By Prince Dornu-Leiku: Ghana’s Sugar Ray Narh AKA the Emperor hopes to once again press his case for a world title fight when he defends his WBC/USNBC Light welterweight title against former world champion American Freddie Norwood on March 4 in Florida, USA. Narh, 24-1 (21 KOs), will make a first defence of the belt he won with a 2nd round TKO over Angel Hernandez on April 3rd last year against the experienced Norwood who twice held the WBA Featherweight crown in 1998 and 1999 before losing it for good in 2000.
“Preparation has been great and my whole body is in a fighting zone now for war. I’m in great shape, simple put. My hands will be raised high with the Ghana flag waving after this fight. Hopefully after this the way will open clearly for the world title shot that I and my fans have been waiting for all these years. I still thank God for everything even though the road has been real rocky and bumpy,” Narh has told SportsInGhana.com from his US base.
32 year old Narh admits that time is now running out on his bid for a world title fight so much that not even the huge experience of the 40 year old Norwood, 43-3-1 (23 KOs) could dissuade him on the ambition for March 4: “Freddie Norwood is a world class fighter, a former WBA champion so I’m expecting a tough fight from him. His knowledge in this sport is incredible but we, that’s myself, my twin brother Raynolds in the UK and Kwame Asante my trainer have watched his tape and have come up with a best style to beat this talented guy,” an up and ready Ray Narh disclosed.
ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports will telecast the fight live in the US on their popular Friday Night Fights channel, SportsInGhana.com understands the Ray Narh’s team led by Mr. Yoofi Boham have been in advanced talks with leading local television stations Metro TV and TV3 to also beam the bout live to Ray Narh’s countrymen back in the homeland “so Ghanaians can watch me do my thing,” as the Emperor says himself.
