by Geoffrey Ciani – The IBF light heavyweight eliminator bout between Otis Griffin (23-4-2, 9 KOs) and Yusaf Mack (28-3-2, 17 KOs) was postponed. The fight was originally scheduled for January 7 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The contest was postponed due to inclement weather. In fact, the snow was so bad in Minneapolis that three of the fabric panels on the roof of the Metrodome have collapsed!—so much for global warming. The fight will now take place February 4 at the Sheraton in Bloomington, Minnesota. The winner of the Griffin-Mack eliminator would be in a position to challenge IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (22-0, 18 KOs).
This was a fight that has been getting a lot of chatter on boxing message boards. It plays a decisive factor in the immediate future of the 175 pound landscape. It is also a match that has promise to be interesting. A lot of fans were looking forward to this fighting because it is one of the first meaningful fights of the New Year. Unfortunately, boxing enthusiasts will have to wait just a little longer.
Griffin has won four fights in a row since suffering a second round loss at the hands of Marcus Oliveira, including an impressive eighth round stoppage against Byron Mitchell. For Yusaf Mack this will be his first fight since February last year when he was stopped in six rounds by seasoned veteran Glen Johnson. Both fighters have everything to gain and a lot to lose, and should be on top of their game which should make for an interesting fight. It remains to be seen whether or not the delay in the action will have a greater impact on either fighter’s mental and physical preparations.
