further than he had been to that point in his career, but Alvarez showed his talent and poise in stopping the veteran in the ninth round. A star was born that night and American fight fans were eager to see him fight in the United States again.
In his next fight stateside, he faced granite-chinned former World Champion Carlos “Tata” Baldomir and knocked him out in just six rounds on September 18, 2010 in Los Angeles. The victory, which will be the “Classic” co-feature, marked a step in Alvarez’s career and helped to further establish him as a star in the United States.
ETCHES AND JENKINS – THE BOX OFFICE SMASHERS
SHEFFIELD pair Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins have done their bit for charity by selling out the dinner show they box on later this month.
The Hatton Promotions pair box selected opponents when they fight at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Sheffield Park on Thursday 24th November.
Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity will benefit from the fund raising show, which sold out inside 24 hours when tickets went on sale last week.
Exciting light-middleweight Etches will be out to show the improvement he is making since recently joining the world famous Ingle gym.
Etches, 20, who has won all five professional fights said: “I am loving it at the Ingles. I am there every morning and afternoon training, learning and listening.
“I try to pick up something new every day there and I want to be able to prove that I can box and that I’m not just a puncher.
“I enjoy fighting on these dinner shows and it certainly takes the pressure off when the tickets sell so quickly.”
Lightweight Jenkins, 20, will be bidding for his third win since turning professional in the summer when he boxes on the dinner show, and Sheffield Wednesday fans can’t forget him.
His sponsors Sheffield Kitchen Outlet have paid for an 18 foot banner of the young hopeful which stands outside Hillsborough.
He explained: “It looks really good and has my Twitter account and website on the banner and it is attracting attention.
“It must have helped shift tickets for the next fight because there wasn’t enough to go around.
“I just want to get out there and perform because I feel I am getting better all the time. I have travelled around sparring and it has been beneficial to me.”
ALGIERI-JARGAL READY FOR WAR NOV. 19 ON AZTECA AMERICA
Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing presents the third installment of their new series “Boxeo Azteca” televised live on the Azteca America network as undefeated Jr. Welterweight Chris Algieri (11-0 6KO Huntington, NY) takes a big step up in class when he takes on hard hitting Bayan Jargal (15-2-3 10KO Arlington, VA) in the 10 round main Jr. Welterweight main event November 19th, at The Paramount in Huntington, Long Island, NY.
Algieri, whose mother is from Argentina, will be fighting in his hometown of Huntington for only the second time in his career and first time as a main event fighter. In his last fight Algieri disposed of tough Philly fighter Julius Edmonds in 4 rounds on March 17th of this year. Chris has battled numerous hand injuries which has slowed his progress down but now feels his hands are one hundred percent and is raring to climb up the Jr. Welterweight ladder. He faces a tough task on November 19th when he steps into the ring with Jargal.
Jargal, who represented his native Mongolia in the 2003 and 2005 World Championships as an amateur, has been called the Mongolian version of Manny Pacquiao for his relentless style. In his last fight Jargal took on world rated Breidis Prescott, a bout televised as part of ESPN2 “Friday Night Fight” series on April 22nd of this year. Jargal put forth a game effort as he hung with Prescott for the full 10 rounds, having strong moments in the latter part of the fight. Jargal is a hard puncher and is known for his fan friendly style. Bayan has promised to ruin Algieri’s homecoming party.
Five additional bouts are planned for the card. The card will be aired on Azteca America with the telecast set to begin at 10pm EST.
