Approximately 500 boxing fans viewed the Youtube video proclaiming “Everyone Wants to Fight Christy Martin.” During the one minute, twenty second piece, Christy verbally disparages boxing favorites and pound for pound champions, dismissing them as quality, worthy opponents. The most vocal fighter to challenge Martin is Chevelle Hallback, who is very obviously ignored in this clip. Close supporters of Martin believe a fight with Chevelle will never happen, claiming her size and fighting weight too small for Martin. Chevelle is a 135-147 pound fighter, with Martin’s up an coming fight against Dakota Stone in the 150+ class. A look back at Martin’s career proves her weight ranged between super middlweight against Laila Ali, 142 ½ with Holly Holm, and 140 ¼ in a ten round loss to Angelica Martinez.
Mia St. John, one of the fighters scorned by Martin in her video is quoted in a recent Huffington Post article by Robert David Jaffee as training for a possible rematch with Martin, claiming the loss to her years ago was controversial, and she wishes to avenge the loss and earn her rightful victory. Jaffee also noted Mia would likely have to step up from her natural weight class, which is light weight, to do so.
Comparing Mia St. John and Chevelle Hallback as fighters is easy. They’ve both fought in the same weight class, but that’s where the similarities cease. St. John gained weight to face Martin, and survived for ten rounds, managing to mix it up and engage in some toe to toe action, endure some tough body shots, and successfully dodge Martin’s heavy handed, brawling style. Hallback is more powerful than Mia, has speed, good defense and a slick style which makes her a very well rounded fighter- the very things Christy Martin struggles against in a fight.
If Christy Martin manages to win impressively over Dakota Stone in March and is given a bout on the Pacquiao/Mosley undercard in May, Chevelle Hallback is training, sparring and in shape now at 146 pounds, making a fight at 150 very realistic. Then all Christy Martin has to do is step up for a real fight. Chevelle is ready and waiting.
