By James Slater: Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer held a press conference in London earlier today, primarily to announce plans for the immediate future of WBA/IBF 140-Pound king Amir Khan. Schaefer also announced to the gathered media how the upcoming Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz clash will be shown live and exclusively in the U.K by PRIMETIME. This of course, is bad news for fight fans in the U.K who have SKY.
Mayweather-Ortiz will be available via Pay-Per-View, whereas in the past, Mayweather fights, such as his mega-fights with the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and “Sugar” Shane Mosley, have gone out on regular SKY Sports.
Schaefer made it clear once again how Khan is targeting a 2012 fight with Mayweather – or, if Ortiz causes the upset next month, then a fight with the current WBC welterweight champ.
“The card on September 17th has tremendous implications for fight fans in the U.K,” Schaefer said. “Two of Amir’s next three opponents are fighting on this card. I’m talking about either Mayweather or Ortiz, and also [Erik] Morales or Lucas Matthysse. The idea is for Amir to be fighting again in December in the United States against either the winner of Morales-Matthysse or the winner out of [Marcos] Maidana and Robert Guerrero.
“After taking on those guys , Khan will then look at moving up to the welterweight division and fight a well known opponent, maybe a former world champion, as his welterweight debut here in the U.K. We are looking at the possibility of having Khan Vs. Mayweather next December, which will be one of the biggest fights in recent history in the U.K.”
Needles to say, Khan has some massive future ahead of him if Schaefer’s plans come to fruition. The planned December date at the end of this year is exciting enough – Vs. either Mattyhsse, Morales, Guerrero or Maidana II – and a massive fight with “Money” up at 147 would make British boxing history, I’m sure.
Still, despite all this good and exciting news involving a British fighter, I’m a little down due to Mayweather-Ortiz not being set for SKY Sports! Looks like we in the U.K will have to shell out at least £14.95 for the card being called “Star Power.”
