Omar Chavez, Jorge Paez Junior Both Win By KO; Set Up Potential Meeting

By James Slater: Last night in Baja California, Mexico, two “Sons Of Legends” scored relatively easy KO victories against selected opposition. Omar Chavez, son of course of the great Julio Cesar Chavez, halted Alberto Martinez with a wicked left hook to the jaw that landed in the very first-round. The official time was 2-mins and 51 seconds. Chavez is now 27-0-1(20). Martinez is now 15-2(10).

Then, in the co-feature, Jorge Paez Junior got the job done in the 3rd-round against Rodrigo Juarez. Paez decked Juarez in the 1st-round and finished him off in the 3rd. The official time was 1-min and 10 seconds of the 3rd. Paez Jr is now 29-4-1(18). Juarez is now 15-14-1(11).

The big news now though, is that the two “boxing juniors” are on course to meet each other. In what could well prove to be an interesting and exciting fight, the two young welterweights are waiting to see if the financial details of a match-up make sense.

Chavez, the younger man by a couple of years at age 21, has the unbeaten record, while Paez has had more pro fights and has picked more experience. Both guys like to fight, have exciting styles, and the name value would likely entice a pretty big audience should the fight happen.

Paez has been stopped once during his pro career, by Ramon Guevara back in 2007, while “El Maromerito” also has a points win over a badly faded Jose Luis Castillo. Chavez, known as “The Business Man,” has just one blip on his pro ledger: a 2008 majority draw with Miguel Hernandez (later avenged via a UD victory). Young Chavez will likely start favourite if the two meet later this year.

“I think it would be interesting to face Paez and people would like it,” Omar Chavez said pre-fight.

The legendary fathers of both fighters were on hand to watch the action last night.
