Eddie Chambers Says Let Him And Haye Fight Now, The Winner To Then Face Wladimir

By James Slater – Earlier this month, in what was his first fight back since being stopped in the final round by Ring Magazine, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight ruler Wladimir Klitschko, Philly’s “Fast” Eddie Chambers won an IBF elimination bout against Derric Rossy. On paper the points win moved Chambers a step towards a return with Klitschko, but Eddie was not happy with his performance. Perhaps he also feels the win (over a guy he had already beaten, by stoppage at that) didn’t really earn him a second shot at Wladimir..

Chambers has an intriguing idea about what would earn him a second go at “Dr. Steel Hammer,” though – a win over WBA titlist David Haye. In speaking with Fightnews recently, the 36-2(18) contender threw down the gauntlet to “The Hayemaker,” challenging him to fight him next, the winner to then go in with Wladimir.

A fight between the two men who have good skills, boxing ability and youth on their side would no doubt prove attractive to the fans, and Chambers Vs. Haye would also be a potentially exciting Boxer Vs. Puncher match-up.

“David Haye,” Chambers replied when asked who he’d like to fight. “I believe it would be a great way for the winner to then earn the right to fight Klitschko. Haye is the one I would love to get inside the ring now. Who knows how and when it will happen? These fighters are scared and don’t want to fight anybody. Haye has had his moment of fame but he hasn’t done the work.”

Not one for trash-talking, Chambers instead referred to Haye’s promise to fight the best yet fail to do so. And, say what want about Chambers; but he has proven he IS willing to fight the best. And now he should be commended for calling Haye out so as to have the chance to really earn a second fight with Wladimir, when it’s possible he could have waited around and got his rematch due to his position with the IBF. Chambers has to know that a loss to Haye would set him back a long, long way, and that he could forget all about another go at Klitschko. Yet still he calls the dangerous puncher out.

It is of course doubtful Haye will accept Chambers’ offer. Currently in talks with both Ruslan Chagaev and, in case Chagaev is refused a licence to fight in the UK, Alexander Povetkin, Haye has never spoken about Chambers. It looks like Haye is going a different route, and unless he bites at some of the negative things Chambers had to say about him, the WBA champ will defend against a European challenger next.

And this – the best fights not taking place – is what so annoys Chambers.

“I can only assume that he [Haye] doesn’t want a real fight,” Chambers said. “It’s an embarrassment to the fighter. I have to assume that since he said he will take on anyone and doesn’t do it, the truth comes out by calling out the “right guys” and staying away from someone like me? Haye wants money and fame but doesn’t want to fight.”

It’s highly probable a lot of fans will agree with Chambers ’ last comment. However, to be fair, if Haye fights the unbeaten Povetkin next (a man who has, as we know, beaten Chambers), he will be taking a “real” fight.

Still, Chambers has sold the idea of a “final eliminator” between he and Haye to me!
