British News: Frankie Gavin Splits With Trainer Anthony Farnell, Danny Williams Wins Decision Against Al Cole

By James Slater: Two British fighters heading in different directions had eventful weekends. Unbeaten pro and former world amateur champion Frankie Gavin didn’t have a fight, but news broke revealing a most important development in the career of the 11-0(8) welterweight hope’s career. Gavin, known as “Fun Time,” announced via his Facebook page that he has split with trainer and former pro Anthony Farnell.

Basically, as has been announced on Boxrec, Gavin says he owes Farnell a lot, but that he was becoming unhappy working in Manchester. The 25-year-old said he is going to move to London and that he has “got something sorted” for his next fight, planned for some time in October (very possibly on the Nathan Cleverly-Tony Bellew show set for Liverpool).

As his fans know, Gavin has failed to look impressive in recent outings, struggling to win close decisions over fighters many expected him to defeat in commanding fashion. Some rumours have surfaced, suggesting Gavin is not as dedicated to the training and discipline side of the sport as he should be. No doubt the rumours will grow now that this break-up has taken place.

As to who will replace Farnell as southpaw Gavin’s trainer, we can only speculate. We’ll no doubt find out on or before the month of October.

Meanwhile over the weekend, former British heavyweight champ Danny Williams, now aged 38, won a six-round split decision over 47-year-old former IBF cruiserweight champ Al “Ice” Cole. The fight took place in Sweden, and was fought over six, two-minute rounds. Williams prevailed by scores of 59-56 and 58-56 on two cards, while “Ice” was given the nod at 58-56 on the card of the third judge.

“The Brixton Bomber” is now 44-10(33). Cole is now 35-16-3(16).

Williams, who announced his retirement following his May 2010 2nd-round stoppage loss to Dereck Chisora, changed his mind and took his show on the road (unable to get a British licence). He has since gone 3-1, with the loss coming via controversial stoppage to Manuel Charr. Danny seems intent on carrying on fighting and finally ending his once top-class career only when he sees fit.
