By Joseph Herron: On September 13th, Floyd Mayweather Sr. gave his thoughts on who he felt had the advantage going into the big fight tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, and who he predicted to win the highly publicized contest.
When Floyd Sr. spoke to the media earlier this week, he seemed genuinely concerned about the effects of his verbal exchange with his son on HBO’s 24/7.
“When you really look at the overall picture, it’s really bad for Floyd seeing that he did what he did to his father…and now he’s getting ready to fight. Those things right there sometimes carry a lot of weight.”
“But at the end of the day, he has my blood running through his veins and he is my son. I want nothing but the best for him and I really hope that he wins.”
“When the fight was first announced, a lot of things came into my head; Victor’s power, his age, and Floyd’s recent inactivity.”
“I’m not that worried about the fight with Ortiz now. After I sat back and watched his fight with Berto, I saw different things. He’s vulnerable for the straight right hand and left hook. I was telling him in the gym the other day before the big argument how a southpaw is vulnerable for the straight right hand and left hook.”
“You can hit him with that all day long. If you hit him with the straight right hand to the body, he cannot get away from it and there’s nothing that he can do.”
“Even though Floyd is ten years his senior, Floyd is still the boss in there. Little Floyd has more knowledge than Victor Ortiz, and Victor has been on floor I don’t know how many times. It wasn’t just Berto that put him down, he’s been hurt by numerous people.”
When asked if he was impressed by Victor’s performance against Andre Berto earlier this year, Floyd Sr. was very adamant about his thoughts on the WBC welterweight championship winning performance.
“I’m not impressed with what Victor did to Berto. Berto is good enough to win a title, but he’s just a ranked fighter. He doesn’t have what my son has. Berto isn’t a hell of a fighter. He’s not that impressive.”
“Seeing how Victor struggled with Berto, he really isn’t in the same class as my son. Even if everyone thought that Ortiz whooped Berto in their last fight, he’s not going to whoop Floyd like that.”
“I really think that Floyd has the mindset that he is more skilled and craftier than Victor, and he knows that he is the head honcho of the game.”
“I just don’t think that anyone who is as hittable as Victor Ortiz can beat Floyd. I mean, you can just close your eyes and still be able to hit Victor. Don’t get me wrong, I like Victor. But, Floyd is faster and more knowledgeable.”
“That’s what is going to win the fight for Floyd. His superior knowledge and speed is going to be too much for Victor Ortiz.”
While Floyd Sr. acknowledges the obvious dangers in fighting a young, strong fighter like Victor Ortiz, he is supremely confident that Floyd Jr. will convincingly defeat his opponent tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV.
